1. Administering 6-8 glasses of water an hour before PET/CT imaging of the small bowel can help distinguish physiological from pathological FDG uptake by distending the bowel. 2. Giving patients 2-4 glasses of water before imaging the stomach or areas with suspected gastric cancer can improve image quality and diagnostic accuracy by reducing physiological FDG uptake and distending the stomach. 3. Performing a delayed imaging study of the colon 1-2 hours after the initial scan and administering 6-8 glasses of water in between can help differentiate physiological from pathological FDG uptake in the colon in some cases.
