2. This photo stands out to me because the white textures on Meryl Streep’s face makes
her eyes and lips stand out. It makes me focus on her eyes and gives off a very serious
tone. This photo is a metaphor of Meryl’s acting career, and how diverse and versatile
she is as an actress. The image is framed into a close-up, as it shows emphasis on
Streep’s face. The composition works well, as the dark background makes Streep’s
face stand out. Her white shirt doesn’t distract you from her face. Her eyes are the
first things that I look at using direct address which is the most common technique in
the photography of people. The makeup emphasises her eyes and the lighting is very
subtle and there doesn’t need to be much of it as her face stands out a lot.
3. The thing I find most striking about this photo is the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio is
holding a Swan. I was first drawn into looking at Leo’s face, and was surprised to see
him holding a Swan. This image captures Leo’s passion for the environment and
wildlife. The photo is framed in the rule of thirds style to draw attention to Leo’s face,
and more particular, his eyes as they are framed right on a golden point. Leo is
wearing black which makes the Swan stand out, and the fact that the Swan is hooked
around his neck makes his face stand out. The two subjects compliment each other in
a fashion. The background is very simple as it shows long grass and reeds, and it is
positioned so you don’t lose attention from Leo. It is a relatively narrow depth of field
and the light focuses on his face which doesn’t detract from him as the subject.
4. The one thing I find most striking about this image is how much emphasis there is
on Cate Blanchett’s face. The close up frame portrays this majorly, and the rule of
thirds is used again here, as her eyes are lined up with the golden points. Direct
address is used in the image on the photo on the left but not on the right. Again, the
main purpose of this image is to show how versatile and diverse Cate is as an
actress. The composition shows everything at the front of the image, as not much can
be seen in the background. The depth of field is very broad as everything is in focus
and the lighting is focused on Cate’s face. The image looks like it was taken from
outside, so the lighting looks very natural, but the black and white tone makes her
face stand out even more. Cate’s expressions emphasise her different roles in movies
and overall reflects her acting career.
5. The thing that stand out to me the most in this image is Johnny Depp’s face. Direct address is
used here so Depp is looking straight at the audience. People are drawn to looking at his hand
as it is front of his face, but then are drawn into looking at his eyes. The rule of thirds is used
here as his face is positioned in the middle of the frame, directly addressing the audience.
There is a very broad depth of field as we can see a wall behind him which is more or less in
focus. Artificial lighting is used to bring out his face. The clothes he is wearing make his face
stand out even more as the dark textures and colours contrast the colour of his face. This
image captures a moment where Depp was in his prime during his acting career, when he was
young and played a variety of roles.
6. The thing that stands out the most in this image is Iggy Pop’s face. It looks very
emotionless compared to the other photos from Leibovitz. The image is framed so
we see the most of his body, which looks old and run down, which makes him
look like an old man. This image captures what Iggy is like now that he has grown
older and his career as a Rock star is more or less over, and his lifeless body
language and facial expressions suggest that he is looking old and it looks like he
is wasting away. The black and white tone affects the lighting, as the artificial
lighting, along with the tone makes his veins, sagging skin and bones stand out
even more. Direct address is used as Iggy is looking straight at the camera. There
is a broad depth of field as we can’t see that far into the background and
everything is in focus.
