1 – Connect to the Domain Controllers
Connect to mexicocity-se and tijuana-se, the Domain Controllers, and login as
esgadmin/d3m04esg.
2 – Start the RepliStor GUI
From the mexicocity-se and tijuana-se remote desktop sessions, click the RepliStor
Administration Client Quick Launch button.
3 – Purge the Message Logs
From the mexicocity-se remote desktop session:
1. Double-click mexicocity-se in the Site list pane to connect to it.

2. Right Click in the Messages pane and select Purge Message Log.
Repeat these steps for each server in the Site list to purge the message log for all sites.
When you have finished, all servers in the Site list pane should have a green light next to them.
4 – Connect the GUI to the Correct Sites
1. From the mexicocity-se remote desktop session, double-click monterrey-se in the Site list
pane to connect to it.
2. From the tijuana-se remote desktop session, double-click cabo-se in the Site list pane to
connect to it.
5 – Exchange Module Options
1. Connect to monterrey-se, and login as esgadmin/d3m04esg.

2. From the monterrey-se remote desktop sessions, click the RepliStor Administration Client
Quick Launch button.
3. Select Maintenance Manage Modules.
4. Select ExchangeRepliStor and click Configure.

5. Click Next and explain options for failover configuration. Explain that during the
configuration of Exchange services on CABO-SE and MONTERREY-SE servers a virtual
Exchange Server CANCUN was created in the Exchange organization. You can find more
details on this topic in the EMC RepliStor for Microsoft Windows Version 6.2 SP1 Release
Notes. Click Next.
6. Explain VSS options and click Next.

7. Explain that Exchange Support Module requires administrative privileges account and
password information. Click Next.
8. Click Cancel on Ready to Install the Program screen.

6 – Activate the Exchange alias
From the mexicocity-se remote desktop session:
1. Select Maintenance Alias.

2. Click the Activate Aliases checkbox and click OK.
3. Wait until the message Successfully added alias: CANCUN-SE appears in the Messages
pane.
4. Right click the First Storage Group spec and select Enable.

5. Right click the First Storage Group specification and select Synchronize.
6. On the Sync Options screen click Sync Now.
7. Confirm that you want to synchronize the specification by clicking Yes.

8. Wait until the scale icon is level.
7 – Connect to Outlook and the DNS Admin
From the mexicocity-se remote desktop session:
1. Click the Outlook quick launch button.
2. Click OK to connect to the California profile.
3. Connect to the DNS Administrator
From the tijuana-se remote desktop session:
1. Click the Outlook quick launch button.
2. Click OK to connect to the Utah profile.

8 – Show the DNS and Outlook Config
From the mexicocity-se remote desktop session:
1. In the DNS window show the mexico.legato.com forward lookup zone and verify that the
CANCUN-SE alias refers to monterrey-se.
2. In the Outlook window select Tools Email Accounts.

5. Show that the Microsoft Exchange Server is listed as CANCUN-SE and click Cancel.

From the tijuana-se remote desktop session:
1. Show the mexico.legato.com forward lookup zone and verify that the CANCUN-SE alias
refers to monterrey-se.

9 – Send Messages
1. From the mexicocity-se remote desktop session send a message from the California user to
the Utah user.

2. From the tijuana-se remote desktop session, verify that the message was received and send a
reply from the Utah user to the California user.

10 – Trigger a Failover
From the mexicocity-se remote desktop session:
1. Click Aliases, right click the CANCUN-SE alias and select Properties.
2. Explain the Alias, IP Addresses, Services, and Target tabs.
Explain that Manual Activation on Target is generally enabled for WAN failover and disabled
for LAN failover. Explain that split brain occurs if Manual Activation on Target is disabled,
the network connection between the cluster nodes goes down, and the target takes over while the
source is still running. Manual Activation on Target is suggested so that a person can verify
that the network connection has not failed, and thereby prevent split brain from occurring.
Click OK when you are finished.

3. Right click the CANCUN-SE alias and select Manual Fail.
4. Click OK to confirm that you want to transfer the alias to the target.
5. Wait until the message Successfully removed alias: CANCUN-SE appears in the Messages
pane.
From the tijuana-se remote desktop session:
6. Right click the CANCUN-SE alias and select Activate.
7. Click Yes to confirm that you want to activate CANCUN-SE the alias.

8. Wait until the CANCUN-SE alias has been activated.
11 – Reconnect to Outlook
From the tijuana-se remote desktop session:
1. Confirm the Outlook message that accompanies the failover event.
2. Close Outlook.
3. From the DNS administrator, right-click a blank area of the screen and select Refresh.
Note – The DNS update may take a couple of minutes
to appear.

4. Confirm that the CANCUN-SE alias now references cabo-se instead of monterrey-se.
5. Restart Outlook
From the mexicocity-se remote desktop session:
1. Confirm the Outlook message that accompanies the failover event.
2. Close Outlook.
3. From the DNS administrator, right-click a blank area of the screen and select Refresh.
Note – The DNS update may take a couple of minutes
to appear.
4. Confirm that the CANCUN-SE alias now references cabo-se instead of monterrey-se.
5. Restart Outlook

12 – Send Messages
During the failover you may see the following messages from Outlook. They indicate that
Replistor is in process of transferring control over to a stand-by Exchange server.
1. From the tijuana-se remote desktop session, send a message from the Utah user to the
California user.

2. From the mexicocity-se remote desktop session, verify that the message was received and
send a reply from the California user to the Utah user.

3. From the tijuana-se remote desktop session verify that the reply was received
13 – Trigger a Failback
From the tijuana-se remote desktop session:
1. Right-click the CANCUN-SE alias and select Fail Back.
2. Click Yes to confirm that you want to initiate the fail back for CANCUN-SE alias.
3. Wait until the message Successfully removed alias: CANCUN-SE appears in the Messages
pane.

From the mexicocity-se remote desktop session:
1. Right-click the First Storage Group specification and select Enable.
2. Right-click the First Storage Group specification and select Synchronize.

3. On the Sync Options screen click Sync Now.
4. Confirm that you want to synchronize the specification by clicking Yes.
5. Wait until the scale icon is level.
14 – Reconnect to Outlook
From the mexicocity-se remote desktop session:
1. Confirm the Outlook message that accompanies the failover event.

2. Close Outlook.
3. From the DNS administrator, right-click a blank area of the screen and select Refresh.

4. Confirm that the CANCUN-SE alias now references monterrey-se instead of cabo-se.
5. Restart Outlook.
Note – If you get an error that the Exchange server
cannot be contacted, the DNS alias update has not
propagated or the Exchange server is not ready.
Wait a few seconds and try again.

5. Restart Outlook.

Note – If you get an error that the Exchange server
cannot be contacted, the DNS alias update has not
propagated or the Exchange server is not ready.
Wait a few seconds and try again.
15 – Send Messages
1. From the mexicocity-se remote desktop session, send a message from the California user to
the Utah user.

reply from the California user to the Utah user.

16 – Create a VSS snapshot
From the mexicocity-se remote desktop session:
1. Right-click the First Storage Group specification and select Modify.
2. Click the VSS Parameters tab.

3. Explain that if the Shadow Copy On Target option is selected, the RepliStor driver forwards
a Shadow Copy operation for a volume that it is mirroring as it would any other write
operation. RepliStor pauses replication immediately before the Shadow Copy operation and
un-pauses replication immediately after the Shadow Copy operation to ensure consistency of
the snapshot on the target system.
4. Click VSS Schedule.

5. Explain that Shadow Copies can be created manually or according to a schedule.
6. Click Cancel to close the Shadow Copy Schedule window. Click Cancel again to close the
Specifications window
7. Make sure that the specification First Storage Group is enabled. Right-click First Storage
Group and select Shadow Copy to perform a manual Shadow Copy.

8. Verify that backup type is set to Full and click OK to confirm that you want to create a
Shadow Copy.
9. Wait for the message Shadow Copy validation has been completed successfully on the
target to appear in the Messages pane. The Shadow Copy has been created and validated.
17 – Remove the Exchange Database
From the mexicocity-se remote desktop session:
1. Select Maintanance Alias.

2. Uncheck Activate Aliases and click OK.
3. Wait until Successfully removed alias: CANCUN-SE appears in the Messages pane.

4. Double-click the monterrey_exch shortcut on the desktop to open monterrey-
sed$Program FilesExchsrvrmdbdata.
5. Delete all Exchange database files.
From the tijuana-se remote desktop session:
1. Double-click the cabo_exch shortcut on the desktop to open cabo-sed$Program
FilesExchsrvrmdbdata.
2. Verify that deletion of the Exchange files has been replicated.

18 – Recover Exchange
From the mexicocity-se remote desktop session, right click the First Storage Group
specification and select Disable.
From the tijuana-se remote desktop session:
1. Look under the monterrey-se source site for the Shadow Copy Set you created previously,
right-click it and select Revert. Explain that the Shadow Copy Set can also be mounted to a
directory.

2. Mark the checkbox next to Force unmount of volume and click OK.
3. Wait until the message Shadow Copy successfully reverted appears in the Messages pane.
4. Double-click the cabo_exch shortcut on the desktop to open cabo-sed$Program
FilesExchsrvrmdbdata.
5. Navigate to cabo-sed$Program FilesExchsrvrmdbdata to show the Exchange data as it
existed at the time the Shadow Copy was created.

6. Right-click cabo-se and select Add Specification…
7. Select D:Program FilesExchsrvrmdbdata as the source and click Next.

8. Select MONTERREY-SE as the target server, verify that Same as Source is selected and
click Next.

10. Click Next to accept the default VSS Parameter (disabled).

11. Click Finish to accept the default Synchronization options.
12. Click Yes to confirm the circular replication warning.

14. Right click the D:Program FilesExchsrvrmdbdata specification and select Disable.

19 – Start and Resync Exchange
From the mexicocity-se remote desktop session:
1. Double-click the monterrey_exch shortcut on the desktop to open monterrey-
sed$Program FilesExchsrvrmdbdata.
2. Show the data in monterrey-sed$Program FilesExchsrvrmdbdata has been restored.

3. Select Maintenance->Alias.
4. Mark the checkbox next to Activate Aliases, and click OK.
5. Wait until the message Successfully added alias: CANCUN-SE appears in the Messages
pane.

9. Click Yes to confirm that you want to begin the replication.
10. Wait until the scale next to sync status is level.
11. Send additional test messages with Outlook, if desired.
