Tsunami
1.
2. What is Tsunami???
Giant waves caused by
earthquake or volcanic eruption
under the sea.
Earthquake is the shaking of ground cause by sudden
break/movement of large sections(tectonic plate) of
Earth’s rocky outermost crust.
4. I. Strong ground shaking from an
earthquake.
II. Unusual sea level fluctuation.
III. Abnormally huge FIRST wave
(usually NOT the largest).
IV. Loud ocean roar.
5. How long does it last?
Each wave can last up to
30 minutes.
Danger can last up to
many hours, some cases
>24 hours.
6.
7. 1. Single giant wave.
-- Wave is low, fast, long. Move out in all
direction.
2. Huge cresting wave.
-- Rarely crest-like normal ocean & wind swell
wave.
3. Huge slow wave in the middle of the deep ocean.
-- Almost 950 km/hr in deep ocean, generally
unnoticeable as it is often very low.
4. A tidal wave.
-- Unrelated to tides although impact of tsunami can be
affected by tide level.
5. Tidal wave is caused by tidal effect like
moon/wind/seasonal changes.
6. Tsunami is commonly caused by undersea earthquake.
8. In coastal area height ≥30 feet (100 feet in
extreme cases).
Can move inland several hundred feet.
All low-lying coastal area can be struck by
it.
Made up of a series of waves. 1st is not
largest.
Move faster than a person can run.
Sometimes it cause water near the shore
to recede, exposing ocean floor.
Can occur any time, day/ night.
Can travel up rivers and stream that lead to
ocean.
9.
10. What to Do?
Be aware of facts about tsunami before hand.
Share with relatives and friends.
Save your live and theirs.
Follow teacher and other school personnel’s advice
if you’re in school and hear
tsunami warnings.
Move in order, calm, and safe manner.
If at beach/near ocean, and felt earth shaking, move
IMMEDIATELY to higher ground or inland.
Avoid river valley. DON’T WAIT! You only have a few
minutes to move.
11. After Tsunami:
• Return home only after local officials say it is safe.
• Check yourself for injuries. Get 1st Aid.
• Call professionals with right equipment to help.
• Use telephone only for emergency calls.
• Water cause floor cracks / wall collapse. Stay out of
building that has water around it.
• Be cautious.
• Wear protective clothing,
• Watch animals closely. Keep them under your
direct control.
