  1. Companies everywhere are looking for effective strategies to harness the benefits of the cloud without disrupting current business models. As the industry ventures into the Cloud Era, service providers and Web 2.0 companies are seeking more efficient and differentiated cloud solutions to reduce the TCO of IT, attract and retain customers, and increase market share. They need open and flexible cloud solutions that free them from vendor lock-in so they can leverage existing investments and choose the best possible components for their cloud. They need access to source code and open APIs to innovate and build value-added services, while still having access to enterprise class support and services. Their customers want to choose the architecture and hypervisor that’s right for them.At the same time, enterprises are looking to the cloud to enable more agile, elastic, on-demand IT services. In both cases, they need the right solutions to build, scale, and manage cloud services.Legacy systems and architectures cannot respond to changing cloud workloads. When administrators try to build clouds using legacy infrastructure they run into operational complexities created by disconnected technology silos that were never built to work together seamlessly. Traditional physical infrastructure is static and difficult to automate. It is built assuming frequent manual intervention and a much lower order of scale. Virtualization, on the other hand, is inherently abstract and delivers full potential when deployed on infrastructure with programmable, abstracted configuration. Traditional physical infrastructure tends to hamper the speed of delivery that virtual infrastructure enables. Cloud computing architecture is designed to run Amazon-style clouds but can uniquely also compliment and manage server virtualized environments. Networking-as-a-Service becoming key.Networking-as-a-Service is becoming a key differentiator for providers looking to deliver advanced enterprise solutions in the cloud. Networks are a critical component of any large public or private cloud deployment.Desktop and application virtualization and mobility are driving a need for more efficient private clouds and public cloud access. As enterprise customers have completed their initial product deployments, they have made it clear that they would like to “go virtual” more rapidly with ALL users across their enterprise, and that doing so requires even more cost effective private cloud deployments, and the ability to “burst” to public clouds for timing or economic reasons.Cloud interoperability. In an increasingly connected world, cloud interoperability and portability between private, hybrid, and public clouds is one of the top requirements for enterprises building clouds today. As their computing needs and business requirements change, customers need the freedom to switch providers and move applications and workloads around without the risk of vendor lock-in.
  2. Citrix CloudPlatform on Cisco UCS — The joint solution is comprised of Citrix CloudPlatform running on Cisco UCS. Citrix CloudPlatform is a broad solution that includes a commercially certified and packaged Apache CloudStack product, XenServer Advanced Edition, and native integration with NetScaler. Cisco UCS is an extremely scalable, automated/programmable infrastructure for cloud deployment. The CloudPlatform user interface is integrated with UCS Manager to provide seamless cloud infrastructure management.Embedded automation. Self-integrating infrastructure components add capacity without added complexity and enable dynamic resource provisioning. CloudPlatform programmatic access to UCS Manager enables integrated infrastructure management. Complete view. Single pane of glass provides cloud administrators with a single command and control view for their entire cloud environment, even if it spans multiple zones across the globe. A real-time view of the aggregated storage, IP pools, CPU, memory, and other resources in use gives better visibility and control over the cloud.Hybrid cloud integration. Seamlessly migrate workloads between private and public clouds.Tight integration with NetScaler. Increases security, performance, and connectivity between public and private clouds.True cloud service. Project Excalibur will bring together a wide range of Citrix technologies to help customers deliver any Windows app or desktop as a true cloud service. By leveraging the Citrix CloudPlatform, Excalibur will also make it easy for existing Citrix customers to adopt new features at whatever pace they like, allowing them to “mix-and-match” different versions of Windows Server, XenApp and XenDesktop – and span across any mix of public and private clouds.Open. The solution is open and works with leading storage solutions, hypervisors, value-added solutions, and external cloud services, which improves transparency, flexibility, and cost while ending vendor lock-in.
  3. Proven solutionCitrix cloud solutions. Powers 4 of the top 5 largest public clouds (Amazon, Rackspace, GoGrid, Softlayer), all of which leverage Citrix XenServer or Xen as the virtualization platform of choice or NetScaler for cloud networking. Citrix CloudPlatform is designed to ensure organizations can build production cloud environments on an open source platform designed for economics, elasticity, and scale – complete with commercial certification and support from Citrix. Citrix CloudPlatform already has more than 30,000 community members, thousands of certified apps, and hundreds of production clouds.Cisco UCS. Customers across the world have chosen Cisco UCS as the platform for their clouds – both private and public – because UCS was built to automate infrastructure management and provide on-demand resources for varied workloads. UCS provides dynamically configurable compute and network capabilities with an API control interface that integrates directly with cloud software stacks. Resource pooling, elasticity, and programmability are three fundamental infrastructure requirements of cloud computing uniquely delivered by UCS for a wide range of bare-metal and virtual workloads.Massively scalable. To tens of thousands of servers across geographically distributed datacenters.Highly available workload deliveryDerived from both the physical infrastructure and the cloud architecture. Application resiliency is an outcome of the highly available UCS architecture, which combines redundant path physical design with the capability to rapidly provision pre-configured infrastructure for failed cloud nodes. No single component failure can cause cluster or cloud-wide outage, enabling downtime-free management server maintenance and reducing the workload of managing a large-scale cloud deployment.Simplified management. Tested and validated. Tested and validated reference architecture saves time, leverages the knowledge and best practices of experts to do it right. Scaling data helps customers understand the capabilities of cloud before deploying.Quickly and easily evolve. Quickly and easily evolve virtualized datacenter resources to automated, elastic, self-service IT delivery models using the same technologies on which the world’s most successful clouds are built.Integrated programmatic infrastructure management.CloudPlatform programmatic access to UCS Manager enables integrated infrastructure management. Built from the ground up to support virtualization, Cisco UCS Manager provides unified, centralized, embedded management of hardware components across multiple chassis and thousands of virtual machines.Rich, out-of-the-box user experienceUser interface enables even the most novice cloud user to become an expert in building, launching, and managing their own workloads on the cloud. Single pane of glass provides cloud administrators with a single command and control view for their entire cloud environment, even if it spans multiple zones across the globe. A real-time view of the aggregated storage, IP pools, CPU, memory, and other resources in use gives better visibility and control over the cloud. The solution can be easily integrated with existing portals for seamless administration.Works within existing IT infrastructureWith support for embedded software-based network management, VLAN, and direct-attached IP.CloudPlatform is a hypervisor agnostic cloud orchestration platform that is optimized for XenServer but is also committed to supporting multiple hypervisors: including OVM 2.2, vSphere 4.1, and KVM on RHEL 5.6, 6.0, and 6.1. CloudPlatform also supports bare metal provisioning. Support for Microsoft Hyper-V is targeted for late 2012.Tight integration with NetScaler. Increases security, performance, and connectivity between public and private clouds.Transform existing windows apps, desktops, and any workload to cloud servicesProject Excalibur will bring together a wide range of Citrix technologies to help customers deliver any Windows app or desktop as a true cloud service. By leveraging the Citrix CloudPlatform, Excalibur will also make it easy for existing Citrix customers to adopt new features at whatever pace they like, allowing them to “mix-and-match” different versions of Windows Server, XenApp and XenDesktop – and span across any mix of public and private clouds.Real-time visibility and reportingDelegated administration features make it simple for enterprises to set up utilization charge-backs, user self-administration, approved virtual machine template libraries and security controls to govern how workers utilize the cloud.CloudPlatform monitors cluster-level capacity (e.g., RAM, CPU, storage) and alerts when the utilization reaches an administrator-defined threshold.Reporting and usage metering. Orchestrate the non-technical elements of service delivery such as billing and metering.Bridges public and private cloud paradigmsBuild on top of a standards-based, open solution that is widely adopted by both service providers and enterprises.Allows low recovery time objective (RTO) Disaster Recovery environments to be built, provides secure extension of environments for internal IT/shared services organizations, and optimizes secure access between community clouds.Highly efficientBetter resource utilization means fewer servers are required. UCS Unified Fabric routes all traffic (IP, Fiber Channel, and management) over a single fabric, reducing the number of switches, adapters and cables Fewer components consume less power.Less components and common technologies means less technologies to support.Leverage existing cloud investmentsAmazon API compatibility. Federation with industry-leading cloud provider Amazon simplifies hybrid cloud workload migration.Secure by designSecure multi-tenancy ensures that memory, CPU, network and storage resources are both available and isolated between users.
  4. The UCS reference architecture for CloudPlatform is designed to simplify your cloud Deployment. Cloud is a confusing and complicated topic, and there lots of independent solutions out there that aren’t proven to work together. This reference architecture reduces the amount of time it takes you to deploy Infrastructure-as-a-Service Cloud by provide a pre-tested and validated hardware and software pairing. The reference architecture also provides best practices for configuration CloudPlatform with UCS so that you can be assured your cloud is properly constructed.Additionally the reference architecture provides some scaling data with example workloads so you can have an idea of what your cloud will be capable of before you invest.
  5. Let’s compare CloudPlatform with legacy server architecture versus Cisco’s UCS. CloudPlatform has multiple modules which form a comprehensive cloud solution, one of which is the resource management modules for Server, Networking, and Storage management.<Click>The components can manage the virtual infrastructure completely and provide great flexibility. But what happens if you want to deliver physical as-a-service, or if you run out of resources in your physical infrastructure?<Click>By using UCS with CloudPlatform, you enable full control over both the physical and virtual infrastructure. This makes it possible to deliver services that use physical servers. This additionally enables rapid deployment of additional cloud resources to scale CloudPlatform to meet your customer’s demands.
  6. Production-ready. Over 100 large-scale clouds are built on CloudPlatform, including BT, KT, China Telecom, Datapipe, GoDaddy, Nokia, University of Hokkaido, IDCFrontier, and ZyngaCloudPlatform, powered by Apache CloudStack, is the most mature, battle-tested platform, with $1B in cloud services revenue being generated on it for both public and private clouds including Telcos, service providers, Web 2.0 companies, government organizations, and large enterprises. University of Sao Paulo University of São Paulo, (short is USP) is a public university in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. It is the largest Brazilian university and the country's most prestigious educational institution. More than 25% of the articles published by Brazilian researchers in high quality conferences and journals are produced at the University of São Paulo.Challenges:Need to consolidate disparate IT “Computing Silos” across 80 school units (ex: School of Engineering) across 5 campuses in Brazil.Consistency of IT practices, primarily elimination of loss of research / backup and retention policies.5000 researches having their own IT budget were buying local storage for their research data. Loss of research data and managing storage were huge problem areas.Solution:Citrix and Cisco provided the ability to deliver a DevOps/Amazon-like centric private enterprise cloud across all of USP. Citrix’s complete solution (infrastructure & business logic enabler) was key deal enablerResults:USP has three critical success factors for the project which Citrix is filling/developing gap fill for:Self service across USP IT AdminsAdoption of self service cloud across all USP schoolsDR/Failover/Recovery of dataBTBT was looking to build a private/public cloud platform for their enterprise customers. They chose CloudPlatform on for because it is designed with Service Providers in mind, but is hypervisor agnostic,.Public and private zones and rich API were major factors as well. They have now been using CloudPlatform on UCS for nearly 2 years.KIVBFKTVBF did a public tendering in 2011 and Comparex, that had the best offer, had CloudPlatform as central part of their concept/solution.The tendering included a complete virtualization platform/cloudplatform: storage, network, server, hypervisor, application-virtualization, desktop virtualization, platform management, monitoring, self-service, billing, wan-optimization and security. They chose CloudPlatform because:- CloudPlatform is open source and uses many industy standards - CloudPlatform supports many different hypervisors.Cloudplatform supports CISCO UCS and NETAPP storage, but there are no restrictions for the hardware that can be used instead. Results: They are building a community cloud for about 600 local authorities/cities/towns in the Southwest of Germany (region of KIVBF).They will move all of their (about 60, still growing) asp-solutions to the platform. Additionally we offer IaaS (for internal and external users) and DaaS including MS Office, Exchange, Sharepoint, etc.As basic infrastructure they use CISCO UCS (servers and network within the datacenter), NetApp for storage management, NetScaler/Accessgateway for access and wan-optimization.They use XENSERVER as the  preferred hypervisor. They might also use KVM or OVM because of certification and software licensing requirements e.g., ORACLE.“According to our experience Open Sources empowers the development of product. The government of the federate state "Baden-Württemberg" of Germany recommends to use Open Source-products. Our customers ask us to use products with an Open Source - Background, because they want to support the idea behind Open Source.”
