3. Early History of Cement
ï In ancient times, egyptians mostly used material
obtained by burning gypsum.
ï Greeks and romans used the material obtained by
burning lime stone.
ï First cement was invented by Joseph Aspidin on 21st
October 1824.
4. ï First cement factory was started at Portland in
England.
ï In India, cement was first manufactured in 1904 in
Madras by South India Industrial Ltd.
ï Next generation was started by Indian Cement Co.
Ltd(1912 â 1913).
5. Manufacture of cement
ï Two ways of Manufacturing cement
ï Dry Process
ï Wet Process (addition of Water)
7. Aggregates
ï Aggregates give body to the Concrete.
ï They reduce Shrinkage and effect Economy.
ï Aggregates occupy 70 â 80% of Volume of Concrete.
ï Cement is standard component in concrete.
8. ï Concrete can be considered as Two phases:
ï PASTE phase
ï AGGREGATE phase(contains Aggregates)
9. Shapes of Aggregates
ï Rounded Aggregates â fully water worn
ï Irregular Aggregates â having rounded edges
ï Angular Aggregates â well defined edges
ï Flaky Aggregates â with small thickness, angular
10. Types of Concrete
ï Fresh Concrete
ï Hardened Concrete
ï Special Concrete
ï Light â Weight Concrete
ï Fibre Reinforced Concrete
ï Reinforced Cement Concrete
ï High Density Concrete
ï Self Compacting Concrete(scc)
11. ï Light Weight Aggregate Concrete:
1. it contains light weight aggregates
2.used in preparing ccrt. Densities of
300 to 1900 kg/m3
ï Fibre Reinforced Concrete:
1. it contains fibre coating to
reinforcements.
12. ï Reinforced Cement Concrete:
1. it is mostly used in now a days
because of its reinforcements
ï SCC:
1. the main use of this concrete
occurs because of property that it self compacts
during placing of concrete.
13. Process of Manufacturing of Concrete
ï Batching
Volume Batching
Weigh Batching
ï Mixing
Machine Mixing
Hand Mixing
ï Transportation
Pumps and Pipelines
14. ï Placing

Vibratory Rollers
15. ï Curing

16. Properties
ï Workability â ease with concrete can be placed and
compacted.
ï Factors affecting:
1. Water Content
2.Size of Aggregates
3.Shape of Aggregates
4.Mix proportions
5.Grading of Aggregates
6.Surface Texture of Aggregates
17. ï Strength of Concrete:
w/c ratio
Gel space Ratio
ï Elasticity â conc. Cube subjected to compression and
deformations are measured using guages.
ï Creep â time dependent part of the strain resulting from
stress.
18. ï Shrinkage:
various aspects of volume changes in concrete
due to loss of moisture at different stages due to
different reasons.
Plastic Shrinkage
Drying Shrinkage
Autogeneous Shrinkage
Carbonation Shrinkage
19. Concrete Mix Design
ï For a concrete technologist, he should have a
minimum knowledge about CMD.
ï CMD can be defined as process of selecting suitable
ingredients of concrete and determining their
relative proportions with object of producing
concrete of certain minimum strength and durability
as economically as possible.
20.
21. CONCLUSION
ï Hence cement plays a key role over past 100 years,
when human started construction.
ï Cement is the most binding material used by human.
ï Cement has more compression and steel has more
tension.
ï No other material is present, which can replace
cement.
