Teenage Suicide:
The Fallen Ones

Instead of the regular sweet messages she got messages that read, "I don't know if I want to be
friends with you anymore because I've heard that you are not very nice to your friends.
Everybody in O'Fallon knows who you are. You are a bad person and everybody hates you. Have
a bad rest of your life. The world would be a better place without you." Megan was found 20
minutes later in her bedroom. She hanged herself from her closet door. 6 weeks after the funeral,
her parents discovered that 'Josh' never existed. It was a fake account made by the parents of the
girl who lived down the street. This goes to show...you never know who you could really be talking
to.
Problems At Home Many teens always consider suicide when they have trouble at home. Whether
it's because of parents splitting up, grades dropping, or even feeling accepted, teens have a very
hard time dealing. Divorce is usually the main cause of problems in the household. Some teens
blame themselves and think it's their fault their parents didn't stay together. It's always the same. If a
teen's grade drops, one might be scolded, and feel worthless. Acceptance is another big factor. Many
teens that decide they are homosexual might be afraid of being accepted by

their family. All these things contribute to making teens have low self–confidence about themselves
and making them feel worthless. Unfortunately, they lean towards suicide. ––Minden,

Thesis Statement For Teen Suicide
Research Question:
How can teen suicide be prevented?
Thesis Statement:
Even though teen suicide is one of the leading causes of deaths in teenagers, there are many ways it
can be prevented.
Summary of Topic:
Suicide is the third leading cause of deaths in adolescents in the United States. Teensuicide is also
often referred to as a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Teens so often are suicidal and
attempt suicide as a call for help from others. They have no intention in dying they are just trying to
cry out for help from anyone that will listen. Many reasons cause teen to attempt suicide, varying
from bullying to psychological disorders. In fact, psychological disorders accounts for about 90%
of teens who attempt or commit suicide. Teenagers are also at higher risk of suicide when they are

Teen suicide is something that is endless, it will never stop but if everyone was educated on it, it
could help prevent deaths. I think with people provided with statistics and further information
can help avoid adolescent suicide attempts. I think most teen suicide cases could be prevent if we
knew the signs to look for and the ways to stop it. I believe parents would feel safer if they knew
knowledge on the issue and how to handle it. The intended audiences for this essay is parents or
friends of suicidal teens. This essay is important because, as mentioned earlier, we need to be
educated on suicide to end tons of tragedies. It is also important to be aware of the warning signs
to help prevent. This essay is relevant because teen suicide is a war that happens daily, and will
continue to happen, until we take control of the situation and do something to stop it. If family
members were informed of the cause and symptoms leading up to the attempt of suicide, then there
is less likely that teenagers would try and commit

Teen Suicide
Suicide is a growing problem in American culture. Sadly, teens are affected the most. Teen suicide
is increasing rapidly. "About 5,000 teens in the United States kill themselves each year" (Peacock,
4). Suicide among teens is a serious and devastating crisis. More teens are taking their lives today
than ever before. Teen suicide does not affect one specific type of teen; it affects any type of teen.
There are a variety of reasons teens resort to committing suicide. Many people are working for the
prevention of teen suicide. Teen suicide needs to be viewed as a serious problem, analyzed, and
prevented.

Violence at home has a lot of impact. Watching violent things can hurt a teens mind and make them
want to end the violence therefore they take their life. Teens may not be able to handle one more
situation, even the smallest things, ending a relationship, failing at school, or getting blamed for
something, all those things can trigger suicidal thoughts. Drugs and alcohol can affect teens too.
"Drugs and alcohol increase thinking and anger" (Peacock, 19). "Problems with sexual identity,
pregnancy, or pressures to succeed also can play a role" (Peacock, 16).Sexual Identity causes suicide.
Teens that struggle with a different sexual identity; struggle with keeping it a secret. Teens that come
out may be treated as outcasts. The frequently get named–called, bullied, and other harassments.
Girls that deal with a teen pregnancy take their life because of embarrassment to family, peers, and
the father of the child. Talent kids have suicide attempts. The pressure to succeed is overwhelming
and they cannot take it anymore. "In general, teens who kill themselves want to escape
overpowering problems and painful feelings" (Peacock, 10). The number one thing that triggers
suicidal thoughts is depression. Depression is a serious mental illness. More than 60 percent of all
people who killed themselves dealt with depression (Peacock, 18). Depression is the number one

Suicide doesn't just happen out of the blue, many events and warning signs lead up to the act. The
medical condition of depression and suicide usually goes hand in hand. They usual experience strong
feelings of stress, self–doubt, and confusion. They can also be troubled by the pressure to succeed,
financial uncertainty and other fears while growing up. But according to experts, more than eighty
percent of the time they are extremely depressed, and their minds are focused on the terrible
emotional pain that they are currently going through.(Colman 75). In their depression, Most often

that their situation is hopeless and that the world would be better off without them.
"FACT: Few suicides happen without some kind of warning. Most teenagers who have attempted or
committed suicide will leave several hints and warning signs along the way. Some teens will leave
hints or say things to others suitably letting them know what they are thinking about and how they
are feeling. A common statement they usually make "The world will be better off without me,
nobody would care anyways" or the heavy conversation about death and what it is like. Some even
give away personal belongings. Others begin by saying goodbye.

Essay about Suicide
Someone, somewhere, commits suicide every 18 minutes. You might never be able to tell who it
will be, it could be the person sitting right next . Statistics reveal that approximately three million
youths, between 12–18, have either thought about or attempted suicide in the past year. More than 1
/3, actually succeeded.
Only in the past two decades, have depression and suicide been taken seriously. Depression is an
illness that involves the body, mood and thoughts. Depression affects the way a person eats and
sleeps, feels about themselves, and the way they think of the things around them. It comes as no
surprise to discover that adolescent depression is strongly linked to teen suicide. Adolescent suicide

Adolescence is a stressful experience for all teens. It is a time of physical and social changes
producing rapid mood swings from sadness to elation. Even an emotionally healthy teenager may
have the constant fear of not being good enough, not making the varsity team, or getting good
grades. Special situations such as a parents divorce can trigger intense sadness and feelings of
wanting to die.
People who usually experience depression, can seem fine. But there are many key signs to show that
they are depressed. Such as, change in school performance, eating habits change, constant
unhappiness, low self esteem, guilt, social isolation, inability to concentrate, irritable or angered
easily, or has a severe lost of energy.
For a teen suffering from severe depression, has feelings of worthlessness that dominates their day.
Despair is ever present and emotional pain feels like it will never end. Any situation of anger or
disappointment may cause the teen to cross the line from wanting to die, to actually trying to kill
themselves.
Many of them feel pains inside of them, that they can't describe when someone asks them how they
feel. They just know that they are sad, or angry, or upset. Many teenagers will try to communicate

Adolescence is a stage where the youth face various issues. For instance, their bodies are changing
rapidly, and they have an urgent desire to explore. Teenage experiences differ across individuals
whereby some enjoy admiration while others feel rejected. The adverse behaviors result in
significant concerns among the adolescents as some commit suicide while others just consider it.
Crepeau–Hobson states that suicide has been listed as the third cause of death among youths
between the ages of 10–24 (810). He further adds that a large percentage of the adolescents have also
been reported to have contemplated or attempted to take their own lives. In the United States,
addressing the issue of suicide has been made an urgent priority by the national government because
besides it raising the mortality rate in the country, it contributes to increased hospitalization (Pena et
al. 29). Teenage suicide should be prevented by substance abuse treatment and violence prevention,
parental involvement, and implementation of suicide risk assessment procedures in educational
institutions.
One of the common behaviors among the adolescents is their desire to try out new things. The
young adults who are already involved in drug abuse mislead the young generation that such
practices are considered cool. The innocent children end up indulging in various substances such as
alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and with time they graduate to hard drugs like heroin and cocaine.

Each day 86 Americans take their own lives and another 1,500 attempts to do so. Even more
disturbing is that suicide among a young people nation wide have increased dramatically in recent
years. In fact thousands of teenagers each year commit suicide. It is the third leading cause of death
among young adults aged 15–24. With the first two leading causes being unintentional injury and
homicide. There are many reasons why teenagers feel the need to take their own life. They are at a

Violence in the home itself is worse. The home to adolescents is a place of comfort, if something
is wrong at school, then home is where they can forget about it. But if there is violence occurring
at the home, then children will not want to go there. This is the start of the buildup of pressure.
Teenagers feel the pressure of maintaining good grades during school. If the adolescent is doing
poorly in school, then he or she will feel the pressure to succeed and to do better in school work.
Stress is a basis for most of the problems teenagers will encounter during high school and college.
School work can be overwhelming especially for young adults. Schools are now issuing more
assignments than usual to prepare students for the real world. Some teachers and Professors,
however, do not realize the extremity of some of these assignments and projects. Most students,
especially highschool students, have a full schedule. These students are in school from about eight
in the morning to three in the afternoon. College can be just as bad. Even though most of the
students are now in class for about a third of the time, the school work is probably more than
doubled to that of a high school student. Many problems begin to occur at this stage in the life of the
student. Since the pressure is on more then ever, many adolescents take comfort in the company of
their friends. Friends during this time are extremely crucial for many reasons. The best being that

Schools across the nation need to take a more proactive step to prevent teen suicide by giving their
students and staff more of an education. For example the Ontario Shores Mental Health Science
wants schools to be more aware also; "Last week the Durham school boards announced a new
curriculum to teach teachers about mental illness in youth, funded by the Ontario Shores Centre for
Mental Health Sciences in Whitby." ( Scallan and Chantaie). A town in Ontario brought this issue of
teen suicide up to the school board. The school board took a look at it and made a new course for

already do, they will be able to give the right information and know what to look out for. In
addition, there are many factors that could make a student more at risk of having any suicidal
actions. The Centers for disease Control and Prevention stated a list of many elements to look for ,
"Risk factors: History of previous suicide attempts, Family history of suicide, History of depression

of the family in teenagers' lives that is causing suicide rates to increase?
Or is it because the increase of gun availability? In 2/3 teen suicides guns were used. Or is it
because in today's world there is more pressure to go to school and get good grades and be
successful? There is no final answer for why the rate of teen suicide has tripled since 1950. You
can't pinpoint why teenagers now are deciding to commit suicide at a larger rate then in 1950. You
can only speculate why but to know why the rate has increased you have to know who are the teens
that are committing suicide?
Who are the teens that are committing suicide? The majority of suicidal teens are said to be the
teens with family history of suicide, mental illnesses, low self–esteem, abuse drugs and alcohol, are

Many people may begin to do more dangerous acts, like reckless driving or minor acts like not

Teenage suicide is a major issue in today's society; suicide is the intentional taking of one's own life
and is a momentous issue that should be addressed as quickly as possible. Teen suicide has been the
topic of numerous news headlines; yet, it still continues to have a detrimental effect on today's
youth. In the United States, suicide is currently the eighth leading cause of death for Americans,
and for young adults between the ages of 15 and 24, suicide is the third leading cause of death. This
is extremely startling due to the fact that teen suicide is one of the most preventable forms of death.

It is apparent that bullying has become a serious problem in today's society. It affects people of
all ages, and the results of bullying can be disastrous and devastating; suicide is just one of many
examples of a consequence of bullying. We need to all come together and think of a plan that can
help stop bullying. People don't understand how terrible it feels to get bullied until it happens to
them. We are the ones doing the bullying, whether it's directly or indirectly, so it is up to us to put
an end to it. As previously shown, there are quite a number of myths surrounding the topic of
teenage suicide; when the myths are addressed and made clear, it is easier for people to get a
better understanding of teen suicide and how to deal with it. Many people have come to believe
that you cannot tell when someone is contemplating suicide. They also usually believe that suicide
cannot be prevented and assume that every person that commits or has contemplated committing
suicide was suffering from some form of depression. I know that I was one of these people before
I began researching the topic of teenage suicide. These are common beliefs that are easy to accept
as true; however, just because they are common beliefs, it does not mean they are necessarily correct.
People contemplating suicide usually always show warning signs of what they are planning. They
typically give some type of warning that they are going to commit suicide before they

How Does Depression Affect Teens

descriptions of how Cait Irwin, who suffered from depression as a teenager, described it. They show

Adding these numbers together will show that one–fourth of teens questioned in this survey had
experienced depression–like symptoms by age 18. Also, two million, about one in ten, adolescents
aged twelve to seventeen had a major depressive episode in the past year ("Major Depressive
Episode and Treatment Among Adolescents: 2009"). These facts verify that depression in teenagers
is considerably common, and awareness of the signs of depression in young people needs to be
raised. Everyone needs to recognize signs and symptoms of depression in teenagers since many
teenagers with depression may not even recognize the signs themselves.
In addition, because of how serious depression in teenagers can be, adults or other teenagers need to
know how to recognize teenage depression to prevent it from getting worse. "People with depressive
illnesses do not all experience the same symptoms. The severity, frequency, and duration of
symptoms vary depending on the individual" ("National Institute of Mental Health"). Symptoms of
depression may include: vague, nonspecific physical complaints such as muscle aches, headaches,
stomachaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment, overeating or
appetite loss, persistent sad or irritable mood, loss of interest in activities or hobbies once enjoyed,
outbursts of shouting, complaining, or crying, lack of interest in socializing with friends, absences
from school or poor performance

Essay about Teen Suicide
In today's society, teenagers are faced with problems on a daily basis. When they are unable to deal
with those daily hassles, serious problems can develop within the teen that can ultimately lead to
resulting effects including depression or even suicide. Suicide in teens is one of the most traumatic
and problematic issues that we face today in not only adults but many adolescents as well. Today
suicide is one of the top causes for death in teenagers, out shadowed only by homicides and
accidents. Some of the top "accidents" include drug overdoses, single–car accidents, self–inflicted
gunshot wounds, falls from bridges and buildings, and self–poisonings. Some youth suicide analysts

That change to the though process is called a "mental block" (Schleifer 29). When faced with a
mental block the teen feels as if all hope is lost. Certain individuals who are very emotional and
have difficulty dealing with stress are referred to by researchers as being in a state of emotional
dysregulation. Emotional dysregulation has been associated with child abuse and other traumatic
experiences (Lezine 61).
Noticeable physical effects of a suicidal person include abuse of drugs or alcohol. Abusing drugs
affects the chemical balance in the brain and strengthens the feelings of loneliness and sadness.
Once or if the teen decides to stop using drugs or alcohol as a solution to their problem a new
complication arises. Withdrawal from drugs or alcohol also intensifies the feeling of being
hopelessness (Teen Drug Abuse). Another physical difference in a suicidal teenager is the brain
itself. Researchers have studied the relationship between serotonin levels in the brain and the chance
of suicide in an individual. "The researchers found that the suicide victims' brains contained fewer
release sites for serotonin and more sites to receive serotonin than did the brains of normal subjects.
This research strengthens the theory that the serotonin system is related to self–murder" (Francis 25).

Sure, it is a time of large possibility, but it also can be a period of stress and worry. There is
pressure to fit in socially, to perform academically, and to act responsibly. Adolescence is also a
time of sexual identity and relationships and a need for independence that often conflicts with
rules set by others. Young people with mental health problems, such as anxiety, depression,
bipolar disorder, or insomnia, are at higher risk for suicidal thoughts. Teens going through life

victims of bullying are at greater risk of suicidal thoughts. Some factors that increase the risk of
suicide are feelings of distress, irritability, or agitation, feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness,

percent of teens who commit suicide have one or more factors in their history. While young people
are powerless to control the varied circumstances of their birth, plenty of them have two traits in

An average of 276,000 youngsters between the ages 15–25 years tries to kill themselves every year;
5000 succeed. The most common causes? Stress, bullying, failed relationships, abuse, and failures at

sometimes, teenagers feel like they can't be understood or accepted, that they don't have an adult or
close friend to consult to. Teenage suicide is truly sad, to even think that someone feels the absolute

counseling. In the end, there is only so much we can do. There will always be bullying and there
will always be those people who feel suicide is the only to escape. However, it doesn't mean we
can't do anything. People can start more organizations to promote awareness, schools can get much
stricter about bullying and mean acts, and kindness should be promoted. Students who have
seriously thought or have attempted suicide should be provided with a physiatrist or counselor free
of charge if they can't afford one, and parents should pay more attention to their children's
activities. Students should be taught to be more open and accepting, and encouraged to make
friends rather than enemies. This will reduce any aggressive feelings between people, and
hopefully reduce the chances of someone even thinking about suicide. Realistically, suicide is one

frequently. They may start to keep to themselves more often and become more quiet around other
people. People need to start paying more attention to others and try to see if there are any signs of
depression. By noticing if a friend is showing personality changes, or becoming more depressed, it
is much easier to get help in the early stages of depression, rather than the end.
Suicide is the answer to some people when they may fear the future. Anger can be another cause
or feeling that something might be his or her own fault (Schleifer 31). Some other motives for
suicide may include doing badly in school, divorcing parents, experiencing violence at home, being
rejected by friends or losing a loved one (Marcovitz 49). When it comes to suicide, depression is
probably the greatest factor. Depression is related to two–thirds of all suicides today (Suicide and its
Prevention 2). Although depression is not permanent, it can last for some time if it is not treated.
Depression can last for as long as someone allows it to. "When the depression lifts, the teen

Youth Suicide Statistics prp.jasonfoundation.com/facts/youth–suicide–statistics/ Center for Disease
Control – cdc.gov [online] Our teens opt for suicide for various reasons, among such reasons are;
rejection, disappointments, guilt, shame, loneliness and feeling of hopelessness. The American
Psychological Association stated that more than 90% of people who commit suicide have the
following risk factors: (1) Family violence (2) Aggressive behavior (3) low self–esteem (4)
Abuse–mental, physical, and or sexual (5) Alcohol and /or other substance abuse (6) Sexual

Recognizing risk factors that's overlooked or camouflaged in silent cries for help is crucial. There
are so many people who are unaware of the signs. Likewise, there are others who know but simply
do not care to act; perhaps they are uncaring because the teen wasn't anyone they knew or loved, or
it's because suicide is so horrific that it is easier to ignore it. My question to that group is, if it was
your child, or relative how would you feel, that others did nothing, felt nothing and recognized
nothing? According to the Youth Suicide Statistics /Jason

Teenager Suicides: A National Issue Romeo and Juliet is a story of rival families, love at first sight,
and tragedy. In the end, star–crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet, commit suicide to stay together. Even
though, this story takes place centuries ago, lots of teenagers today end their lives at their own
hands. An article states that, ВЁSuicide is the third leading cause of death in 15 to 24 year oldsВЁ
(Teen Suicide). Teen suicide is showing itself as a national problem. In this paper we will analyze
how lack of communication, depression, and undesirable life events or recent losses answers why
teen suicides are a national issue. One reason teenage suicide is a national issue is due to a lack of
communication. An article states that teenagers find suicide a solution to adolescent problems and
family problems. ВЁFor some teenagers, normal developmental changes, when compounded by
other events or changes in their families, such as divorce or moving to a new community, changes
in friendships, difficulties in school, or other losses, can be very upsetting and can become
overwhelming. Problems may appear too difficult or embarrassing to overcome. For some, suicide
may seem like a solutionВЁ( Teen Suicide). In many news reports I have watched about teen
suicide (cyberbullying), they did not try to communicate with adults or parents to resolve the
problem. ВЁA lightning before death: O, how may I Call this a lightning? O my love! my wife!... O

Teenage experiences differ across individuals whereby some enjoy admiration while others feel rejected. The adverse behaviors result in significant concerns among the adolescents as some commit suicide while others just consider it. Crepeau–Hobson states that suicide has been listed as the third cause of death among youths between the ages of 10–24 (810). He further adds that a large percentage of the adolescents have also been reported to have contemplated or attempted to take their own lives. In the United States, addressing the issue of suicide has been made an urgent priority by the national government because besides it raising the mortality rate in the country, it contributes to increased hospitalization (Pena et al. 29). Teenage suicide should be prevented by substance abuse treatment and violence prevention, parental involvement, and implementation of suicide risk assessment procedures in educational institutions. One of the common behaviors among the adolescents is their desire to try out new things. The young adults who are already involved in drug abuse mislead the young generation that such practices are considered cool. The innocent children end up indulging in various substances such as alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and with time they graduate to hard drugs like heroin and cocaine. The home to adolescents is a place of comfort, if something is wrong at school, then home is where they can forget about it. But if there is violence occurring at the home, then children will not want to go there. This is the start of the buildup of pressure. Teenagers feel the pressure of maintaining good grades during school. If the adolescent is doing poorly in school, then he or she will feel the pressure to succeed and to do better in school work. Stress is a basis for most of the problems teenagers will encounter during high school and college. School work can be overwhelming especially for young adults. Schools are now issuing more assignments than usual to prepare students for the real world. Some teachers and Professors, however, do not realize the extremity of some of these assignments and projects. Most students, especially highschool students, have a full schedule. These students are in school from about eight in the morning to three in the afternoon. College can be just as bad. Even though most of the students are now in class for about a third of the time, the school work is probably more than doubled to that of a high school student. Many problems begin to occur at this stage in the life of the student. Since the pressure is on more then ever, many adolescents take comfort in the company of their friends. The bottom line is, suicide among teens is not a rare event, and it may be preventable with the proper treatment. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15 to 24...show more content... In their depression, they often dwell on what they feel is their unlucky and helpless lot in life, repeatedly leading them to believe that their situation is hopeless. FACT: Few suicides happen without some kind of warning. Most teenagers who have attempted or committed suicide will leave several hints and warning signs along the way. They will say or do things to let others know they are in trouble and thinking about dying. A more common occurrence is the young person frequently talking about death or that no one would miss them if they were gone. Some even give away personal belongings. Few will keep their intent to die an absolute secret from everyone, and some even tell friends about their plans (Nelson & Galas 25). Many people may begin to do more dangerous acts, like reckless driving or minor acts like not wearing a seatbelt in a car, when they are feeling suicidal (http://www.harthosp.org/HealthInfo /scripts/scr0341.htm). After all, an accident will only make dying easier. Deep down teens are scared to die. They may come to the point where they do not care if they die, but most fear it the minute they come close to touching it, especially if they are the ones doing it themselves. Besides the suicides mistakenly labeled as "accidents", many suicides go unreported. It is painful for families to admit that their children have committed suicide (Nelson & Galas 24). • 13. Teen Suicide Research Essay Teenage suicide is a major issue in today's society; suicide is the intentional taking of one's own life and is a momentous issue that should be addressed as quickly as possible. Teen suicide has been the topic of numerous news headlines; yet, it still continues to have a detrimental effect on today's youth. In the United States, suicide is currently the eighth leading cause of death for Americans, and for young adults between the ages of 15 and 24, suicide is the third leading cause of death. This is extremely startling due to the fact that teen suicide is one of the most preventable forms of death. There are quite a number of allegories and misguided common beliefs that surround the subject of teenage suicide. An example is that people...show more content... It is apparent that bullying has become a serious problem in today's society. It affects people of all ages, and the results of bullying can be disastrous and devastating; suicide is just one of many examples of a consequence of bullying. We need to all come together and think of a plan that can help stop bullying. People don't understand how terrible it feels to get bullied until it happens to them. We are the ones doing the bullying, whether it's directly or indirectly, so it is up to us to put an end to it. As previously shown, there are quite a number of myths surrounding the topic of teenage suicide; when the myths are addressed and made clear, it is easier for people to get a better understanding of teen suicide and how to deal with it. Many people have come to believe that you cannot tell when someone is contemplating suicide. They also usually believe that suicide cannot be prevented and assume that every person that commits or has contemplated committing suicide was suffering from some form of depression. I know that I was one of these people before I began researching the topic of teenage suicide. These are common beliefs that are easy to accept as true; however, just because they are common beliefs, it does not mean they are necessarily correct. People contemplating suicide usually always show warning signs of what they are planning. They typically give some type of warning that they are going to commit suicide before they Get more content on HelpWriting.net

A crushing sense of hopelessness that was unlike anything I had ever experienced before." "It was as if something else had seized control of my mind." "The darkness was spreading inside me like a cancer (Irwin 1+). – These are descriptions of how Cait Irwin, who suffered from depression as a teenager, described it. They show how awful and frightening depression during the teenage years can be. Depression and suicide are closely linked. Adding these numbers together will show that one–fourth of teens questioned in this survey had experienced depression–like symptoms by age 18. Also, two million, about one in ten, adolescents aged twelve to seventeen had a major depressive episode in the past year ("Major Depressive Episode and Treatment Among Adolescents: 2009"). These facts verify that depression in teenagers is considerably common, and awareness of the signs of depression in young people needs to be raised. Everyone needs to recognize signs and symptoms of depression in teenagers since many teenagers with depression may not even recognize the signs themselves. In addition, because of how serious depression in teenagers can be, adults or other teenagers need to know how to recognize teenage depression to prevent it from getting worse. "People with depressive illnesses do not all experience the same symptoms. The severity, frequency, and duration of symptoms vary depending on the individual" ("National Institute of Mental Health"). Symptoms of depression may include: vague, nonspecific physical complaints such as muscle aches, headaches, stomachaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment, overeating or appetite loss, persistent sad or irritable mood, loss of interest in activities or hobbies once enjoyed, outbursts of shouting, complaining, or crying, lack of interest in socializing with friends, absences from school or poor performance Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Essay about Teen Suicide In today's society, teenagers are faced with problems on a daily basis. When they are unable to deal with those daily hassles, serious problems can develop within the teen that can ultimately lead to resulting effects including depression or even suicide. Suicide in teens is one of the most traumatic and problematic issues that we face today in not only adults but many adolescents as well. Today suicide is one of the top causes for death in teenagers, out shadowed only by homicides and accidents. Some of the top "accidents" include drug overdoses, single–car accidents, self–inflicted gunshot wounds, falls from bridges and buildings, and self–poisonings. Some youth suicide analysts believe that these were not accidents at all, but were...show more content... That change to the though process is called a "mental block" (Schleifer 29). When faced with a mental block the teen feels as if all hope is lost. Certain individuals who are very emotional and have difficulty dealing with stress are referred to by researchers as being in a state of emotional dysregulation. Emotional dysregulation has been associated with child abuse and other traumatic experiences (Lezine 61). Noticeable physical effects of a suicidal person include abuse of drugs or alcohol. Abusing drugs affects the chemical balance in the brain and strengthens the feelings of loneliness and sadness. Once or if the teen decides to stop using drugs or alcohol as a solution to their problem a new complication arises. Withdrawal from drugs or alcohol also intensifies the feeling of being hopelessness (Teen Drug Abuse). Another physical difference in a suicidal teenager is the brain itself. Researchers have studied the relationship between serotonin levels in the brain and the chance of suicide in an individual. "The researchers found that the suicide victims' brains contained fewer release sites for serotonin and more sites to receive serotonin than did the brains of normal subjects. This research strengthens the theory that the serotonin system is related to self–murder" (Francis 25). The social effects on suicide have a Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Many teens have a story similar to this where they fear being a outcast and being made fun of by their peers, or having a wrecked social life(Inside Suicide, 5). Suicide is highly preventable for teens by anyone close to them, but early detection is key. We all know a teenager whether their a friend or family member, but what we don't know is what goes on in their heads prior to their suicide. Suicide is a tricky thing to prevent because you don't know whether it's a mood swing or the real deal. There are clear warning signs that give you a hint that the teen is suicidal. They usually talk about death and have wish to die. Although it may seem as if a teen always says "I'm going to kill myself!", this is just an example of anxiety. Another sign is a social life that encounters a downfall as well as a problem that gives them a bad image of themselves. They let themselves go on the outside (appearance) and also on the inside. Large numbers of teens that do not have support from friends, peer groups, family, or religious association may and can feel isolated from the world and disconnected. (Larry's). The tragedy of a young person dying as a result of overwhelming hopelessness is devastating to everyone. Suicide rates differ between boys and girls. Girls think about and attempt suicide about twice as often as boys, and attempt suicide by overdosing. Boys die by suicide about four times as often as girls, due to using more lethal methods, such as firearms, hanging, or jumping from heights. (Nock). Sure, it is a time of large possibility, but it also can be a period of stress and worry. There is pressure to fit in socially, to perform academically, and to act responsibly. Adolescence is also a time of sexual identity and relationships and a need for independence that often conflicts with rules set by others. Young people with mental health problems, such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, or insomnia, are at higher risk for suicidal thoughts. Teens going through life changes (parent's divorce, moving, a parent leaving home, financial changes) and those who are victims of bullying are at greater risk of suicidal thoughts. Some factors that increase the risk of suicide are feelings of distress, irritability, or agitation, feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness, or even emotional, physical, or sexual abuse. (Nock). Birth factors may offer some clues. 60 percent of teens who commit suicide have one or more factors in their history. While young people are powerless to control the varied circumstances of their birth, plenty of them have two traits in common; they want action right now, and they have trouble seeing into the future. Stress, bullying, failed relationships, abuse, and failures at studies. Teenage suicide is wrong, it indicates how ruthless today's society is, and it proves that sometimes, teenagers feel like they can't be understood or accepted, that they don't have an adult or close friend to consult to. Mrs. Lane ended up moving to a new home, and she is currently working with a non–profit organization called "Forever 4 Change". This organization promotes suicide awareness and counseling. In the end, there is only so much we can do. There will always be bullying and there will always be those people who feel suicide is the only to escape. However, it doesn't mean we can't do anything. People can start more organizations to promote awareness, schools can get much stricter about bullying and mean acts, and kindness should be promoted. Students who have seriously thought or have attempted suicide should be provided with a physiatrist or counselor free of charge if they can't afford one, and parents should pay more attention to their children's activities. Students should be taught to be more open and accepting, and encouraged to make friends rather than enemies. This will reduce any aggressive feelings between people, and hopefully reduce the chances of someone even thinking about suicide. Realistically, suicide is one in 5 of the leading deaths for teens. Awareness is not nearly as high as it should be and if more stories are shared, then it may prevent other tragic stories from Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The thought of one ending his or her life is developing in the minds of teenagers around the globe. "To kill oneself as a means of escape from poverty or disappointed love, or bodily or mental anguish, is the deed of coward rather than a brave man, because to run away from trouble is a form of cowardice. While it is true that the suicide braves death, he does it not for some noble object but to escape some ill" (Marcovitz 17). By noticing if a friend is showing personality changes, or becoming more depressed, it is much easier to get help in the early stages of depression, rather than the end. Suicide is the answer to some people when they may fear the future. Anger can be another cause or feeling that something might be his or her own fault (Schleifer 31). Some other motives for suicide may include doing badly in school, divorcing parents, experiencing violence at home, being rejected by friends or losing a loved one (Marcovitz 49). When it comes to suicide, depression is probably the greatest factor. Depression is related to two–thirds of all suicides today (Suicide and its Prevention 2). Although depression is not permanent, it can last for some time if it is not treated. Depression can last for as long as someone allows it to.
