The Iliad by HomerIn connection to How to Read Literature Like a Professor Noel Rodriguez March 8, 2011 Period 1 Green
How to Read Literature Like a Professor Thomas C. Foster explains to us the importance of knowing the background info of what is being read when it comes to Greek literature. One must have the background knowledge to understand the characters, or more like gods, goddesses, warriors and so on when it comes to Greek literature. Having the knowledge of all that will help you develop a better understanding of what is going on in the plays, and poems.
How to Read Literature Like a Professor & The Iliad connection
How to Read Literature Like a Professor & The Iliad connection In How to Read Literature Like a Professor we were told that having an understanding of what is being read will help you understand more easily what is happening and help develop important things out of the books. In The Iliad, if you know what the role of all the gods, goddesses and warriors is, then you will be able to understand more. But not only do you have to know the people but also the geography of the place that the book takes place in. By knowing all this you will create a much more in depth understanding. For example in The Iliad, if you understand and have the background information that Foster explains is helpful, it will be much more accessible to create themes.
Themes in The Iliad
Possible themes in The Iliad By following what Foster says and having a bit more background knowledge of what is going on in your book, it is easier to develop themes because of the good understanding. For example in The Iliad by having the understanding of all the battles and wars, and people in them, it is easier to determine a theme for the book. One example of a theme for The Iliad would be that military had more value then there family life in that era. War or military was something very important back then. The majority of things were determined by battling things out, and people were always determined to come out on top when it came to battles. That’s an example of how understanding the geography or background of the place that your book is based off of helps come to a development of themes. All this connects to what Foster had said in his book of having better understanding of books. After finding the themes, it seems to be that many of the themes that you get from the past seem to connect to things that happen these days.
Connection to other books
Connection to the future In future readings it will be helpful to do what Foster has mentioned. By having understanding of the time era in which your book was written or having the background knowledge on the subject that your book is, it will be very helpful to create themes for your book. This can be done with any book, not just any specific kind of book. Not only will it be easier to create themes but you will have a much better understanding of your book, and be able to enjoy it more. In the future I will be trying to create some sort of background knowledge about what I am reading in order to make things much more understandable and easier to create themes.
