Widgets are small, simple applications that perform single tasks well. Their history began in 2003 with Konfabulator releasing applets for OSX and Windows. Major tech companies like Apple, Google, Yahoo, Facebook and Microsoft then incorporated widgets into their desktop platforms between 2004-2008 to allow users to customize their experience with mini-applications.
