Settlers trying to develop pastoral leases in the Territory faced several problems. Many early farms and stations failed due to lack of infrastructure, isolation, and inhospitable climate and terrain. Issues like poor soils, lack of water supplies, remoteness from markets and support services hampered the economic development of the pastoral industry.
