We will explore mobile devices including smartphones, iPads, Motorola Zoom and other tools and discuss their uses in Extension settings. We will provide actual teaching materials, create a site listing mobile applications for Extension professionals and review/demonstrate key apps with a focus on how the apps/tools let us work differently in Extension settings. Apps shared will focus on Extension programming/teaching, work and productivity improvement, and quality of life enhancement. Security issues also will be explored.

6. Mobile Devices
Mobile Devices: tools that allow work normally done at a
desktop to be completed in other environments (often referred
to as virtual environments). These can include many items.
Today we will primarily focus on handheld devices like mobile
smartphones and tablets.
Virtual environments – spaces that can become work areas
that are not a single, specified work space. This can include
working at multiple offices, in other work spaces, in restaurants,
at home, or just about anywhere.

Rise of the cloud.
Rapid tech advancement.

Easier programs replacing the need for everyone to be at the

Phone - One device meets several needs (note activity)
Camera/video
Front cameras for video conferencing
Uses: take photo’s of stuff you need to record like slides during
a presentation, bills (doxo app), signs, stuff you need to
buy/replace, lunch specials, signs, etc.

Voice recognition - eliminates need to type on small keyboards
Bluetooth - connecting devices, including cars with phones
Maps – directions, audio input, audio navigation, real time
traffic conditions

Apple versus Android - usually available in both
Cloud feature apps allow movement between devices and often
