The private-collective innovation model proposes incentives for individuals and firms to privately invest resources to create public goods innovations (von Hippel and von Krogh's paper in R&D Management, 2006). Public goods innovations are characterized by non-rivalry and non-exclusivity in consumption. To date, there is limited research available on private-collective innovation involving firms. This paper uses a case study design to empirically investigate and extend the private-collective innovation model. We examine the development of the Nokia Internet Tablet, that builds on both proprietary and open source software development, and that involves both Nokia developers and volunteers who are not employed by the company. We find that the incentives proposed by the private-collective innovation model made Nokia release and contribute to open source software for the Internet tablet but that the model also incurs âhidden costs.â We examine actions taken by Nokia to mitigate these costs throughout the development period. We provide empirical evidence for the private-collective innovation model and extend it by including costs and strategic actions in implementing the model. Implications for research and management practice are discussed.

Presented at DocTrain East 2007 by Bob Doyle, DITA Users -- This introduction to XML Authoring will acquaint you with over fifty tools aimed at structuring content with DITA. They are not just DITA-compliant authoring tools (editors) for writers. They also include content management systems (CMS), translation management systems (TMS), and dynamic publishing engines that fully support DITA. You will also need to know about tools that convert legacy documents to DITA and help to design stylesheets for DITA deliverables. The best DITA tools for technical communicators implement the DITA standard while hiding all the complexity of the underlying XML (eXtensible Markup Language). As a tech writer and not a tech, you should be able to forget about XML - except to know that you are using it (DITA is XML) and that it consists of named content elements (or components) with attributes. You need to know enough about the content elements so you can reference (conref) them for reuse. You need to know about their attributes so you can filter on them for conditional processing. And you should appreciate that because components are uniquely identifiable they lend themselves perfectly to automated dynamic assembly using a publishing engine. We will describe how you can get started with structured writing without knowing XML or installing anything. The promise of topic-based structured authoring is not simply better documentation. It is the creation of mission-critical information for your organization, written with a deep understanding of your most important audiences, that can be repurposed to multiple delivery channels and localized for multilingual global markets. You are not just writing content, you are preparing the information deliverables that enhance the value of your organization in all its markets. To do that well, you must understand the latest tools in structured writing that are revolutionizing corporate information systems - today in documentation but tomorrow throughout the enterprise, from external marketing to internal human resources. Whether you are trying to push a new product into a new market or are âonboardingâ a new employee, the need for high quality information to educate the customer or train the new salesperson is a challenge for technical communicators. You need to think outside the docs! The key idea behind Darwin Information Typing Architecture is to create content in small chunks or modules called topics. A topic is the right size when it can stand alone as meaningful information. Topics are then assembled into documents using DITA maps, which are hierarchical lists of pointers or links to topics. The pointers are called âtopicrefsâ (for topic references). Think of documents as assembled from single-source component parts. Assembly can be conditional, dependent on properties or metadata âtagsâ you attach to a topic. For example, the âaudienceâ property might be âbeginnerâ or âadvanced.â At a still finer level of granularity, individual elements of a topic can also be assigned property tags for conditional assembly. More importantly, a topic element can be assigned a unique ID that makes it a content component reusable in other topics. As you will learn, DITA is a leading technology for âcomponent content management,â which multiplies the value of your work. You need to leverage DITA and structured content to multiply your income.

A presentation from Museums and the Web 2009. Maybe youâre supposed to overhaul your institutionâs Web site. Or maybe youâve been directed to visualize and implement new on-line initiatives. Other than knowing your stakeholdersâ wish lists and extensive ideas for Web site content and features â from blogs to on-line collections â you donât have a clear plan of action. You donât even have a defense strategy for why or why not to invest in some of their requests. How, then, can your team drive decision-making? How can you get features implemented based on rational reasons, while balancing institutional goals and audience needs â all without going over budget? This mini-workshop will focus on an often-overlooked core Web site activity: the Feature Prioritization Workshop. You will be introduced to prioritization techniques and tools, how and when to use them, methods for navigating the myriad needs and wants of stakeholders, and some approaches for achieving compromise. You will learn to balance ârequirementsâ with âdesiresâ by using concrete proof points and a convincing defense. And you will also learn about building a phased roadmap that will accommodate the immediate needs of your organization at launch, yet will provide a plan for future iterations and builds. Situational awareness is vital in any situation. If you are unaware of an issue, then you are in a poor position to fix it. However, there is a natural human response to the publication of metrics, which is to optimise for what is measured. Here are some cautionary tales of how performance metrics inadvertently created incentives for behaviour that was bad for the system.

We in the technology world often feel that what we're doing is *so* new, we don't have anything to learn from those who went before. And yet, wherever we look, we catch glimpses of wisdom learned in the past which can be applied to open source software development. We are living in an era when the "digital generation" knows how to use computers, but knows less and less about how to make technology. As the world moves to open source, and people's interaction with computers is dominated by embedded devices, ubiquitous computing, mobile devices and cloud, the typical computer user now has no real ability to change his computing environment in a meaningful way. As a parent, I want to teach my kids control over their environment, and pass on to them the values of the free software and maker movements: curiosity, a desire to learn how things work and share knowledge, and above all, that we are the masters of our own destiny. This presentation shares some of the things which we have done in our family to rear our children in the free and open source ethos.

Passing on the core values of the free software and maker culture is important to me - sharing is good, you have control over your physical and computing environment, and you can do great things with whatever tools and materials you have on hand. Through hackable living space, creative toys, teaching my kids how to use tools and get comfortable with electronics, I hope I'm passing on those values.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. Itâs so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system. About authorWith two decades of experience, Victor is a Java Champion working as a trainer for top companies in Europe. Five thousands developers in 120 companies attended his workshops, so he gets to debate every week the challenges that various projects struggle with. In return, Victor summarizes key points from these workshops in conference talks and online meetups for the European Software Crafters, the worldâs largest developer community around architecture, refactoring, and testing. Discover how Victor can help you on victorrentea.ro : company training catalog, consultancy and YouTube playlists.
