2. MOBILE
According to a Greenpeace Report, in 2007 generated
380,000 tonnes of e-waste. Only 3% of this made it to the
authorized recyclers facilities. India’s e-waste generation is
growing at the rate of 15% and is expected to cross 800,000
tonne mark by 2012. By 2015, 2 billion PCs are expected to
invade India’s homes and the mobile subscriber base is
expected to be about 450 million subscribers. The e-waste
generated by just these two segments would be staggering.

9. E-waste generation: Regional spread
• Of the total e-waste generated in the
country, Western India accounts for
the largest proportion at thirty five
percent, followed by the South at
thirty percent. North and East
account for twenty one percent and
fourteen percent respectively. While
North India is not a leading
generator, it happens to be the
leading processing centre of e-waste
in the country. Currently there are
no formal recyclers operating in the
north or the east. There are two
formal recyclers in the south of
India and one in Western India. It is
understood that several formal
recycling facilities would be
coming up across the country in the
next couple of years.
