Need for Urgent Change in American Education Veronica Nicole Amason University of Houston-Victoria
We need to reexamine our role in the education of our students
Teachers must move from a culture of isolation…
…to a culture of collaboration
We must do this to prepare our students to be competitive in a global market
Do we really need to change?
Let’s examine our current progress
At CHS, we have commendable TAKS scores. Math 80% Science 82% Social Studies 92% ELA 92% The results show a gain of 16% overall.
However, we are measuringour success using a state instrument mandated by TEA
How do our students compare to others in our nation?
NAEP Test The percentage of students in Texas who performed at or above the NAEP Basiclevel was 73 percent in 2009. The percentage of students in Texas who performed at or above the NAEP Proficientlevel was 27 percent in 2009. http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/pdf/stt2009/2010460TX8.pdf
The percentage of fourth graders in the nation scoring at or above Proficientin 2009 was 33%. http://nces.ed.gov/fastfacts/
In 2009, the average score in Texas was lower than those in 32 states/jurisdictions . http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/pdf/stt2009/2010460TX8.pdf
Equity in Education? In 2009, Black students had an average score that was 25 points lower than that of White students. In 2009, Hispanic students had an average score that was 22 points lower than that of White students. In 2009, students who were eligible for free/reduced-price school lunch, an indicator of low income, had an average score that was 23 points lower than that of students who were not eligible for free/reduced-price school lunch. http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/pdf/stt2009/2010460TX8.pdf
These performance gaps were not significantly different from those in 1998! There is a need for change! http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/pdf/stt2009/2010460TX8.pdf
How Do Our High School Students Compare With Others in the Nation?
SAT Scores Texas is #49 in verbal SAT scores in the nation (493) and #46 in average math SAT scores (502). http://www.window.state.tx.us/comptrol/wwstand/wws0512ed/
Texas is #36 in the nation in high school graduation rates (68%). http://www.window.state.tx.us/comptrol/wwstand/wws0512ed/
Texas is #50 in the nation with the percentage of Texans with a high school diploma (Only 78.3 percent of Texans 25 years of age and older had a high school diploma in 2004) http://www.window.state.tx.us/comptrol/wwstand/wws0512ed/
Are We Pushing Our Students to Achieve? The percentage of graduates taking one calculus level course is 16% The percentage of graduates taking one advanced science course is 18% http://nationsreportcard.gov/reading_2009/
Out of Texas’ 145 public and private higher education institutions, only one private institution, Rice University, ranked among the nation’s top 50. http://www.window.state.tx.us/comptrol/wwstand/wws0512ed/
Texas is #35 with the percentage of population 25 years or older with a bachelor’s degree or higher in 2004 (24.5%) http://www.window.state.tx.us/comptrol/wwstand/wws0512ed/
We Are Not Showing Growth The average prose and document literacy scores of U.S. adults were not measurably different in 2003 from 1992. The average prose and document literacy scores of 16-18 year olds decreased 3% in 2003 from 1992. http://nationsreportcard.gov/reading_2009/
How do compare Globally?  THE WORLD'S BEST AND WORST IN 8TH-GRADE MATH Percentage of U.S. eighth-graders testing at or above proficient in math in our highest ranking state: 51% Massachusetts Countries that did better on a comparable test: Singapore 73% Hong Kong 66% Korea 65% Taiwan 61% Japan 57% http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2007-11-13-student-study_N.htm
Results from a 2003 Adult Literacy and Life skills study showed that U.S. adults were outperformed by adults in Norway, Bermuda, Canada, and Switzerland, or 4 of the 5 countries participating. http://nationsreportcard.gov/reading_2009/
In China, students take physics, chemistry, and biology every year in high school. http://www.foundationsofphysicalscience.org
Students go to school at about 6 in the morning and return at about 6 in the afternoon. Then, they eat dinner and go back to school until about 10 at night. This adds up to about 14 to 15 hours of school and constant studying. http://www.foundationsofphysicalscience.org
US has lower HS graduation rates than other developed nations along with a greater penalty for not graduating lower university completion rates greater financial incentive to graduate college. http://academicbiz.typepad.com/piloted/2007/10/us-education-co.html
Our Poverty Rates are Climbing http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/
While The Poverty Gap Widens In the United States, the richest 10 percent earn an average of$93,000 The poorest 10% earn an average of $5,800 http://streetsideinvestor.com/index.php/2008/10/21/gap-growing-among-the-rich-and-poor/
We need to reculture our school in order to and raise the bar for our students.
We must reshape our vision of leadership
By empowering teachers to become instructional leaders.
PLCs Professional Learning Communities work together to create a shared vision of student expectations
PLCs Teachers work together to align curriculum, instruction and assessment to ensure the relevancy and rigor will prepare our students to be competitive in a global market.
PLCs will be the driving force to address the urgent need for change in education.
