Chapter 12 Reflection Charles Grandison Finney – an evangelistic Presbyterian minister who became the most influential revival leader of the 1820s and 1830s. Frederick Douglass – the greatest African American of all – and one of the most electrifying orators of his time, black or white – was Frederick Douglass. Born a slave in Maryland, Douglass escaped to Massachusetts in 1838, became an outspoken leader of anti-slavery sentiment. On his return to the United States in 1847, Douglass purchased his freedom from his Maryland owner and founded an antislavery newspaper, the North Star, in Rochester, New York. Douglass demanded for African Americans not only freedom but full social and economic social equality as well. Henry David Thoreau – leading Concord transcendentalist. Thoreau went even further in repudiating the repressive forces of society. He produced the ideas that individuals should work for self-realization by resisting pressures to conform to society’s expectations and responding instead to their instincts. Thoreau’s own efforts to free himself – immortalized in is most famous book, Walden – led him to build a small cabin in the Concord woods on the edge of Walden Pond, where he lived alone for two years as simply as he could. Horace Mann – the greatest of educational reformers was Horace Mann, the first secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education, which was established in 1837. To Mann, education was the only way to “counterwork this tendency to the domination of capital and the servility of labor.” He reorganized the Massachusetts school system, lengthened the academic year (to six months, doubled teachers’ salaries, enriched the curriculum, and introduced new methods of professional training for teachers. Joseph Smith - Mormonism began in upstate New York as a result of the efforts of Joseph Smith, a young, energetic, but economically unsuccessful man, who had spent most oh his twenty-four years moving restlessly through New England and the Northeast. In 1830, he published the Book of Mormon that told a story of an ancient and successful civilization in America, peopled by one of the lost tribes of Israel who had found their way to the New World centuries before Columbus. Shakers – made a redefinition of traditional sexuality and gender roles central to their society and even embraced the idea of a God who was not clearly male or female. Transcendentalism - idealistic philosophical and social movement that taught that divinity pervades all nature and humanity. Walt Whitman - the self-proclaimed poet of American democracy, was the son of a Lon Island carpenter and lived for many years roaming from place to place, doing odd jobs, while writing poetry. In his large body of poems, Whitman not only helped liberate verse from traditional, restrictive conventions but also helped express the soaring spirit of individualisms that characterized his age. Ralph Waldo Emerson – a Unitarian minister in his youth, Emerson left the church i ...

Jackson's Presidency: 1828-1836 Jacksonian Democracy expressed itself in many ways. One way was through reform movements. The years 1830 to 1850 are sometimes called the Age of American Reform. In this lecture we will seek to understand why so many people involved themselves with intentional reform movements over societal problems such as drinking, prostitution, and slavery). We will also consider what overall impact those reforms had on American history. It is not a stretch to purport that the shape of our modern institutions—schools, hospitals for the mentally ill, prisons, etc.—is a legacy of this period. Granted, the later Progressive movement of the early 20th century refined and brought government intervention into these movements, but they had their beginning during this time period. American Reform - Why Now? First, why? Why at this particular time in history? Why didn’t this reforming impulse come earlier? One answer might be that the era of Jackson (he was president from 1828 to 1836) brought on a greater participatory democracy than the country had ever seen. It is true that with the emergence of universal manhood suffrage a sense of greater participation in national life followed. Many even saw this greater egalitarianism as a natural continuation of the gains of the Revolution. · Participatory Democracy · Universal Manhood Suffrage · Maturing Enlightenment Philosophy Some have argued that the maturing of Enlightenment Philosophy during this time called for the rejection of things like the inevitability of poverty and other social ills. And since Enlightenment thought does not stress man’s sinfulness per se one can see how thoughtful reflection within the parameters of this philosophical system would tend to focus on man’s ability to improve more and more. Religious Impulse: Unitarianism (Liberalism) and Revivalism (Evangelicalism) A major impulse that drove American Reform was religious. Two particular expressions of faith informed these 19th century movements. One was liberalism, more specifically Unitarianism—a movement especially in New England that, among other things, denied the Trinity and man’s sinfulness. The other was Evangelicalism - more specifically Revivalism born of what is called the 2nd Great Awakening—which had its own departures from orthodoxy. First let’s look at Unitarianism. A New England minister named William Ellery Channing (1780-1742) was the leading Unitarian of his day. He stressed in his preaching (and this is a common tenet of Unitarianism) man is innately good. He said that the purpose of Christianity was “the perfection of human nature.” Central to this view is a denial of original sin. If man is not a sinner and he is naturally good, then if follows that he is perfectible. Many Unitarians, especially in New England, got involved in reform movement based on this premise of man’s perfectibility. Unitarianism (a form of liberalism) · New England · Denial of Trinity · Wil ...

A Transgenic animal is one that carries a foreign gene that has been deliberately inserted into its genome. The foreign gene are inserted into the germ line of the animal, so it can be transmitted to the progeny. Transgenic animals are animals that are genetically altered to have traits that mimic symptoms of specific human pathologies. They provide genetic model of various human disease which are important in understanding disease and development of new target.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
