- What constitutes Cloud Computing?Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is a model for provisioning hardware (compute, storage, networking, etc...) to the end user where management of the underlying fabric is controlled by the provider, but the end user maintains control of the operating system and applications installed within. This system usually includes a metered-byuse cost model and allows the end user to expand/contract their use of the infrastructure as needed, usually via self-service portals. Examples include: FastHosts, Go Daddy, Rackspace, Amazon EC2, vCloud Express Services (e.g., BlueLock, Hosting.Com, Melboure IT, Terremark), private clouds deployed/managed by IT as service to business units (internalIT’s end-customers), Azure Service with the VM RolePlatform as a Service(PaaS) is a model for delivering complete development platforms as a cloud service. PaaS offerings facilitate development, testing, deployment and on-going maintenance of applications without the cost of buying the underlying infrastructure and software environments. - Now that we have discussed the Cloud Computing parts, lets discuss what the private cloud is and how it plays into Cloud Computing and IT as a Service.Private clouds are one way to consume cloud computing. Within a private cloud you can deliver Infrastructure as a Service either built by you the customer, or delivered via a service provider. (Click)You can also deliver Platform as a Service either through buying and deploying an appliance yourself, or delivered through a Service Provider.(Click)Today, we are going to concentrate in private clouds that deliver Infrastructure as a Service.
- Now, what is the difference between highly virtualized computing and a private cloud.Highly virtualized computing gives you the benefits of increased utilization of your servers, power savings, and reduced server footprint. We are familiar with these as they are in datacenters today. However, this does not equal the private cloud.A Private cloud provides all of those benefits plus highly integrated and automated management, scalable and elastic platforms, and self service.Highly Automated – No longer do IT personnel need to worry about keeping software up to dateSelf-Service– Providing self-service IT infrastructure to business units and departments with an SLA. This forces service-level discussion and removes the burden to procure, provision and manage infrastructure on a per application, ad-hoc basisScalable and Elastic – Enabling faster delivery of capacity when resource needs change. In addition, private clouds can deliver not only IaaS, they can deliver PaaS.
- Infrastructure as a Service is an evolution in the way business will consume IT. There are a number of ways that IaaS improves on the way infrastructure is delivered todayUtilization – Today’s infrastructure must be designed for the worst case scenario of high demand. The end result is the low utilization of servers. With IaaS, utilization increases to take better advantage of the investment in hardware. Automation – Today’s infrastructure has little to no automation. One of the key tenets of IaaS is high automation which lays the groundwork for things like self service.Server/User Ratio – In today’s infrastructure each IT administrator can manage fewer servers due to the lack of automation and other advances. The program ensures customers can work with a wide range of hosted partners around the world to consume infrastructure as a service and benefit from the additional scale and capacity that hosters can provide.The program includes more than 70 service providers around the world who offer infrastructure as a finished, fully-hosted service built on Microsoft’s technology.
