- 3. IS IT ANY GOOD? SOURCES ARE “GOOD” WHEN: • They are appropriate to the assignment or research project • They are carefully evaluated and chosen using guidelines such as CRAAP* or RADCAB* • The researcher integrates them into their paper or research project according to professional standards • The researcher cites them professionally and ethically CRAAP = Currency, Relevance, Accuracy, Authoritative, Purpose RADCAB = Relevancy, Appropriateness, Detail, Currency, Authority, Bias
- 4. HOW TO ACCESS THE ARTICLE YOU FOUND FROM EMAIL 1. Open your email 2. Do a quick scan of the record to make sure it still looks appropriate 3. Find the durable (or persistent, or permanent) link 4. Follow the link to the article record or the full text 5. Use Find it @ WVU to get to the full text if necessary
- 5. Assignment Checklist: • I need something from a popular magazine or trade journal • I need an article, not a book • I need a recent publication • I prefer full text
- 6. APPLYING CRAAP TO EVALUATE THE ARTICLE Currency—When was the source published? Does the article reflect current events or research? Or is it outdated? Relevance—Does the source directly address your research question or topic? Accuracy—Does the article report accurate information? Does it use accepted research methods to report and analyze data? Authority-- Does the article use named or sources that can be looked up or otherwise verified? Is the author affiliated with a publication or place of employment that is recognized as being reliable? Purpose—Consider the article’s purpose—what is it trying to say to its audience and why? Does your research question make you part of that audience?
- 7. APPLYING CRAAP TO EVALUATE THE ARTICLE Currency—Spring 2012 Relevance—The assignment is to write up a company profile Accuracy—An earlier article in The Economist has similar information. The research was conducted in the field and includes in-person interviews. Other information available at http://www.ikeafans.com/ikea/ikea-corporate/ikea-corporate- structure.html, a popular site about Ikea. Authority-- Gives detailed information about where it investigated and lists sources. Purpose—The article’s stated purpose is to discover more about the company’s financial structure. * *I’m not sure it does discover more than was known about the overall structure, but it uncovers some devilish details.
