Rotary Youth Exchange
Host Family – What it Really is All About
C lub presidents often call on Rotary Youth Exchange Officers to
comment on the Rotary Student Exchange Program, and I think that is admirable.
However, I get the feeling that much of what the YE Officers say falls on deaf
ears. As much as we talk about RYE in our meetings, I’m just not sure that many
of our members either understand or appreciate the value of the program, and
what a huge impact it has on the lives of so many people. YE Officers literally
have to beg for host families each year, and when they beg, I get the feeling that
few are listening. I am pretty sure that is the case because for a long time, I was
one of the people who were not listening.
For me, agreeing to become a host family the first time was pure
impulse. It had little to do with anyone’s appeals, except that I got tired of our YE
Officer begging and no one responding. So I said “I’ll do it.” That impulse changed
the way I looked at Rotary and to some extent; it changed my outlook on life.
Having been a host family for the second time now, I realize just how important
the program is to the Rotary ideal and Rotary mission worldwide. It is Rotary
International defined. I don’t think there is a more important program to Rotary
than RYE. And the bottom line is that without host families, the program will not
work. Host families are the lynchpin between success and failure. That was
hammered home to me one recent weekend when I attended the Host Family

(Bellaire/ Houston, Texas) On March 16, 2012, Bellaire/
Southwest Houston Rotary gifted its namesake city with an elegant new
landmark: a fifteen-and-a-half foot clock tower that now graces the central
intersection of Bellaire Boulevard and S. Rice Avenue in the heart of
Bellaire’s Paseo Park. With a $25,000 price tag, the old world clock
represents the service group’s major community donation for this Rotary
Year and is both a useful and lasting monument that will be enjoyed for
many generations. “We’re extremely proud to be able to do this for our
wonderful community,” club spokesperson, attorney Nan Wagoner said.
“The inscription, ‘It’s always time for service above self ’, on the
commemorative plaque is a Rotary reminder of the importance of
community spirit in keeping Bellaire the great place to live and work that
it has become - - and it’s also the motto that Bellaire Rotarians try to live
into every day,” she added.

District 5890 The Rotary Foundation Update
April 1, 2012 Report
Dear District 5890 Rotarians,
In a Surprise Move – thought to be due to depression on hearing that “her year” is ¾ done, DG Rhonda Walls Kerby has asked DGE Chris Schneider and DGN Bob Gebhard
to postpone their years, so she can be District Governor for two more years! Aprils Fools
A pecial – Recognition Point Match – is available for all recurring contributions to the Annual Programs Fund through Rotary Direct (formerly called TRF
Direct) from April 1, 2012 to July 1, 2012. See all the details at the bottom of this report.
Big Do’ins - I hope all of you are now aware of the amazing recent Polio Plus Milestones. India has been removed from the Polio Endemic Country list with no Polio cases
registered for over one year. And we passed the $200 Mil mark in giving to the Polio Challenge. Three Polio Endemic Countries remain: Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria (PAN). Only
36 Polio cases have been reported worldwide this year. We really are “This Close”! But we are not done yet. Our goal is 100% worldwide Polio Eradication and we must continue to fund
PolioPlus until the job is finished.
We also now have over 350 Polio Plus Society members (who donate $100+ to TRF for Polio Plus each year). Please email Polio Plus Society Chair Charles Davis
charmardavis@yahoo.com to receive your pin when you are ready to join.
Congratulations! Our D5890 clubs and members have contributed over ¾ of a $ Million ($753,594) since the 12/01/07 start of the Polio Challenge.
The New 2011-12 Rotary Year is over 3/4 in the bag with DG Rhonda at the helm. See which clubs are tops in giving to The Rotary Foundation, at the bottom of this report.
And Then There Were 19 – Our Newest 100% Paul Harris Fellow Club is…Champions Sunrise! That brings our total to 19 clubs which are or have been 100% PHF since
the program started in 1998. See the complete list of 100% PHF Clubs in the Downloads on the left side of the www.rotary5890.org site. Which club will be #20? Contact Karen
Blakeman at kablakeman@hotmail.com to find out how your club can step up.
Want to Learn More? All Rotarians are invited – To the Saturday, May 19, 2012, Club Leadership Training Seminar (District Assembly) at Memorial High School. See details
at www.rotary5890.org.
Grant Training - Two Rotarians in your club must be trained to apply for District & Global Grants in the coming 2012-13 Rotary Year. Grants Training was offered at the
President Elects Training Seminar and will be offered at the Club Leadership Training Seminar.
The following have joined the ranks of District 5890 Major Donors since July 1, 2011: DG Rhonda Walls Kerby (Katy), AG Michelle Bohreer (Houston), John Neighbors (West U),
Bill & Kate Baker (University Area), AG Ronnie Hallenberger (West U), and continuing Major Donors John & Dianne Painter (Northshore). Please join me in congratulating them!
Also congratulate our newest continuing Bequest Society Members – Max & Trudi Esses (Beq.Soc Level 1 to 2 - Bellaire).
In addition, congratulations to several D5890 Rotarians who have agreed to join the Paul Harris Society ($1,000 per year to the Annual Programs Fund) this year. They include: Jacque
Cundieff, Jane Leidlein & Vicki Melass – (all Brazosport), Craig Frio (West U), Venu Rao (Memorial /Spring Branch), Rick Slemaker (Houston), Martin Bailey (Galleria), Chad Gormly
(Alvin), Terry Droege (Alvin Sunrise), Mike Hess (Space Center) & Frank Parilla (West U).
Do you want to look your best at your club’s 2012 events? To do so, I would suggest that you wear an END POLIO NOW tie (just like the one Bill Gates wore on the
stage at the RI Convention in New Orleans). I have them on hand and I will give you one in exchange for a new $200 donation to Polio Plus! Contact me at the email address below.
The Annual Fund Side - I’m proud to report that since July 1, 49 of our 63 clubs (or their members) have already made initial donations to the Annual Programs Fund.
District 5890 Rotarians have raised a total of $263,679 for the Annual Programs Fund since 7/1/11 (50% of which will come back to our District in the 2014-15 Rotary Year). FYI –
Donations by Future Vision Districts (such as ours) are up 4% so far this Rotary, Year compared to last year. Donations by non-pilots are down by 5%

Magazine Month
The Legal Beagle’s Corner....
Well this month is Magazine Month in Rotary International! Now I
know what you are thinking, how can a beagle get excited about Magazine
Month? Well I look at it like this way, if it was not for me reading a copy of
my Mommy’s Rotarian magazine, I would not of all the great work that
Rotarians are doing all around the world (remember my parents will not get
me my own I Pad). Unfortunately, when I read the Rotarian magazine there
are not enough stories in it about my friends and the hard work they do to
make the world a better place. So do not forget to submit your stories to not
only the Rotarian magazine, but for my Mommy’s newsletter. Also, I
wanted to remind all of my Rotary friends that have pets that the Marriot
Horseshoe Bay, the site of this year’s District Conference, is pet friendly. So
bring along your four legged friends, because I have heard a rumor that there
District Governor Rhonda & Snapper will be a Blue Bell ice cream social on Saturday and I love Blue Bell…..I
have been known to sneak in the house, get the ice cream scoop out of the
drawer, get out a bowl and have a few scoops when my parents are not looking.
Shhhh….. No one tell them, they both think the missing ice cream is the
other one’s fault because I do not have an opposable thumb….. Our little
secret…….
Love,
Snapper the Wonder Beagle
