Navigating towards the Island of San Giorgio. At dawn, San Giorgio peaks through the morning fog revealing its layers of history. It's better
known for the Benedictine Monastery, which over time gained potential power and authority
Navigando verso San Giorgio. over the region. Infact in 1800, this tiny island gave hospitality for the Papal Conclave of 1880
under Pope Pio VII. Great artists and famous architects expanded and restored the Church of
San Giorgio. The refectory is an opera of Palladio, whilest the immense canvas, that is adorning
the inside, was painting by Veronese. This little island, facing proudly Venice’s most famous square
is now the headquarters of the Cini Foundation. The foundation of Giorgio Cini works to
preserve among others these precious works of art.
L’Isola di San Giorgio, che ci appare nella nebbia del mattino, deve la sua notorieta' alla
fondazione di un convento Benedettino che nel tempo divenne cosi' autorevole e potente tanto
che nel 1800 ospito' addirittura il Conclave che elesse Papa Pio VII. Ai lavori di ampliamento e
restauro della abbazia vennero chiamati grandi artisti dell’epoca e famosi architetti: il
Refettorio e' opera del Palladio e il Veronese dipinse l’immensa tela che lo orna. Oggi alla
Fondazione Giorgio Cini e' affidata la cura di questo lembo di terra che si affaccia su Piazza
San Marco.

An architectural icon, and one
of the most famous bridges in
Venice sits next to the Rialto
market. The bridge was once a
simple pontoon bridge, however,
the development and importance
of the Rialto market on the
eastern bank increased traffic
and necessitated the building of a
more suitable structure. However,
it collapsed under the weight of
a crowd watching the passage of
the Marchese of Ferrara's bride.
Rebuilt in stone founded now on
12,000 Elm poles.

di Venezia si rifa' certamente al
vicino mercato di Rialto. La 30.31
crescente importanza di questa
area rese necessario sostituire
il vecchio ponte di barche con un
nuovo manufatto. Questo primo
ponte crollo' sotto il peso della
folla radunatasi per assistere
al passaggio della sposa del
Marchese di Ferrara. Ricostruito
in pietra poggia, oggi, su 12.000
pali d’olmo.
18. The Island of Giudecca and
the “Arched Passages” of Calle Montorio.

The Island of Giudecca in antiquity, was named “Sina Longa” and no doubt refers
to the elongated shape of the island. The actual modern name “Giudecca” could
have derived from the existence of the first Jewish neighborhood or “ghetto” or
perhaps, another possibility of the etymology lies simply in the old Venetian
Republic dialectical language. The dialectical word “zudegar” means “to judge” or
coined expression “aggiudicata” means “assigned” as in to assign an area of land to
a noble family to partition. Along the portion of coastline facing the island of
Venice, there are several porticos called “sotoporteghi”. These are “arched passages”
leading to small courts, which in turn open up unto a grid of small streets
connecting the homes of the island. On the extreme oriental side of the island lies
the Stucky Mill (Mulino Stucky). The Mill is a historical building exemplifying
Neo-Gothic architecture applied in an industrial context. 32.33
L’Isola della Giudecca era anticamente conosciuta con il nome di “Sina Longa”,
forse per la sua forma allungata, mentre l’attuale nome deriverebbe dalla presenza
sull’isola del primo ghetto ebraico. Un’a ltra interpretazione farebbe invece risalire
il nome al toponimo “zudegar”, giudicare in veneziano antico, definizione coniata
per indicare una zona “aggiudicata” dalla Repubblica Veneziana ad alcune nobili
famiglie esiliate nel IX secolo. Lungo la sua riva che guarda Venezia si nota la
presenza di diversi “sotoporteghi”, passaggi ad arco che introducono a cortili che
a loro volta aprono al reticolo di viuzze che corrono tra le case dell’Isola.
All’estremita' occidentale sorge il complesso di Mulino Stucky, edificio storico che
costituisce uno dei maggiori esempi di architettura neogotica applicata ad un
edificio industriale.
20. Rio S. Eufemia.
Located on the Island of Giudecca, the Rio Santa Eufemia cuts the island in two from
north to south, and allows for spectacular views into the open sea or towards the
lagoon. The canal separating Giudecca from Venice begins at the Station of Marittima,
and runs the length of the Fondamenta delle Zattere, and finishes in the heart of
Venice, at Piazza San Marco. Piazza San Marco or Saint Mark’s Square is trapezoidal
in shape and located directly in front of the basilica. The Square hosts many splendors,
among which the Bell Tower with its 100 meters in height stands erect as a symbol
of Venice.

Posto sull’Isola della Giudecca, il Rio Santa Eufemia la taglia in due, da nord a sud, e
permette di affacciarsi sulla laguna e gettare uno sguardo verso il mare aperto. Il
canale che separa la Giudecca da Venezia inizia a ridosso della Stazione Marittima,
corre lungo le Fondamenta delle Zattere e sfocia nel bacino di San Marco; qui
troviamo una delle piazze piu' famose e visitate al mondo. La Piazza di San Marco ha
una forma trapezoidale e, di fronte alla basilica, compare il campanile che con i suoi
quasi 100 metri di altezza si erge a simbolo di Venezia.
