FUNCTIONS
5. One Suggests that ICUs Should be in
centralized place and be contiguous
with or readily accessible to one
another than only if the patient
admitted to the medical surgical
intensive care unit might have or
suddenly develop , cardiac
complications can be treated easily.
The second thought favors that
location should be dependent on the
type of patients .
Eg. Surgical ICU near to the OT
while Medical ICU near to the
medical ward

Every hospital should weigh the advantages & disadvantages of these two systems
carefully & decide which one suits its needs.

Operating room
Recovery room
Respiratory therapy
Laboratory & Radiology
Should not be too far away from General Nursing Units
Should be away from Heavy traffic & noise

7. Individual rooms with full height glass wall in between
Corridors
In case individual room can not be provided – Curtain/Cubicle screening
is recommended
Privacy is must
Entrance doors should be wide enough ( preferably 1.11 meters/1.12
meters )
Rooms should be at least 11.14sq. Meters with free unencumbered
movable space surrounding to the beds
Considerable storage space – to stock a large number of essential items
Isolation room in each ICU

8. Rooms should be sound proofed & air conditioned
All toilers should allow wheel chairs
Toilets should be provided with Grab Bars & Panic buttons with pull cords
Each bed location should have storage cabinet & a writing surface
Nursing station with adequate space for charting & monitoring – so
located that nurse have visual contact with each patient
In Large Units – More than one Nursing stations needed
Central Control System – to seat two/three persons only

9. Minimum amount of furniture & should be movable
Other equipments can be wall fixed
Mechanically/Electrically operated bed – adjustable to various positions
Base & mattress should be firm
Each cubicle should have resuscitation equipment
One or more emergency cart /crash cart/red cart /blue cart
Items which should be placed on a wall at the Head End /On a Free Standing column

• One for compressed air
• Two for oxygen
• Two for suction
2. Nurse Call Button
3. Telephone Outlet

6. Recessed plastic pan below the medical gas module to hold vacuum bottles .

Hand Washing facilities for staff
Facilities for physician for charting & dictations
Multipurpose rooms for conferences /demonstrations/training sessions for patient’s families
Staff lounges
Duty Doctor room with sleeping accommodation.
Family Waiting Room with toilet facilities & Pay Phone facilities
Casual visiting should be discouraged .
OTHER FACILITIES
