I do NOT teach any curriculum and methods courses in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics
I AM a student of instructional design and child-centered education
I AM a dean who wants his graduates to be highly qualified AND employed
I AM a father of four who believes very strongly in the integration of curriculum and the power it holds for my children’s education.,[object Object]
Rising Above the Gathering Storm (2005) Rising Above the Gathering Storm, Revisited: Rapidly Approaching Category Five (2010)  1746 – The birth of Pestalozzi Swiss educator who advocated for investigation, experimentation, and hands-on learning in science 1862 – The Morrill Act Supported vocational education, but also INTEGRATED academic areas 1957 – SPUTNIK 1973 – USMES (Unified Science and Mathematics for Elementary Schools) Designed to integrate subjects through real, practical, local projects What is the history of STEM?
Standards-based Inquiry-based Scaffolded range of activities, from structured and guided to open inquiry Problem-based learning Performance-based teaching and learning Utilizes UbD (Understanding by Design) Identify Desired Results, Consider Assessment Evidence, Formulate Learning Plan What do we know about good STEM curriculum?
Guarantees the 5E’s Engagement Exploration Explanation Elaboration Evaluation Infuses integration of technology—as content, as a means of delivery, and as a means of extension for students  STEM, not ST…..but possibly STEAM What  ELS E do we know?
We recognized the need for reform in Lutheran schools, the largest protestant P-12 school system in the world. We facilitated conversations among exceptional S, T, E, M teachers If you could teach STEM any way you wanted, how would you do it? We wrote a few grants $25,000 in seed money over two years $85,000 for precollege programming for underserved middle school students $20,000 to extend the programming to other areas What did we do?
We piloted the STEM Camp Summer, 2009 Water Park Science CSI: Apprentice and Lead Investigator (Grades 3-8) Summer, 2010 CSI Freaky Formulas Product Testing: Unwrapped Summer, 2011 CSI: The Environment Crazy Concoctions Marvelous Machine: The Owner’s Manual What ELSE did we do?
Word of mouth expansion 2009	Milwaukee 2010	Milwaukee, Chicago 2011	Milwaukee, Chicago, Ft. Wayne, Tainan Showcase for teachers’                             creativity and collaboration Opportunity for education students (undergraduate and post-baccalaureate)           to learn from the masters in the field Direct service to over 200 elementary and middle-school students,                                                               70% of whom are currently underrepresented in higher education What benefits has STEM provided?

  • 10. We recognized the need for reform in Lutheran schools, the largest protestant P-12 school system in the world. We facilitated conversations among exceptional S, T, E, M teachers If you could teach STEM any way you wanted, how would you do it? We wrote a few grants $25,000 in seed money over two years $85,000 for precollege programming for underserved middle school students $20,000 to extend the programming to other areas What did we do?
