Welcome to Using Graphic novels in the Classroom for teachers and librariansIn this short workshop, I will present what graphic novels are and aren’t, why use them, theoretical aspects of GNs, multiliteracy aspects, and how to use them. They aren’t just comics but full length books, tell a complete story, with images and textWritten for all age groups Misconception that they are for adult/mature audiences although some areVery popular with adolescents and youth
Popularity/ students are already reading them Ease of readingFiction and nonfictionThey are fun!
Example of “New Text” Have many elements worthy of academic/classroom study:Study genre itselfNatural or teacher directed affinity groupsExamine literary elements: characters, plots, symbols, artwork , text-image relations, critical literacy
Have elements of semiotic systems: linguistic, auditory (sound words like …) gestural, visual, spatial Can study/critique the codes/conventions/meanings:Codes: Color, texture, lines, shapes, form, shadow How these codes combine thru balanceLayout (how your eye is attracted to something or focuses on somethingAnd vectorality (eye is led thru an image) all this adds up to meaning by the reader
In your folder are several handouts, we will try to do several depending on time left Also resources page
