Makassar, is the provincial capital of South Sulawesi, Indonesia, and the
largest city on Sulawesi Island. From 1971 to 1999, the city was named Ujung
Pandang, after a precolonial fort in the city, and the two names are often used
interchangeably.
The port city is located at 5°8'S 119°25'E Coordinates: 5°8'S 119°25'E, on the
southwest coast of the island of Sulawesi, facing the Makassar Strait. Its area
is 175.77 km2 and has population of around 1.4 million.

City Geography
Makassar city located at 5°8'S, 119°25'E with
altitude of 1-25 meter above mean sea level
(AMSL). The land area is around 175.77 Km2,
including eleven islands in Maassar Strait. The
territory expands in more than 100 square-km of
water area, and lies in plain coastal area with 0-
5 degree of inclination to west. The area borders
are Pangkep region in the north, Maros region in
the east, Gowa region in the south and Makassar
straits in the west. In total, there are 14 sub-
districts and 143 sub-sub districts.
Makassar has a strategic position because it was crossing lanes of traffic from
the south and north of the province of Sulawesi, from the west to the eastern
region of Indonesia and from the north to the south of Indonesia. In other words,
the coordinates of the city of Makassar was 119 degrees east longitude and
5.8 degrees south latitude with an altitude varying between 1-25 meters above
sea level. Makassar is the flat coastal areas with a slope of 0-5 degrees to the
west, flanked by two sungai.Tallo estuaries which empties into the northern part
of the city and the river which empties into the southern Jeneberang city. The
total area of the city of Makassar totaling approximately 175.77 km2 land and
includes 11 islands in the Strait of Makassar plus water area of approximately
100 km ÂČ.

The number of districts in the city of Makassar as many as 14 sub-
districts and 143 villages. Among kecamatan's, there are seven
districts bordering the coast districts Tamalate, Mariso, Wajo, Ujung
Tanah, Tallo, Tamalanrea and Biringkanaya.

From the cursory description of the location and geography of Makassar,
explaining that geographically, the city of Makassar is very strategic in
terms of economic and political interests. In economic terms, a node

strike by tsunami, since Makassar is shield by another Island from eitheir
Hindia nor Pasific Ocean. Usually Makassar climate change so extream,
and it make bad impact, based on data we have, Makassar just have
tornado, but it not so hard, just in few area in south sulawesi, but not in
Makassar. In generally, Makassar have not bad natural disaster

Total population of Makassar in the 2011 year is 1.352.136 people; 667.681
males and 684.455 females. In the meantime total population of Makassar in
the 2010 year is 1339374 people. The computation of population by sex can
showed with sex ratio. Sex ratio of Makassar population in the 2010 year is
97,55 percent, is means that for each 100 population of females be found 98
population of males.

Distribution of population of Makassar by subdistricts showed that population
is concentrated in Tamalate subdistricts area, is 172.506 population or 12,76
percent of total population is followed in biringkanaya sub district 169.340
(12,52 percent). Rappocini subdistricts 152.531 (11,28 percent) and lowest is
Ujung Pandang subdistricts 27.160 (2,01 percent ) of population. Looking at it
from population density per each square kilometer, Makassar subdistricts has
adensity of highest population is 32.730 population per each square kilometer
is followed. Mariso subdistricts (30.993), Bontoala subdistricts (29.872), and
Mamajang subdistricts(26.471) Tamalanrea subdistricts has population density
is lowest about (3.272), than Biringkanaya subdistricts (3.512), Manggala
subdistricts (4.896), Ujung Tanah subdistricts (7935), Panakkukang subdistrcts
(8.371) population per each kilometer.
Population density which still lower in subdistricts areal development,
especially in 3 subdistrists, is Biringkanaya, Tamalanrea, Manggala,

Information of Social Culture Condition
Makassar is comprised several ethnic groups. The dominants are Bugis,
Makassar, Mandar and Toraja. These four ethnic groups live together side by
side peacefully. Because the strategic location of Makassar, in the last 10
years, this city development rapidly growing, there are so many local &
International factory was built in this city, more than 50 local and international
stores were opened in this city. As the development grow, number of population
also growth rapidly, a lot of people from Java, Borneo, Sumatera, Maluku &
Papua are transmigrated to Makassar. There are also other ethnic groups such
as Chinese, Malay, and other migrant groups from outside of Indonesia. This
condition implies that Makassar is a metropolis city, still living in its traditional
values and way of living but is open and responsive to other things different
from its own identity. The presence of these various ethnic groups and
backgrounds to work or get education in Makassar describes the variety of
background that shapes the city dynamics. Local regulation No.2/2000 about
Local Development Foundation Model (Pola Dasar Pembangunan Daerah)
states the vision of Makassar City: âMakassar is a Maritime, Trading, Global,
Cultural and Service city that is Global-oriented, Environmentally driven and a
Friendly Cityâ. Growth and development of a maritime culture in daily life,
realization of safe and steady trading and also conducive to education
atmosphere reflect the vision. In pursuing one of its missions, which is
supporting the improvement of human resource quality, Makassar is making a
lot of effort to upgrade educational policy, as well as to encourage favorable
climate for civil organizations.
Peopleâs Behavior
Makassar people are friendly and can accept a foreigner as well as a cultured
person. People often make a Makassar event that aims to enhance and
preserve the culture, such as Makassar International Festival Writing, I La

and social care unselfishly and inil group is one concept that makes the Bugis-
Makassar able to survive and respected in their journey out of their city, pacce
a compassionate nature and a sense of burden and suffering of others. The
concept of siri 'na pacce not only shared by these two tribes (Bugis and
Makassar), but also shared by other tribes who inhabited the land such as
Mandar tribe and Tator, and mention only the vocabulary that is different, but
the philosophy of ideological have similarities.
Education Level and Religion
Makassar city's population educated majority secondary school. For Diploma
and Bachelor Degree level education is not in the scale of the majority although
many continue their studies to higher education, but sometimes some of them
have to drop out from the college for several excuses.
Religious beliefs largely embraced Islam Muhamaddiyah, NU, Tabliq Jama'ah,
Ahmadiyah, Hizbut Thahrir. Catholic and Protestant Christians in number 2
after the Islamic. In addition there are also Buddhist, Hindu, and Khonghuchu
as well.
Language
Day-to-day language used by Makassar people is Bahasa with Makassar
dialect. Makassar dialect is simply done by adding additional words âjiâ , âtoâ,
âmiâ and âpiâ. As Makassar becomes the metropolitan city, there are many
languages from outside Makassar spoken in our city.
Traditional Foods and Drinks
Coto Makassar
Typical regional dishes such as soup fry with
basic materials consisting of colon, liver, brain,
or horse beef, cooked with herbs lemongrass,
galangal, coriander, cumin, onion, garlic, salt
has been refined, bay leaves, lemon juice, and
nuts. In general, Coto Makassar served / eaten
with a ketupat or burasa. It is thick, it is spicy,
and it is tantalising!

Sop Konro
This traditional food from Makassar is presented
in the form of soup or stew burned with basic
ingredients such as cow or buffalo ribs, cooked /
baked with spices coriander, cumin, lemongrass,
kaloa, onion, garlic, salt, mashed vitsin already.
Sop Konro generally served/eaten with white rice
and sambal.
Sop Saudara
Typical regional cuisine in the form of soup fry
with basic ingredients such as beef / buffalo
cooked with various spices and served with
white rice or ketupat with Fish Grill in addition
side dish.
Pisang Epe
Heavenly grilled banana topped with
perfectly melted brown sugar, great as
a snack or a heavenly dessert.
Es Pallu Butung
Made from bananas that have been cut into
pieces, cooked with coconut milk fed wheat flour,
sugar, vanilla, and a pinch of salt and served with
shaved ice and red syrup.

Mi Titi
A popular traditional food for locals,
it is dried noodle served with thick
gravy and sliced chicken, shrimp,
mushrooms, liver and squid. Eat like a
local with this dish!
Es Pisang Ijo
Made of plantains, wrapped in flour that has been
given a coconut milk and pandan leaves water as
dyes and fragrances that are green, served with a
sauce that was given shaved ice and syrup.
Barongko
Barongko is typical desserts Bugis-Makassar
area made from banana fruit ripe steamed
with banana leaves. Previously, during the reign
of the kingdom in South Sulawesi, Barongko a
fancy dessert, and only served to kings, and
served at certain moments, such as weddings,
birthdays, and more.
Sarabba
Traditional drink made from a mixture of
ginger, egg yolks, sugar, milk and pepper.
Sarabba fit to expel cold, warm, wind issuing
from the body when cold. Makassar youth
mostly consumed as a restorer stamina
because the yolk is believed to be the restorer
stamina (herbal medicine), bidders tired after a
day of activities and to warm the body. It is
ussually serves with fried banana.

Ballo
Ballo is Traditional alcohol from Bugis-Makassar Ethnic. Some people also
called it Tuak. Consists of some sort according to type of palm tree that is, Nipa
and Tala / Lontara. The ingridients being fermentation before.
Beside the aboves traditional foods and drinks, there are still many more other
Makassar traditional foods, such as Pallu Mara, pallu pallu Ce'la, Pallu Basa,
Kaloakaneka, etc.
Traditional Arts and Handicraft
Badik
Badik is a knife that has a
specific form developed by the
Bugis and Makassar, has a
single-sided or double sharp,
blade-shaped asymmetrical and
sometimes decorated with
prestige.
According to the Bugis and Makassar each type of badik has the power to affect
condition, the state and the lives of their owners. Badik is used not only for
selfdefense or hunting, but also an identity of an ethnic or cultural group. Badik
is not only in Makassar but also in Bugis and Mandar, of course, with different
names and forms . Badik consists of 3 parts: upstream (butt), blade (iron) and
as a complement to the Banoang (badik sheath)
In South Sulawesi, special Bugis and Makassar, badik used as a symbol of
maturity. Giving the badik of a father to his son indicates that the child has
grown up and able to be given responsibility
Harp
One of the traditional stringed instruments. The history of the harp is found or
created by a sailor, so that its shape resembles a boat has two strings, is taken
as the discovery of the boat halyard. Usually displayed at the pick-up of guests,
wedding, celebration, even entertainment on the anniversary

Pakarena Dance
Pakarena is a traditional
dance from Makassar.
Pakarena dance
originated from the story
of the myth of separation
residents boting rainbow
(heavenly land) with the
inhabitants of lino (earth)
of antiquity. Before the
moments of separation,

rainbow lino on the way of life,
farming, livestock
breeding, hunting through Garak to-hand movements, body and legs.

A traditional dance to welcoming a guest. The dancers will throw rice or flower
to the guest from the âbosaraâ that they hold during dance.

Transportation
ï· Land
In Makassar, there are around 6,000
Mini buses (pete-pete in local language),
which serves as the main transportation to
commute in the city. Big bus is not available
for public use within the city but used as
transportation between Makassar and the
surrounding cities. Recently mode of
transportation had converted to bus way, it
serves air bus for nice traveling.
Taksi Is most excslusive transportation in
Makassar. Recently, Makassar has 7 taxi
company who organized by government
and prive company. Becak, as the
traditional transportation, is used for tourism
purpose and most of them operates around
tourist destination area.
For Pete-pete, it has its own code in front of
it and for each code, it has its own route. So
pay attention first on it before using it or you
can ask the driver your destination and they
will tell you if you can use it or not. You have
to pay 4000 IDR each time you use it.

and operated by PT.
Angkasa Pura I. The new
terminal was opened on
20 August 2008. This
airport is the main
gateway for flights to the
eastern part of Indonesia,
and named after Sultan
Hasanuddin, a King of
Gowa, who fought against the Dutch in the 1660s. Sultan Hasanuddin
International Airport is located on the border of Makassar, and Maros, a
suburb in South Sulawesi, approximately 15 minutes (17 km) from
Makassar city via Tollway or 20 minutes (23 km) via regular road.
Old Terminal
This terminal not longer used for commercial flights because of
overcapacity. Since the new terminal opened on 20 August 2008, all
operational commercial flights moved from old terminal to new terminal.
Then, this terminal is used by the TNI-AU (Indonesian Air Force) which
houses Skadron Udara 11 (Air Squadron 11).
New Terminal

Located in southern side of old terminal new terminal connected by
Raya Bandara 1 Road. This terminal used new concept eco-airport and
adopted traditional house style of South Sulawesi. With capacity 7
million passengers and in 2010 has served 5 million passengers, this

Health Facilities
Until the end of 2006, the number of health facility in Makassar is 14 for general
hospital, 3 for hospital for special care, and 17 for maternity hospital. There are
also health center as much as 95 health centers from 4 different categories.

Education Facilities
There are hundreds, even thousands, basic and middle-level education
facilities in Makassar, both public and private. As for higher education, at least
there are 15 public and private universities in the city. The biggest are
Hasanuddin University, Indonesian Moslem University, and Makassar Public
University. as a biggest university, Hasanuddin University will be our target for
AIESEC development in Makassar, and the profile will be given in the next
section.
