In dit onderzoek wordt het conflict, dat plaatsvindt op Wikipedia, tussen de Wikipediagemeenschap en de troll-gemeenschap uiteengezet. Het open karakter van Wikipedia is de aanleiding voor dit conflict aangezien iedereen kennis kan toevoegen, bewerken, bekritiseren en verwijderen van Wikipedia. De trolls voeren strijd om de doelen en idealen van de Wikipedia-gemeenschap aan te vallen, waarop de Wikipedia-gemeenschap tegenstand biedt door vandalisme op allerlei manieren van Wikipedia te verbannen. Gaandeweg wordt geprobeerd antwoord te geven op de vraag of dit conflict ook gezien kan worden als een vorm van spel.

- Wikipedia was founded in January 2001 as a project to produce a free internet encyclopedia.The founders are Larry Sanger & Jimmy Wales. Wikipedia has a non commercial nature. This is a pyramid to show the Dutch Wikipedia community, which is divided in registered users, active users, moderators and bureaucrats. The higher in the pyramid the more responsibilities and power the user get.
- Given the large user community of Wikipedia and the large amount of page’s rules seemed unavoidable. But strangely enough the first rule of wikipedia was ‘ignore all rules’. If a rule prevents you from improving or maintaining Wikipedia , ignore it . The rule was written by co-founder Larry Sanger and was signed by other co-founder Jimmy Wales.
- This is my research question. On one side you have the Wikipedia community that want to fight against vandalism on the other side you have the troll / vandal community that intentionally want to vandalize Wikipedia. Are this forms of play, and what rules do these ‘games’ have?
- An schematic overview of the ‘conflict’. This reflects the good/bad opposition within Wikipedia.
- The vandals of Wikipedia are often called Trolls, but trolling does not only happen on Wikipedia. The biggest online troll community is Encyclopædia Dramatica. This is a satirical open wiki built on MediaWiki software. They have a slogan that is: In Lulz we trust. Lulz is the act of entertaining oneself with the misfortune of others. They also give tips on vandalizing Wikipedia. Troll are almost the onlyones who indeed extremely ignore all rules on wikipedia
- In my opinion this is a good example of a humouristic vandal action. But Encyclopædia Dramatica is also infamous for the discriminating and pornographic content. Sometimes I was shocked by that I didn’t expected.
- This is how Encyclopædia Dramatica defines the game of Wikipedia. As you can read they explain it in a negative manner, they don’t have a lot of faith in the wikipedia community. I thought it was funny that they also made a point system for Wikipedia what is not actually there.
- One of the tasks of the moderators is to revert vandalism. Because there are 200 adjustments per minute it is impossible for the moderators to revert all vandalism. That’s why Wikipedia started to use bots. Bots are little computer programs that could take over human tasks, in this case reverting vandalism. The most famous ant-vandalism bot is Cluebot, which received lots of awards and is praised through the whole Wikipedia community.
- I did try to vandalize Wikipedia myself. I Changes the date of the Homo Ludens book, in the Dutch and English version of Wikipedia. This was a subtle adjustment.
- After four days my edit was reverted in the English version, but not noticed as vandalism. Maybe because the change I made was so little.
- In this example, my edit was more extreme. I added the sentence: Wikipedia is a game. My date change was at that time still not noticed in the Dutch version.
- Unfortunately this change became noticed within 2 minutes. But still no warning of vandalism.
- I asked myself, if there are anti-vandal bots are there also vandal bots? Because the troll community of Wikipedia is so anonymous and closed I became friends of the Encyclopædia Dramatica facebook page and asked my question there. It seemed that Wikipedia is very careful of approving bots so it is very difficult to program a vandal bots that can attack Wikipedia.
- The most famous vandal is Willy on Wheels, who vandalized Wikipedia a lot. He started in 2004 and he even managed to troll the main page of Wikipedia. He often added the words ...on wheels.. To article headlines. He managed to create a vandal bot that could move, edit and delete several page’s before a moderator noticed it. He sees vandalism as a competition, attempting to vandalize as many pages as possible before being banned.
- Bobby Boulders, also a famous troll, led the International Society of Vandal (ISV) in fight against Wikipedia. He also claimed that Willy on Wheels was a hoax created by the Wikipedian administrators.
- This is the only ‘open source’ vandal bot I could find. This ‘myveryownsock’ vandalbot is a browser side script for executing vandalism. And allows you to destroy hundreds of pages in a few minutes. Wikipedia had a very strict bot policy, if you want to run a bot on Wikipedia you must first get it approved by a group of wiki experts. Although Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia, there is the possibility to lock specific articles that are often vandalized.
- My conclusion is that the Wikipedia community and the trolls do not play the same game, don’t have the same goal, don’t share the same rules, do not own and use the same tools and do not have the same power. They play two different kind of games but I consider both as forms of play within the wikipedia world.
