We used TechSmithMoraeto conduct usability testing of the new WVU Libraries website. The first round of usability testing was internal (undergraduate student employees), from which we compiled and implemented suggested changes based on test results. This is the results of the second round of usability testing, with randomly selected undergraduate students, and focusing on testing the changes that were implemented.

From Loex-of-the-West 2010 conference program: "We need evidence of our value to justify the library budget, gain buy-in from faculty, and please accreditors, but the process of gathering meaningful evidence can be quite a challenge. After all, were you trained to do this kind of research? Neither were we, but the Assessment Coordinator that our university hired in preparation for a WASC visit guided us through our study design. Drawing on this relationship with a neutral expert outside the library, two business librarians at Golden Gate University designed an effective learning assessment of our instruction to our school’s intensive ESL program. We’ll use the valuable lessons we learned as a starting point for small-group exploration of some real-world assessment territory."

Terra incognita with no GPS: A case study approach to mapping assessment

Guess what -- you don't need to do learning assessment on a 45-minute one-shot presentation. Instruction librarians at Golden Gate University learned this and much more when an Assessment Coordinator arrived to help prepare our school for WASC. Oakleaf & Hinchliffe (2008) identify lack of coordination as one of the barriers librarians face in conducting assessment, and we found that having a smart, committed, and trustworthy coordinator made all the difference to our research project. We leveraged the Assessment Coordinator's expertise to stay focused on a project that produced valid and useful results from an in-depth learning assessment to measure student learning in an English Language Learners program. Our presentation focuses on the people connections that made this assessment work: between librarian collaborators, with students and instructors in the ELL program, and all the way upstairs to our University-wide assessment coordinator. We'll talk about how we designed our assessment and - phew - let go of post-instruction evaluation forms. Participants will get a fresh look at how information literacy assessment can benefit from upstairs-downstairs collaboration (floor plan not included)!

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
