  6. Greenpeace is a master at using volunteers… in 5 years increased by 1.4 million supporters in 18 countries! They help you achieve your purpose… how do we achieve the purpose better and energise them? I’ve got 2 methods. One takes 1 step, the other one 5… so here’s the easier method:
  7. This is the method I’d suggest everyone who wants a quick fix. For the others, I’ve got the “not so easy method”  in 5 steps
  8. 1. What’s stopping you? What are the barriers you’re facing?
  9. 2. Who’s in your network? You’re looking for the champions…
  10. You might be surprised what you find when you start looking around!
  11. Then you might also have a kid like charlie simpson who at 7 raised £210,000 for haiti!!
  12. 3. What are their motivations?
  13. So what motivates people then?
  14. AIESEC size: 40,000 active members, 110 countries, >99% of volunteers and rotation of leadership = 1 year AIESEC Ahmadabad Consulting: refused paid jobs to volunteer for personal growth
  15. Management = 20th Century invention… like TV, doesn’t mean it’s gonna work for ever Traditional management = Great for compliance Engagement (what charities want!) => Self direction Few times a year > Tell engineers work on anything you want, as long as not regular job
  16. “Have to deliver over night” Autonomy over time, tasks and techniques At Google +/- half of all new products / services during that 20% time > Gmail, Google Ads, Orkut, Google News
