10. Cut two identical pieces because you will need a front and a back.

11. Cut out all the negative spaces. Using 1.5” or 2” wide strips, create spacers that fit exactly around the edges of the negative spaces. Tape them securely into place. Since this is the inside, the tape will not be seen. Good craftsmanship will prevent unsightly gaps in the piece.

13. Once the negative spaces have had the spacer walls built around them, you will start to build a wall around the outer edge of the piece. You will run a thin line of glue and let it set up for about one minute. This will help the glue work better than if you use really wet glue. Make sure you use the same width strips you used for your negative spaces. (All 1.5” or all 2”) You will have to hold the strip into place until it feels like the glue is holding. You will have to be patient and work carefully. Good craftsmanship is the key to doing a good project.

14. Here you see a student carefully holding the outer edge in place until the glue feels like it is holding. Remember, it is important to wait at least one minute after applying glue before adding pieces. The glue should be tacky (sticky) and not wet.

18. The next to last assembly step is to run a thin line of glue along the top of all spacers and the outer wall. This needs to be done all at once because then you set your top onto the piece.

20. The decorative part of the project begins with a coat of gesso to prepare the chipboard for painting just like you would with a canvas.

25. If you have access to a computer with a paint program like Photoshop Elements, you can play around with your design even before you add one drop of paint. The computer is an excellent tool for design experimentation.
