Most colleges and universities offer service learning as a strategy for student success and
local community engagement, but what do they know about the impact of their programs?
This workshop will feature national research studies and hands-on work to help identify
appropriate assessment methods to benefit students, programs, and communities.
In this workshop, participants will:
• Learn about studies on service learning and civic engagement and implications for their use
• Explore the transformational effect of service learning on academic learning outcomes,
retention, workplace readiness, and community needs
• Try some proven assessment tools and resources
• Tailor your institution’s data (along with national data) to tell your story to stakeholders
• Understand how to use outcomes data to prepare for the Carnegie Community Engagement

Food for thought: Strategies for Successful Campus-Community Partnerships
Campus-community initiatives focused on community gardens, nutrition, and physical
activity continue to grow in popularity. Twenty-nine VISTA Summer Associates worked
with campuses and communities as part of a ten-week “healthy food for all” summer service
project to develop and enhance nutrition-related programming. The Summer Associate
panel presentation will highlight best practices and lessons learned from these innovative
partnerships.

SESSION A: Financing & funding community engagement Room 219
Lack of sufficient support and resources tops most Community Service Director lists of
challenges to their service-learning and community engagement efforts. During this session,
we’ll learn about two non-traditional financing strategies: Denison University’s endowment
and use of student government funds for the Denison Community Association and Miami
University’s new service-learning student fee structure.

SESSION B: Peer-to-peer community engagement as retention tool Room 218
Many institutions have been charged to improve their student persistence, completion and
graduation rates. One recent report found community engagement can be a powerful tool
in these efforts. Learn about Connect2Complete, a pilot program that utilizes peer
advocates and community engagement activities with developmental education students to
help propel them on a path toward credential completion.

SESSION C: Campus-based food pantries and Campus Kitchen Initiatives Welsh Hills Room
Hunger is not isolated to poor communities; it is also on our campuses. Learn about three
different institutional approaches to the creation of food pantries for students in need and
the direct service and service-learning opportunities created on campus as a result. Also
learn about Kent State’s innovative and award-winning Campus Kitchen project which
reduces food waste and prepares nourishing meals for local families.
