WHO ARE WE?
My name is Kevin Parcell - I’m from the US.
I’m here networking resources to launch a pilot project
for our One Bicycle per Person global initiative.
1BpP is a new group - just begun in December - and
we’re based on the internet at Acumen Fund
Community, where we are building a global value web
of acumen to support using social enterprise to bring
bicycles to the base of the economic pyramid.
You can find links to our group and blog at 1bpp.net

PEOPLE POWER STATIONS
My particular focus with this 1BpP pilot project is my own social enterprise,
called People Power Stations, which is serving as a template for how our
group will help other bicycle-centered social enterprises.
People Power Stations will pay people to pedal bicycles to generate electricity,
pump water, thrash maze, and any other pedal-powered applications suited to
their particular community.
We let the workers accept their pay in either national currency or our own local
currency, or both.
We give a discount on water, electricity, bicycles, etc, when purchased with our
local currency.
In this way we create a demand for the local currency that will *build local
marketplaces founded on delivering money and essential commodities
to the poor.*
Using bicycles, local money, and the water and electricity we produce, these
marketplaces will expand to include agriculture, sanitation, ICT centers to
facilitate libraries, schools, and diagnostic centers, and many other vital
services.

BICYCLES TRANSFORM LIVES
AND NATIONS
We’ve had the wheel for more than 5000 years, about the same amount of time we’ve
had money, but most people who have both wheels and money still don’t understand
that these two tools are key to ending extreme poverty for the other 60% of
humanity. Instead, most people believe that lack of money and transportation is the
definition of poverty, when in fact it is the cause because healthy marketplaces need
cash and affordable personal transportation to function.
For example, half the world’s one billion bicycles are in China today, but just 20
years ago, bicycles were no more common in China than in India. China used
bicycles to transform itself into an economic superpower in just one generation. Can
you imagine China’s success without bicycles? 1BpP wants to see that success
duplicated in India and everywhere.
