- Introduction The TrainForTrade programme from the Human Resources Development Section (HRDS) develops skills and capacities by disseminating international trade-related knowledge. The ultimate goal is to increase developing countries' and economies in transition's participation in international trade in an equitable and sustainable manner. TrainForTrade ’ s work reflects the mandate on capacity building activities from it's the Doha Mandate (Paragraph 56 (r)). First bullet point the PowerPoint presentation: Promotes cross-divisional cooperation on technical assistance. In this way, TrainForTrade has proven to be instrumental in connecting UNCTAD research and analysis with sustainable capacity-building activities in developing countries and economies in transition. TrainForTrade has three main objectives: To enhance the capacities and skills of players in international trade To support capacity development of institutions involved in international trade To encourage development-oriented trade policy by providing support to governmental entities TrainForTrade ’ s knowledge management services are tailor-made to the needs of the beneficiaries. TrainForTrade has extensive consultation with beneficiaries already from the conceptual stage TrainForTrade emphasises the importance of developing local services for local people, by local people. TrainForTrade trains local experts in their countries to enable them to become trainers on trade-related issues. This creates local ownership to, and sustainability of, the capacity development process. The TrainForTrade programme develops high quality courses and maintains high standard delivery by using technological means such as e-learning, mobile-learning and cloud learning. In many developing countries handheld devices, such as cell phones and tablets, are more accessible than PCs. Hence mobile-learning can improve the accessibility to e-learning courses compared to using a PC. TrainForTrade promotes networking and South-South cooperation amongst beneficiary countries and training institutions because it is crucial for knowledge-sharing and multiplier effects of training.
- In 2011 TrainForTrade conducted: - 14 face-to-face and distance-learning courses and workshops, benefiting 911 trade operators, including 285 women. - 37 developing countries, including 10 least developed countries (LDCs). - 4 train-the-trainers courses organised for 94 trade operators from Africa, Asia and Latin America, who in turn delivered training courses - 264 trainees were trained by local trainers worldwide Donors We would like to express our gratitude to all the donors that have supported TrainForTrade including Spain, France and Ireland . Contributions has also been received from a number of developing countries including Benin, Cameroon, Djibouti, Gabon, Ghana, Guatemala, Guinea, Indonesia, Ireland, Malaysia, Namibia, Peru, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo . We are also thankful for the contribution of France and Norway to expert programmes.
- The Angola Project The TrainForTrade Angola Project ran from 2007 to 2011 and assisted the Angolan government in constructing a national framework for training and capacity development. The overall goal of the programme was to facilitate adequate changes in policy orientation related to international trade, investment and services, and thereby contribute to the economic growth and sustainable development in Angola. We are grateful for the generous funding provided by the European Commission. The Six Components in the Angola Programme: Modern Port Management Investment Trade Policy Consumer protection Climate Change Sustainable Tourism for development TrainForTrade organised 21 workshops on different trade-related aspects. This resulted in the training of over 700 government officials and managers from the private sector and from non-governmental organisations. The training activities also helped the Angolan government articulate Angola ’ s trade policies and integrate them into its national development strategy. UNCTAD/TrainForTrade published several publications in collaboration with international and national experts, including "The Legal Framework for Private Investment in Angola " and “ Sustainable Tourism Perspectives in Angola: the Region of Benguela ” . Moreover, UNCTAD/TrainForTrade drafted regulations for Angola ’ s Consumer Protection Law, which are under consideration by national authorities.
