Home Time Management Step 1: Identify Major Problems
If you're a nontraditional student getting your home time management under control is going to be The Key to succeeding in college.
Spend only a very short amount of time and on step 1 and only identify major problems. There are several reasons for this:
You Can Get Stuck In a Rut While Trying To Identify and List Out All Your Problems
It is so easy to get stuck into a rut which, of course, prevents you from reaching the last step… implementing action… and seeing real and lasting change occur.
It Can Be Really Depressing to Look at Everything Wrong
If you were to sit and try to list out all your problem areas at one time it would likely lead to you feeling overwhelmed, depressed, and... too soon... giving up.
Knowing All Your Problems Isn't Even Necessary
It's not going to help you RIGHT NOW to realize that you haven't dusted the tops of the cabinets… well… ever.
You Really Only Need to Know 1-3 Major Problems… The Little Ones Can Wait
There are major and minor problems in your life and fixing the major ones first will really change your life. And you already know what they are.
This Is Only a Very Small Part of Solving the Problems
Still another reason for not spending much time on this step is because it really is only a very small part of the solution. Don't get me wrong… it IS important… but not so important that you should take more than just a few minutes on it.
Nothing Can Be Solved Until Some Action is Implemented
Finally, we get to the major reason for being brief in this area which is so that you can get through the other 3 steps and into the last one which is ACTION. Nothing, nothing, nothing happens without action.

4. There are several reasons for this:
***You can get stuck in a rut while trying to identify and list out all your problems
***It can be really depressing to look at everything wrong
***Knowing all your problems isn't even necessary
***You really only need to know 1-3 major problems… the little ones can wait
***This is only the first step in getting rid of those problems
***Nothing can be solved until some action is implemented
Now let's talk briefly about each of these.

Identify and List Out All Your Problems
which, of course, prevents
It is so easy to get stuck into a rut
you from reaching the last step… implementing action… and
seeing real and lasting change occur.
I've helped people see that they don't need to spend 3 weeks
figuring out all their problems right down to the bathroom
closet needing to be vacuumed.

6. Also, when you're brief in this step then you
tend to focus on only the most important areas
that need changed.

7. It Can Be Really Depressing to Look at
Everything Wrong
If you were to sit and try to list out all your problem
areas at one time it would likely lead to you feeling
overwhelmed, depressed, and... too soon... giving
up.
Again, be quick and pick just a few that are at the
top of your mind.

8. Knowing All Your Problems Isn't Even Necessary
It's not going to help you RIGHT NOW to realize that you haven't
dusted the tops of the cabinets… well… ever.
It's also not going to help you to nitpick and focus on problems that
won't really impact your life… positively or negatively.
If you're brief in this step you don't have time to go that deep.
You'll focus on working on what bothers you right now.

9. You Really Only Need to Know 1-3 Major
Problems… The Little Ones Can Wait
There are major and minor problems in your life and
fixing the major ones first will really change your life.
And you already know what they are.

10. For instance, do you really struggle with not being prepared at
mealtimes? Do you end up fixing a lot of last-minute meals that you're
not proud of?
Do you really need to get your kids helping out cleaning the house?
Doing their own laundry?
Do you need to clean your house better but don't feel you have the
time or energy?
Would you love to have the night off from cooking even just once in a
while?
Focus on getting these areas… one at a time, if needed… under
control and your life will be so much easier.

11. This Is Only a Very Small Part of Solving the
Problems
Still another reason for not spending much time on this step is
because it really is only a very small part of the solution.
Don't get me wrong… it IS important… but not so important that
you should take more than just a few minutes on it.
It bears repeating… you should know your major problem areas
and I'd bet you know them right off the top of your head.

12. Nothing Can Be Solved Until Some Action is
Implemented
for being brief in this area
Finally, we get to the major reason
which is so that you can get through the other 3 steps and into the
last one which is ACTION.
Nothing, nothing, nothing happens without action.
But, you need to get through these first 4 steps before you even
get to action.
