that isn’t as well known is Nian (year)
• In China the colour red means happiness
• On the night of the Chinese New Year they
like to wear the colour red aswell
3. Nien the Monster
Long ago there was a legand that said that a
fierce monster called Nien lived in China
Every night before Chinese New Year he would
creep into the villagers houses and eat them.
There lived an old wise man in a village. He
thought because the people paniced the
monster ate them. The old man asked people to
come together and frighten the monster by
beating drums, burning bamboo, and lighting
fireworks to make loud noises to keep it away.
When he told people about the idea, everybody
agreed.
4. o On a freezing cold night, the monster,
Nien, came again. When he opened his
mouth the frightning noises started. Nien
was forced to stay away because of the
terrible noises. The monster didn’t stop
running until he fell down with tiredness.
Then people jumped up and killed the
monster. And that was the end of the
Chinese monster.
5. The legand of the Dragon
In ancient Chinese times the dragon was regarded as the
most important animal ever.
As imagined by the Chinese he had the head of a camel,
the horns of a deer, with firey eyes and a long beard.
Legand tells us it first appeared in the sky as a heir to the
throne was born.
The dragon is the symbol of good fortune.

The lantern festival is one of the most
important Chinese Festival
The festival stated 2,000 years ago
The monks lit the Lanterns to show
respect to Buddha
The emperor ordered that everyone
should light lanterns on the fifteenth day
of the new year.
