This document provides an overview of a training for educators on the use of Classroom Diagnostic Tools (CDTs). The training is facilitated by Jimmy Strand and Nick Paolini and aims to provide information about the CDTs and a plan for successful implementation. The Pennsylvania Classroom Diagnostic Tools (CDT), a
computer adaptive test (CAT), is a set of online tools
designed to provide diagnostic information in order to
guide instruction and provide support for students and
teachers. These tools (available at no cost to districts) are
fully integrated and aligned with the Standards Aligned
System (SAS) and will assist educators in identifying
students’ academic strengths and areas of need, providing
links to classroom resources.

How Scale Scores are Derived?
• Students’ scores are converted into scale scores rather than
points correct or raw scores
• Scales scores are transformed raw scores that allow for valid
comparisons across students, grades, and administrations, but
only within the same subject
• Scales scores take into consideration that fact that some
questions on the test are more difficult than others
• CDT Minimum scale score of 200
• CDT Maximum scale score of 2000
• The CDT scale scores do not correspond to PSSA and Keystone
Exams and should not be compared.

Discuss their role in transformational leadership and their role in growing background knowledge to support teachers’ professional development, use of the CDT, target population, analysis of results, and instructional support to lessen gaps and/or to promote enriching the strengths.

Distribute the CDT Professional Development Modules handout to the participants. Slides from this presentation can be found in the Modules. Each of the topics covered here are addressed in more detail in these Modules.

This slide will help to “build some background” preliminarily on using the CDT to support the variety of students within our classrooms.
As your participants begin for the day, have this slide posted on the big screen. This will give them some words to reflect upon. Emphasize the bottom quote on the slide! Obviously, the focus is on the students. After participants are settled, conduct a think-pair-share for participants to discuss their “golden phrase” they choose from Pulling Together, 2009. Have a few tables share out with the entire group.
A few added words from Horacio Sanchez in A Brain-Based Approach to Closing the Achievement Gap, 2008, states, “There exist portions of the student population that can be negatively impacted by the mere act of being taught something new. That is why teachers must become more adept at introducing the more challenging materials in the context of information that these students already know and are comfortable with. In order to accomplish this, teachers must take the time to find out what students know, spend time doing, and feel that they are good at. Environments that allow the unhealthiest students to thrive are actually the same environments that allow for optimal achievement by all students.”
When a teacher can look and understand a student profile through the results of the CDTs, less frustration, poor academic performance, and negative behaviors will be lowered from the student as the teacher and the student can have the opportunity to conference on specific goals and allow for students to see the results of their work. A teacher will need to take the time to provide one-to-one student conferencing utilizing the CDT results; if not, the results will be just another piece of unused data.
Through the use of the CDTs for 3rd to 12th grade students, teachers can create a highly routine and nurturing environment. Not all children, in fact only 10% of the student population, according to Sanchez, has easy temperament for change, challenge, and less structure; therefore, teachers can better support the majority of our students, by creating a climate and culture within the classroom that will lead to improved test scores and lower behavioral incidents through genuine teacher-student communication and setting goals.

Will there be a tool for grades K–5?
The initial plan was for the CDT to be aligned with the Keystone exams, assuring teachers have information about students’ strengths and needs before they encounter the Keystones. Felt grade six was a good place to start with content that reaches down to grade three. Budget was part of the decision, but mostly to be sure started with content several grade levels before Keystones are used. PSSA reporting categories, too, was added since we test at those grades (6–8), but the initial plan was to link to the Keystones. Additional funds have been allocated to expand the system to grade 3 through 5. Fall of 2013 will field test, and will then become operational in spring of 2014.
Where can you find the CDT?
The CDT is fully integrated within SAS. The CDT can be found on eDIRECT. Under Assessments in the SAS site, CDT, a hyperlink for eDIRECT is posted.
Where is eDIRECT located?
The eDIRECT site is a public site: https://pa.drcedirect.com. Found on this site is a wealth of general information regarding CDT.
How can I set up classes and view reports?
Use eDIRECT for setting up classes and viewing reports requires a secure log-in.

The CDT User Guide is available publicly in eDirect. Go to GENERAL INFORMATION and choose Documents. Select the 2011/2012 Classroom Diagnostic Tools Administration and Manuals for Document Type. Click on Show Documents – you will see the “2011-2012 CDT User Guide.”

The CDT is a diagnostic assessment tool within the Assessment Circle of the SAS architecture which impacts the interconnectedness of all the circles. The heart of the architecture is what our work is all about: Student Achievement.

Assessments play an important role in the school improvement process. Even with clear goals, teachers cannot improve their practice unless they have access to a steady flow of information about the effectiveness of their teaching. As teachers engage in continual assessment of their students’ learning, they will gradually develop understandings of how students learn from classroom instruction, and they will begin to perceive direct links between the goals they set, their own teaching, and their students’ learning.
Teachers are in a position to improve their students’ lessons with the use of Classroom Diagnostic Tools (CDT). This may be a change of practice, but teachers are in a position to make positive changes to help all students–individually or in small groups. (from The Teaching Gap by Stigler and Hiebert)
The CDT has potential to enhance formative assessment efforts 6–12, grades 3-5 - field test for fall 2013 and operational spring 2014, using the CDT to focus on their student needs relative to learning progressions, group students according to needs, provide more intensive supports as warranted, and assess learning in the moment to alter instruction (formative assessments based upon differentiated instructional efforts).
This is a Pennsylvania standards-aligned classroom diagnostic assessment measure that strengthens the continuum of assessment.
Other diagnostic assessments include GMADE, GRADE, Teacher-created lessons, and lessons from the math program or resources being used in their district/classroom.

Ask the audience to brainstorm similarities and differences between benchmark assessments and diagnostic tools. As a suggestion, you may want to enlarge this slide as a poster and use Post-it Notes for writing examples. Otherwise, proceed to the next slide and complete the activity.

This activity is to build background knowledge. As the training progresses, background on utilizing Assessments, especially CDT will increase. This activity is also to build discussion. Please keep in mind that the agree and disagrees are not always black and white, but support discussion.

In the Zip file you will find this handout and the handout with the answers. This works well as a table group activity. After you give your tables time to discuss, provide a choral response. Address concerns that arise. Make copies to give to your participants. These suggested answers for each number are not the only discourse you will gain during this activity. 5.Both* -Diagnostic –Specifically the results for the Classroom Diagnostic Assessment can
be accessed immediately after students take the CDT and Benchmark –only Study Island, as the results can be accessed immediately. Not for 4 Sight. The Open-ended for 4 Sight needs to be hand scored, so reports cannot be run immediately.
6.Diagnostic -The CDT suggests specific eligible content as instructional enrichment that is linked to SAS Materials and Resources. The Instructional Enrichment can also be accessed from the materials and resources of the professionals within the school/district.
7.Benchmark -Benchmark is grade/course level specific and assess mastery of grade/course standards .
8.Diagnostic -specifically the Classroom Diagnostic Tools
9. Both–For both assessments, this is generally a school, content, or individual teacher decision under the leadership of the building principal.
10.Benchmark -specifically the 4 Sight and Study Island Benchmark
11.Both - Although a benchmark is grade level specific, the students may not have been taught what has been assessed on the Benchmark. Likewise, the CDT may provide students assessments that were not formerly taught because of gaps in instruction, student mobility, or questions that are beyond their grade/course.
12.Diagnostic -specifically the Classroom Diagnostic Tools. This tool has been budgeted through the Pennsylvania Department of Education for use by PA teachers for PA students.
13.Both -Diagnostic and benchmark support DI within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), formerly (RtII) framework. Many teachers use benchmark information to differentiate within Tier 1, and depending on what Tiers 2 and 3 look like, they may utilize benchmark information as well to determine which grade/course level skills need intervention/remediation.

A multi-tiered system of support is intended to help educators collaborate and align instructional intensity within both core and supplemental instruction. This requires that educators have a structure that allows them to embed principles of increasing instructional intensity within lesson design and delivery through collaborative problem-solving.
The CDT is part of a comprehensive system. CDT is one measure amidst multiple measures, which are one part, of a comprehensive system.
We know that MTSS is a support for literacy, numeracy, and behavior. The CDT reveals academic strengths and areas of need in relation to literacy in the areas of comprehension & writing and numeracy in areas of mathematics.
Why do we have assessment maps? The assessments we provide our students should give us data that is rich and informative.
No tier of (MTSS) is a silo. Students should be constantly moving fluidly through the tiers. Assessment maps provide insight into each students areas of strength and areas of need to support the movement intervention and enrichment within and between tiers.
CDT information that is used in conjunction with other sources of data including formative and summative assessment data, has the potential to inform instruction and student response to instruction in a timely and efficient manner.

As observed in the multiple measures activity, many of our existing measures are not aligned to PA Core standards. Few assessments measures are true diagnostics even if questions are drilled down through item analysis. Because the CDT is diagnostic in nature relative to student acquisition of the standards, the data may be used to dig deeper and then form flexible groups based upon changing student needs. Teachers can then conduct ongoing formative and summative assessment to determine with students whether they are making progress or not.

Development of Assessment Anchors and Eligible Content
Items for Grades lower than grade 3 were developed and are included in the CDT to provide for the evaluation of the strengths and areas of need for those students working below grade level.
The overarching PA Common Core Standards were used as a guide for developing items for reading, mathematics, and writing. Items were written to measure the most granular level (or most detailed level) of the standards.
The process for science was somewhat different. DRC worked with a committee of Pennsylvania educators with experience at Grades K-2 to develop a set of K-2 Assessment Anchors/Eligible Content using the PA Academic Content Science Standards and other resources.

As shown in the examples, the CDT Learning Progression Map will provide information concerning what each student should know and be able to do at a given grade/course as represented by the Assessment Anchors and Eligible Content.
The map will also provide a view of the pathway, or how learning may take place, for diagnostic categories.
With each individual student map, you may then be able to see a trend, or determine where a student may still be struggling, with a foundational skill/concept he/she may not have mastered at an earlier point in the progression.
Or, you may be able to see a trend showing a student extending beyond what he/she is expected to know and be able to do at a given grade/course.
Regardless, the map provides a visual representation of content/skills on-grade as well as across grades. This information helps to provide more targeted instruction for students.

The information found on the map is as follows:
Grades are displayed along the top (column headings). You may view the map at the grade the student was administered the CDT, or you may view the student’s results as compared to another grade.
Diagnostic categories and sub–categories are displayed along the left side. This display is scrollable, allowing you to view a student’s map for all diagnostic categories in the same order they appear in the other CDT reports. A diagnostic sub-category is displayed by clicking on a diagnostic category.
Three different dots appear on the map; each dot represents Eligible Content within the sub–category.
A green dot means a student answered an item(s) representing the given Eligible Content correctly, indicating a strength in the Eligible Content. A red dot means the student did not answer an item(s) representing the given Eligible Content correctly. The teacher may want to explore each red dot further, as it may indicate an area of need.
A gray dot represents Eligible Content in which the student did not receive an item(s). Gray dots are displayed on the report so that progressions of other appropriate and possibly related Eligible Content may be viewed or explored further.

Only Mathematics Grade 4 Lower Grades graphic is shown for the four diagnostic categories that are the same for grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. The diagnostic categories for these grades include: Numbers and Operations, Algebraic Concepts, Geometry and Measurement, Data, and Probability.
There are also four diagnostic categories for Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry, but they are specific to the course and are divided into two Modules.

1. The passages and literature questions are the same for grades 9-12. All high-school items are aligned to the Keystone Literature Assessment Anchors and Eligible Content; thus, they are not separated by grade. There are items across a wide range of difficulty within high school.
2. Also, how are the first set of passages picked for the grade level? Is it different for each high school grade?
If a student has not previously taken the Reading/Literature CDT, a passage will be selected that has items with item difficulties close to the benchmark for Literature (a score at which Pennsylvania reading/Literature educators felt students demonstrated knowledge expected by the end of a Literature course). If a student has previously taken the Reading/Literature CDT, the passage selected will be based on starting where the student left off in the previous testing opportunity.
3. How does the passage difficulty vary for the high school grades and on what basis are they delivered if they are given?
The Reading/Literature CDT has both fiction and nonfiction passages whose passage contents and readabilities have been used to help determine high school grade appropriateness as required by the Keystone Assessment Anchors and Eligible Content.
However, passage difficulty, as determined by content and readability estimates, is not used to determine the passages delivered to students. Item difficulty is used to determine what items are delivered to a student. Item difficulty is based on the performance of the item during its field test, and it is this item difficulty that is used by the Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) engine.
A passage is selected if items attached to that passage provide the targeted information about a student. If a student has answered an item in a particular diagnostic category correctly and an item in another diagnostic category incorrectly, the CAT will search for a passage that contains a more difficult item in the first diagnostic category and an easier item in the second diagnostic category than those already administered. Not all items developed for a given passage are delivered, and the same items for a given passage are not administered to every student. The CAT engine selects those items that are a good match to help determine the ability level of the student within each diagnostic category.

The writing CDT items are designed to align to the PA Writing and Language Eligible Content codes. Writers create a variety of items to assess the students’ understanding of each individual skill: focus, organization, content, and style. For example, writers craft items that address topic sentence, supporting detail, relevant or irrelevant detail, concluding statement, informal or formal style, and transitional words or phrases.

Students are tested on the PSSA in Science in grades 4, 8, and for Keystone Exam in 11.
The participants may ask: “Why is there a list of many map configurations? Why would teachers use the Grade 6-8 Map configuration instead of the Grade 8 Map configuration?” The decision should be based on the content taught at that grade level. It could be content that spans the grade band, or it could be content specific to a grade level. For an eighth-grade teacher who covers grade 6, 7, and 8 Assessment Anchors and Eligible Content for the Nature of Science and Physical Sciences only, it would make sense to pick Grade band 6-8 Map Configuration, which covers the material being taught in the classroom.
The Grade 6-8 Map Configuration is based on grade 7 benchmark. The Grade 3-5 Map Configuration is based on Grade 5 benchmark. We do not have benchmarks below grade 5, as students are not currently eligible to take the CDT prior to grade 6. (The grade 5 benchmark shows the ability level that Pennsylvania educators felt should be demonstrated by a student who is solidly ready to enter grade 6.)
Science curricula in Pennsylvania vary widely. A grade level curriculum may focus on Earth Space Science rather than on grade-level-specific Eligible Content. Therefore, CDT results should be interpreted based on the curricula used.
Eligible Content was created for non-tested grades (3, 5, 6, and 7) to support the work of the Science CDT. The Assessment Anchors and Eligible Content developed by Pennsylvania educators for each grade level can be found on SAS. Go to the Clear Standards Tab. Go to Download PSSA Anchors. Accommodations are alterations in the way tasks are presented that allow children with learning disabilities to complete the same assignments as other students. They level the playing field. Accommodations do not alter the content of assignments, give students an unfair advantage or in the case of assessments, change what a test measures. They do make it possible for students with LD to show what they know without being impeded by their disability. Once a student has been formally identified with a learning disability, the child or parent may request accommodations for that child’s specific needs. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act states that a child’s IEP team which both parent and child are a part of must decide which accommodations are appropriate for him or her. Any appropriate accommodations should be written into a student’s IEP.
Possible accommodations for an IEP team to consider for Test Scheduling: Administer a test in several timed sessions or over several days; Administer a test at a specific time of day; Provide test prep; Provide on-task/focusing prompts; Provide any reasonable accommodation that a student needs.
Universal Design for Learning is a set of principles for curriculum development that give all individuals equal opportunities to learn. UDL provides a blueprint for creating instructional goals, methods, materials, and assessments that work for everyone – not a single, one size fits all solution, but rather flexible approaches that can be customized and adjusted for individual needs.
The Classroom Diagnostic Tools provides use of both Accommodations and Universal Design for Learning.

It is recommended that any student with Individualized Education Program (IEP) requirements related to receiving audio assistance during testing should receive the audio accommodation. The same is true with any student with an IEP that requires a different color background or colored text; the student should receive the color chooser accommodation. Audio accommodations are available for some CDT assessment content areas, whereas the color chooser accommodation is available for all assessments. If a student requires an accommodation, it is important to make the appropriate selection under Accommodations on the Edit Student screen prior to putting a student into a test session. If the selection is not made, the student will not be administered the test with the audio accommodation.
English Language Learners (ELLs) can have items read aloud and will be allowed access to translation dictionaries for some CDT assessment content areas.

Emphasize that when teachers are going to have students take the CDT, they should forewarn them to help assuage/alleviate possible student anxiety and let the students know how the results will help them and the teacher.
Try to inhibit anxiety about taking the CDT. If the teacher is positive about the CDT, the students will be more likely to look at the CDT as positive. Additionally, as students take the CDT the level configures so the student does not face the typical frustration students feel with test taking. Students need to know how this works. Teachers need to let students know how they will be better able to support them what they don’t understand to move them forward with better understanding the grade level content. The training on the relationship of the teacher and the student will get more specific on setting goals with one-to-one conferencing.

The goal of this activity is to expand participants’ knowledge of the Framework for Principal Effectiveness domains to include the 19 elements.
You may want to run this slide and have the audience highlight the areas of the Components of Professional Practice that relate to utilizing the Classroom Diagnostic Tools. Don’t spend a great deal of time on this activity, but the discussion and connection needs to be reinforced within every professional development we provide that connects the use of the CDT to Principal Effectiveness. This will create rich discourse.

FYI: What is Cloze Procedure? (From Instructional Strategies Online)
Cloze procedure is a technique in which words are deleted from a passage according to a word-count formula or various other criteria. The passage is presented to participants, who insert words as they read to complete and construct meaning from the text. This procedure can be used as a diagnostic reading assessment technique.
What is its purpose?
It is used:
to identify knowledge and understanding of the reading process
to determine which cueing systems readers effectively employ to construct meaning from print
to assess the extent of vocabularies and knowledge of a subject
to encourage monitoring for meaning while reading
to encourage critically and analytically thinking about text and content

Although the Building Principal leads the utilization of the CDT, the building principal can not do it all. Since the Building Principal promotes shared leadership, who leads the individual roles and responsibilities in your school/district?
Give each participant a copy of the Roles and Responsibility Activity. A copy of the Role and Responsibility Activity is in the zip file for this Train the Trainer for Grades 3-5 CDT.

In the zip file you will find a word document entitled CDT Professional Development Modules. Give a set to each participant. Using markers have them review the 8 Modules and highlight and/or take notes. Also, go to eDIRECT to find where they are located. They are training modules for each, along with an Audio Visual presentation for all 7 except Module 8. Module 8 was only developed as an Audio Visual presentation for building principals.

Background Information:
Step 1: Teach students that the ability to learn is not a fixed quantity
The key to a student's ability to become a self-regulated (i.e., metacognitive) learner is understanding that one's ability to learn is a skill that develops over time rather than a fixed trait, inherited at birth. Students who believe that the ability to learn can improve over time earn higher grades, even after controlling for prior achievement (Henderson and Dweck, 1990). These students set reasonable learning goals for themselves and have the self-efficacy to choose and use productive learning strategies. These strategies then result in learning gains. Moreover, students can be taught that their ability to learn can improve over time; those who learn this simple lesson show increased motivation to learn and improved grades (Aronson et al., 2002; Blackwell et al., 2007).
Step 2: Teach students how to set goals and plan to meet them
Many students don't set explicit learning goals for themselves, or make plans to meet any goals they might have. Yet students who received as little as half an hour of training (in the form of one-to-one tutoring) on the process of self-regulated learning outperformed students who did not receive the training in several important ways. First and foremost, they learned more. In addition, they planned how they would spend their time in the learning task, spent more of their time in goal-oriented searching, and periodically reminded themselves of their current goal (Azevedo and Cromley, 2004).
Step 3: Give students opportunities to practice self-monitoring and adapting
Accurate self-monitoring is quite difficult. Many first-year college students, in particular, are over-confident. For example, first-year students at Carnegie Mellon University were asked what grades they anticipated earning in their science and math courses. While results varied somewhat by subject area, more than 90% of students in biology, chemistry, physics and calculus courses expected to earn A's or B's. These expectations were clearly not realistic and suggested some problems on the horizon for these students.

1. Give each participant a copy of the Recommendations for One-to-One Conferencing Booklet.
2. Write each of the 11 questions found on page 4 on large sheets of poster paper and display around the room. Refer to pages Use Around the World/Carousel/Fishbowl. During this activity have participants write their suggestions to the questions on small post-its and place the small post-it on the poster. If you agree with a statement written on a small post-it, recommend to place a check mark on it. Report out. (You may want to add music and stop and start to keep participants on task.)

Using the Recommendations for One-to-One Conferencing Booklet, pgs. 5, 6, and 7, implement Teacher Implementation Talk to the Text.
Give participants time to “Talk to the Text” and report out resonating ideas from Teacher implementation of one-to-one conferences to utilize the results provided by the classroom diagnostic tools … and other data.

Keep in mind that this is often a whole new concept for secondary teachers, but often a practice used by elementary teachers. One-to-One conferencing is important for all students, but emphasize that since this is new implementation, begin with small steps.
