My mother always said that family
should matter the most. Personally, I
didn’t agree. I was more interested in
spending time with my friends. Then,

My grandma’s stroke had been massive. She
could no longer move the left side of her
body. She had also lost vision in her left eye.
She needed around-the-clock care. She had
been a very independent person, so this was
a really big blow.
We went to visit my grandma at the nursing
home three times a week. The smell of the
place hit me like a slap in the face. The pale
colors of the floor and walls looked sad and
drained. Plus, the beginning of each visit was

At first, we would help her get more
comfortable. Grandma was often cold,
so we would get her a sweater and the
knitted hat she liked to wear. When the
weather was nice, we would wheel her
outside to sit in the sun. She said the
heat was “delicious.”
After a while, we would start talking and
forget about the place completely…
Listening to the stories made me feel
like I knew them, too.
