                            Rotary Youth Exchange
Host Family – What it Really is All About
C lub presidents often call on Rotary Youth Exchange Officers to
comment on the Rotary Student Exchange Program, and I think that is admirable.
However, I get the feeling that much of what the YE Officers say falls on deaf
ears. As much as we talk about RYE in our meetings, I’m just not sure that many
of our members either understand or appreciate the value of the program, and
what a huge impact it has on the lives of so many people. YE Officers literally
have to beg for host families each year, and when they beg, I get the feeling that
few are listening. I am pretty sure that is the case because for a long time, I was
one of the people who were not listening.
For me, agreeing to become a host family the first time was pure
impulse. It had little to do with anyone’s appeals, except that I got tired of our YE
Officer begging and no one responding. So I said “I’ll do it.” That impulse changed
the way I looked at Rotary and to some extent; it changed my outlook on life.
Having been a host family for the second time now, I realize just how important
the program is to the Rotary ideal and Rotary mission worldwide. It is Rotary
International defined. I don’t think there is a more important program to Rotary
than RYE. And the bottom line is that without host families, the program will not
work. Host families are the lynchpin between success and failure. That was
hammered home to me one recent weekend when I attended the Host Family
                                                                                                          Bernie Satterwhite and Marie

Southwest Houston Rotary gifted its namesake city with an elegant new
landmark: a fifteen-and-a-half foot clock tower that now graces the central
intersection of Bellaire Boulevard and S. Rice Avenue in the heart of
Bellaire’s Paseo Park. With a $25,000 price tag, the old world clock
represents the service group’s major community donation for this Rotary
Year and is both a useful and lasting monument that will be enjoyed for
many generations. “We’re extremely proud to be able to do this for our
wonderful community,” club spokesperson, attorney Nan Wagoner said.
“The inscription, ‘It’s always time for service above self ’, on the
commemorative plaque is a Rotary reminder of the importance of
community spirit in keeping Bellaire the great place to live and work that
it has become - - and it’s also the motto that Bellaire Rotarians try to live

Big Do’ins - I hope all of you are now aware of the amazing recent Polio Plus Milestones. India has been removed from the Polio Endemic Country list with no Polio cases
registered for over one year. And we passed the $200 Mil mark in giving to the Polio Challenge. Three Polio Endemic Countries remain: Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria (PAN). Only
36 Polio cases have been reported worldwide this year. We really are “This Close”! But we are not done yet. Our goal is 100% worldwide Polio Eradication and we must continue to fund
PolioPlus until the job is finished.
We also now have over 350 Polio Plus Society members (who donate $100+ to TRF for Polio Plus each year). Please email Polio Plus Society Chair Charles Davis
charmardavis@yahoo.com to receive your pin when you are ready to join.
Congratulations! Our D5890 clubs and members have contributed over ¾ of a $ Million ($753,594) since the 12/01/07 start of the Polio Challenge.
The New 2011-12 Rotary Year is over 3/4 in the bag with DG Rhonda at the helm. See which clubs are tops in giving to The Rotary Foundation, at the bottom of this report.
And Then There Were 19 – Our Newest 100% Paul Harris Fellow Club is…Champions Sunrise! That brings our total to 19 clubs which are or have been 100% PHF since
the program started in 1998. See the complete list of 100% PHF Clubs in the Downloads on the left side of the www.rotary5890.org site. Which club will be #20? Contact Karen
Blakeman at kablakeman@hotmail.com to find out how your club can step up.
Want to Learn More? All Rotarians are invited – To the Saturday, May 19, 2012, Club Leadership Training Seminar (District Assembly) at Memorial High School. See details

contact.center@rotary.org or by phone, 866.976.8279. What is Rotary Direct Rotary Direct (formerly known as TRF-Direct) is The Rotary Foundation’s recurring giving
program. Select an amount, frequency (monthly, quarterly or annually), and contribution method. You can set up recurring gifts to the Annual Fund, PolioPlus and the Areas of
Focus. What are the promotion details? View the Join Rotary Direct and earn double recognition web announcement and Rotary Direct Information Guide for additional
information. Double recognition points will be automatically given to Rotarians and friends of Rotary who are enrolled in Rotary’s recurring giving program, Rotary Direct, and
make one or more scheduled (monthly, quarterly or annual) contributions between 1 April and 1 July 2012. Unlike past promotions for online giving, this special opportunity
is available to recurring (monthly, quarterly, annual) contributions only, and is not available for one-time contributions. All recurring transactions that take place between 1
April and 1 July 2012 will generate double Foundation recognition points, but will not result in double recognition amount for the individual donor. Donors can extend their
available Foundation recognition points to others to name them as a Paul Harris Fellow or Multiple Paul Harris Fellow. A donor’s personal recognition amount which is used to
calculate their own Paul Harris Fellow status will not be subject to doubling. How do you sign up? You can sign up online or by completing the TRF Contribution Form. Online:
Once registered in Member Access, Rotarians can contribute at www.rotary.org/contribute. The recurring option is presented in Step 2 of the contribution process under the
section titled “*Frequency.” Contribution Form: Donors may enroll using The Rotary Foundation Contribution Form (123) by checking the frequency box (monthly, quarterly
or annually) under section “3. Contribution Details- Make this a recurring contribution.” Do you have additional questions? Questions about this promotion may be directed
to Rotary’s Contact Center, contact.center@rotary.org or by phone, 866.976.8279. Please spread this great news and increase support to The Rotary Foundation as we
encourage Rotary Direct which helps you save time, money, and lives through your generous recurring contributions. Contact Lucy (lnpendon@embarqmail.com) or Terry
(bigzlumber@aol.com) to arrange a club program featuring the latest information about The Rotary Foundation’s Annual Programs Fund or PolioPlus.

Please let me know if you have any questions & Thanks for all you do for Rotary!

  Magazine Month

The Legal Beagle’s Corner....
Well this month is Magazine Month in Rotary International! Now I
know what you are thinking, how can a beagle get excited about Magazine
Month? Well I look at it like this way, if it was not for me reading a copy of
my Mommy’s Rotarian magazine, I would not of all the great work that
Rotarians are doing all around the world (remember my parents will not get
me my own I Pad). Unfortunately, when I read the Rotarian magazine there
are not enough stories in it about my friends and the hard work they do to
make the world a better place. So do not forget to submit your stories to not
only the Rotarian magazine, but for my Mommy’s newsletter. Also, I
wanted to remind all of my Rotary friends that have pets that the Marriot
Horseshoe Bay, the site of this year’s District Conference, is pet friendly. So
bring along your four legged friends, because I have heard a rumor that there
District Governor Rhonda & Snapper will be a Blue Bell ice cream social on Saturday and I love Blue Bell…..I
have been known to sneak in the house, get the ice cream scoop out of the
drawer, get out a bowl and have a few scoops when my parents are not looking.
Shhhh….. No one tell them, they both think the missing ice cream is the
other one’s fault because I do not have an opposable thumb….. Our little
                                     secret…….
                                     Love,

                                               Snapper the Wonder Beagle

  • 6. Page 6 Rotary Youth Exchange Host Family – What it Really is All About C lub presidents often call on Rotary Youth Exchange Officers to comment on the Rotary Student Exchange Program, and I think that is admirable. However, I get the feeling that much of what the YE Officers say falls on deaf ears. As much as we talk about RYE in our meetings, I’m just not sure that many of our members either understand or appreciate the value of the program, and what a huge impact it has on the lives of so many people. YE Officers literally have to beg for host families each year, and when they beg, I get the feeling that few are listening. I am pretty sure that is the case because for a long time, I was one of the people who were not listening. For me, agreeing to become a host family the first time was pure impulse. It had little to do with anyone’s appeals, except that I got tired of our YE Officer begging and no one responding. So I said “I’ll do it.” That impulse changed the way I looked at Rotary and to some extent; it changed my outlook on life. Having been a host family for the second time now, I realize just how important the program is to the Rotary ideal and Rotary mission worldwide. It is Rotary International defined. I don’t think there is a more important program to Rotary than RYE. And the bottom line is that without host families, the program will not work. Host families are the lynchpin between success and failure. That was hammered home to me one recent weekend when I attended the Host Family Bernie Satterwhite and Marie Appreciation Dinner in Humble. or anywhere. It let everyone know that she was a German citizen. Then, to top Initially, I was not going to attend that dinner because it was far from things off, she got her picture taken with the President of Rotary International. home and I thought I had other, more important things to do. As it turned out, Wow, what an honor and thrill for her. Would it have been the same for you or me? there was nothing I could be doing during at that time that would have been more …Probably not, but it certainly was for her and it showed. And we, as her host important. That event culminated a very interesting and rewarding week as a host parents, shared her joy, and pride and excitement. What a wonderful experience parent. I’d like to share that week with you so that perhaps, we could find a way it was for us. to communicate not only the need for host families, but the criticality in sustaining Then on Saturday, I had to get Marie to school at 6:50 so she could go such an important program. with her soccer team to a tournament in Dickinson. Marie was on the Bellaire It wasn’t a particularly remarkable week. We didn’t go to any exotic High School JV soccer team and the tournament was to last all day. Well, we places or see any exciting events or happenings. In looking back, what strikes me really wanted to go to the ranch that day, since we had not been in a couple of most about the week was that it was just a normal week with a normal American weeks, but as all parents know, sometimes you can’t necessarily do exactly what family (well, normal except for me I suppose.) Marie began the week very stressed you want to do when you have children with needs of their own. But Marie had and frustrated, and in somewhat of a foul mood, principally because of school. said that if we wanted to go to the ranch afterwards, she would not mind, even The fact is that Marie takes school very, very seriously. She wants to do well and though it was going to be a long day. I told her we would see how the day shaped she works hard. She had also just gotten over a very bad cold and had missed out. They were scheduled to play at least three games, and only if they won all some school because of that and because of other events. So she had a lot of catch three, would they play a fourth. Marie had assured us that they probably would up work in addition to several projects that were due in a number of subjects. To not win all three. We chose not to go watch until afternoon, so we were kind of add to her stress, for a couple of the projects, she was teamed up with other students waiting to see how the morning went. She texted us after the second game that with whom she was to complete the projects jointly. Well, as is often the case, the they had won both and the team they were playing third had not won any games students that she was paired with disappointed her and did not do their share of all year. So, you guessed it, it was going to be a four-game day. So we went for the the work. So instead of just doing just what she was supposed to do, she wanted third game and they won 6-0, and we found ourselves not really caring about the to ensure the projects were complete, so she did both entire projects herself. ranch anymore, but instead, we became wrapped up in the excitement of cheering Do you remember when your children were disappointed? Didn’t you Marie’s team to victory. They then played Clements, who was believed to have feel with them? Didn’t you share their disappointment, frustration and stress when the stronger team, in the championship game, and yes, Bellaire won. It was a they confided in you and you realized there was not much you could do for them cold, windy and very long day, but they had so much fun. And because of that, we but listen? Well, I remember, and those memories came back to me that week. did as well. They came back because of a bond that you form with a girl from another country, So we didn’t get headed home until about 7:30. I said we’ll just go away from home and her real parents for the first time in her life, who depends on home and not worry about the ranch. But Marie insisted we go, not because she you to take their place, if only temporarily. wanted to terribly, but because she knew I wanted to. So we went and got there But the week went on, the projects got completed, the schoolwork was about 10pm. We got the fire going in the fireplace and the house warmed up, and caught up and the stress subsided, just like we knew it would. Then, Marie got to fixed hot chocolate (and something a bit stronger for the adults) and had a very attend the Rotary all-club meeting. Unfortunately, I could not attend, but it was relaxing evening after a very enjoyable day. pure joy to see her when she got home. She was beaming, just like a 17 year-old Then, on Sunday, after doing the things I wanted to do around the should from time to time when she has had the opportunity to experience new ranch, we left in time to drive to Humble for the Host Family Appreciation Dinner. things and feel new emotions. At the all-club meeting, the students performed the During that evening’s events, it dawned on me exactly why I volunteered to be a famous RYE Flag Ceremony. The flag ceremony is probably one of the most host family for the second time in three years. Not only did the students perform impressive and inspirational events the students participate in. The students are the flag ceremony for us, but there were testimonials by the students about what it introduced one by one and they march in carrying their country’s flag. I knew meant for them to have this opportunity to go away from home at a very young Marie would take pride in that ceremony even before she did. But when she age and experience family life in another country…not just life in another country, described it later, she was literally beaming with pride. You see, in many countries, but family life. And that is what the program is about. And that is why it is so the flag is not as important as it is here. The people do not live national pride like important. Then each student was asked to introduce their host families. Our club we do. Both of the exchange students I have hosted were amazed by the fact that and our student’s host families were well represented, and you could tell that you see American (and Texas) flags everywhere you go. ROTARIANS GIFT BELLAIRE WITH ELEGANT NEW LANDMARK (Bellaire/ Houston, Texas) On March 16, 2012, Bellaire/ Southwest Houston Rotary gifted its namesake city with an elegant new landmark: a fifteen-and-a-half foot clock tower that now graces the central intersection of Bellaire Boulevard and S. Rice Avenue in the heart of Bellaire’s Paseo Park. With a $25,000 price tag, the old world clock represents the service group’s major community donation for this Rotary Year and is both a useful and lasting monument that will be enjoyed for many generations. “We’re extremely proud to be able to do this for our wonderful community,” club spokesperson, attorney Nan Wagoner said. “The inscription, ‘It’s always time for service above self ’, on the commemorative plaque is a Rotary reminder of the importance of community spirit in keeping Bellaire the great place to live and work that it has become - - and it’s also the motto that Bellaire Rotarians try to live into every day,” she added. On hand for Clock Tower Installation Day were BSWH Rotarians Matt Lopez, Bellaire Assistant Chief of Police Byron Holloway, for an excellent turnout this San Jacinto Day.” “We encourage everyone David Truran of Keller Williams Realty, club president Ed Seale, Tradition to come for a terrific time and to bid generously on our superb auction Bank CEO Craig Wooten, Judy Harwell, financial planner Surpris items,” Wagoner said. Page 11 District 5890 The Rotary Foundation Update April 1, 2012 Report Dear District 5890 Rotarians, In a Surprise Move – thought to be due to depression on hearing that “her year” is ¾ done, DG Rhonda Walls Kerby has asked DGE Chris Schneider and DGN Bob Gebhard to postpone their years, so she can be District Governor for two more years! Aprils Fools A pecial – Recognition Point Match – is available for all recurring contributions to the Annual Programs Fund through Rotary Direct (formerly called TRF Direct) from April 1, 2012 to July 1, 2012. See all the details at the bottom of this report. Big Do’ins - I hope all of you are now aware of the amazing recent Polio Plus Milestones. India has been removed from the Polio Endemic Country list with no Polio cases registered for over one year. And we passed the $200 Mil mark in giving to the Polio Challenge. Three Polio Endemic Countries remain: Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria (PAN). Only 36 Polio cases have been reported worldwide this year. We really are “This Close”! But we are not done yet. Our goal is 100% worldwide Polio Eradication and we must continue to fund PolioPlus until the job is finished. We also now have over 350 Polio Plus Society members (who donate $100+ to TRF for Polio Plus each year). Please email Polio Plus Society Chair Charles Davis charmardavis@yahoo.com to receive your pin when you are ready to join. That brings our total to 19 clubs which are or have been 100% PHF since the program started in 1998. See the complete list of 100% PHF Clubs in the Downloads on the left side of the www.rotary5890.org site. Which club will be #20? Contact Karen Blakeman at kablakeman@hotmail.com to find out how your club can step up. Want to Learn More? All Rotarians are invited – To the Saturday, May 19, 2012, Club Leadership Training Seminar (District Assembly) at Memorial High School. See details at www.rotary5890.org. Unfortunately, when I read the Rotarian magazine there are not enough stories in it about my friends and the hard work they do to make the world a better place. So do not forget to submit your stories to not only the Rotarian magazine, but for my Mommy’s newsletter.
