5 Things That Can Cause Problems for Nontraditional College Students
If nontraditional college students are going to be successful they must get their home time management under control. While there are many things that can cause problems for them, here I'm going to address 5 that are the easiest to get under control.
Mealtime Madness
This is when you're still undecided about what's for dinner when it is near... or worse, already... dinner time. You may be walking through the grocery store aimlessly, peering into others' baskets, even stopping someone and asking them what sounds good.
Laundry Piling Up
This is when instead of tackling laundry for half an hour per day you let it pile up until you get around to it on Saturday (or whatever day). This not only causes you to be tethered to the house but can really mess up your concentration.
A Cluttered Home
For many people… myself included… clutter is very distracting. I found it much more difficult to get into the zone when the room I was studying in was messy... even if I was studying outside on the screened-in porch.
Not Using Chunks of Time Wisely
One way you could take care of the clutter is to use chunks of time wisely. If you were to spend 15 minutes each day cleaning your study room, it would get cleaned... I don't care how messy it is.
Not Planning Effectively
Let's face it... almost all problems with home time management can be boiled down to lack of planning. Conversely, if you plan correctly you have time to study, complete projects, write research papers, and… in general… do everything it takes to succeed in college.

2. If nontraditional college students are going to be successful they must get their home
time management under control.
While there are many things that can cause problems for them, here I'm going to
address 5 that are the easiest to get under control.
These problem areas include:
***Mealtime Madness
***Laundry Piling Up
***A Cluttered Home
***Not Using Chunks of Time Wisely
***Not Planning Effectively
Now, let's just touch lightly on each of these areas.

3. Mealtime Madness
about what's for dinner when it
This is when you're still undecided
is near... or worse, already... dinner time.
You may be walking through the grocery store aimlessly, peering
into others' baskets, even stopping someone and asking them what
sounds good (I promise you I did this many years ago).

4. Yep, I've done it and I've seen others do it.
You can recognize them by their stance in the middle
of the store tapping a finger against their chin or lips.
Not getting mealtimes under control can almost
guarantee that you'll have these kind of days.

5. Laundry Piling Up
This is when instead of tackling laundry for half an
hour per day you let it pile up until you get around to
it on Saturday (or whatever day).
This not only causes you to be tethered to the house
but can really mess up your concentration.

6. When I was in college and graduate school I used to plan my
Saturdays for catching up on my studying.
If I were to have to be constantly interrupted by putting clothes in
the washer, switching them to the dryer, and laying them out on
my bed so they wouldn't wrinkle it would have totally messed
with my being able to get into "The Zone"... that wonderful mental
mode where everything not only goes in but stays in.
Not to mention seeing the pile growing and knowing that I'd have
that to look forward to when I finished studying... well, it just
wouldn't have set well with my being able to study like I needed.

7. A Cluttered Home
For many people… myself included… clutter is
very distracting.
I found it much more difficult to get into the zone
when the room I was studying in was messy... even
if I was studying outside on the screened-in porch.

8. It didn't take me long to discover this.
While I've heard many college students...
especially nontraditional students... comment
that they just learned to ignore the mess, I
believe that it's still a distraction to them and
they'd probably get more studying accomplished
if they took care of this problem.

9. Not Using Chunks of Time Wisely
One way you could take care of the clutter is to use chunks of time wisely.
If you were to spend 15 minutes each day cleaning your study room, it would
get cleaned... I don't care how messy it is.
You could then take that time and use it for something else... say, creating flash
cards which could be used during down times like waiting at lights, waiting in
line at the grocery store, or any other situation when you only have a couple of
minutes.

10. Make every minute count.
Whole hours, days, weeks, months, years, and
decades are made up of smaller chunks of time...
such as the minute... which too often we see as too
small of a piece of time to put to good use.

11. Not Planning Effectively
Let's face it... almost all problems with home time management can be
boiled down to lack of planning.
Conversely, if you plan correctly you have time to study, complete
projects, write research papers, and… in general… do everything it takes to
succeed in college.
Planning effectively requires you to take into account all important areas of
your life... menu planning, cooking, cleaning, laundry, and even spending
time with your family, friends and yourself.
