11. When faced with inappropriate behaviour the students are taught the strategy of using their WITS…. The emphasis in this strategy is to say an “I” statement first and assert that they do not like the behaviour being presented to them. W = walk away I = ignore it T = tell someone S = say an “I” statement. Behaviour management

Editor's Notes
Welcome everyone Aubrey…karakia
2 parts to tonite’s meeting Info then goal sharing
We view you and your child as the critical sides of the triangle. Triangle being a strong shape that supports all sides… We are at school early each day for informal contact or after school as well, but if you require our undivided attention, it is best to ring and make a time with us so we can work around duties etc. We will send newsletters home when necessary as well.
Team…together everyone achieves more. Welcome to new syndicate members…familiar to Awapuni families because of work in school up till now Support staff to support learning in each class
Short and sweet and to the point…
The “have to’s”
The “want to’s”… Growing independence of your children…LOL one day they question you… we pay the price later! Safe schools basis of making our core values real How do we make them responsible for own learning…assessing own performance against themselves…not against others…that’s for us as professionals and the benchmarks we have eg. reading at age level Thinking into higher levels of thinking…habits of mind…OHT…Blooms taxonomy OHT…shift from transmission by teacher to inquiry by learners…not what you know but where do you get it…future literacies – text messaging???? …big change from our time at school…futurist thinking…OHT’s from Dryden book…CHANGE is one thing that will not change All learners…me degree…Kaye post grad Masters…
We want to uphold our school charter goal in teaching thinking. HOTS – 3 level guides, inquiry learning, thinkers keys, graphic organisers, Now… Habits of Mind – or Intelligent behaviours. Show OHT about learners and change
Habits of Mind star Book = continuous learning… then clockwise Persisting, managing impulsivity (self control), listening, thinking flexibly, thinking about thinking, striving for accuracy, questioning / problem posing, applying past knowledge, communicating with clarity (e.g. not allowed to use “awesome” in writing), gathering data (using 5 senses), create/imagine/innovate, respond with wonderment, taking responsible risks, finding humour, thinking interdependently (cooperative learning fits in well here)
Setting up of class at beginning of year…negotiation….assertive discipline…based on what to do rather than what not to do…change in language over the years from my experience… Emotional safety main goal of school..happy kids can learn…unhappy kids won’t…teachers talk about control theory…quality world of children…5 requirements (survival, fun, love, belonging, power, freedom, ..will get them positively or negatively – ) …Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
What can I do…assertiveness…empowering…self advocacy…social justice Conflict resolution big part in this…time to do it in DP time
Vertically composed classes…not up or down perception as is in some schools…mix “em up…prepares them for later schooling Team approach to all activities PE important and is reflected in daily activities. new requirements for an hour of physical activity per day..PD later this year
Library - you need to go and register children at Town Library…reading books of own choice for leisure and pleasure is so important www.awapuni.schoolzone.net.nz/mydesktop Logon/pwd – secure, filtered internet access + email We will be using this at school and students can access websites we send them to at home…personal webpage as well
Daily maths in groups with students of similar need...rotation occurs Grids daily…you can support your child by assisting them to learn tables at home…if this is the one of 3 things you do, it will benefit your child immensely
TORCH…OHT to show thermometer…inferential comprehension…phenomena of students being able to decode but not understand
PIRLS = Chn MUST choose own books to read Library at school Town Library – get cards
Writing focus whole school Jeanie Cameo writing – success last year PD for teachers Big mismatch between reading ability and writing ability…should be closer… Spelling..!!! No longer lists and lists of words…20 ph numbers …can you remember ph nos if have no connection or meaning to you? Heather
PFA main assessment that you will see…take time to talk to children about it…SLC skills should come to the fore here…yours and the child’s…been doing it for a few years now…. Testing…snapshots of where children are nationally…pre/post testing for diagnostic purposes
EEEK!!! The big scarey thing will be no more…no more battlegrounds with these senior students If these 3 things are done well that is all you need to do to support your child…play games with them instead of the nagging…simple game with a pack of cards SHOW…results will be seen in their school work…spelling tests on Fridays…leads to improved accuracy in writing…tables so they can concentrate on the strategy using…life long readers No punitive measures now in place for homework Buy books…example…internet savvy…tutorials on internet..talk to them…”THE BEST THING WE CAN SPEND ON CHILDREN IS TIME” – thank you Mr. Warehouse!!! Homework centre option…
Other stuff.. Invitation to come and meet us on a more personal basis…look at your child’s personal learning plan with their goals for their learning year…informal…10 minutes…come to classroom between given hours…before school…after school one evening…came from the goals set at SLC and the very short time given to work on it…this is more long range and will be revisited during the year…feedback from you and the teacher as well as self assessment Trying to coordinate mother/daughter evening…from Health and PE community consultation Reading for mileage…give name to teachers Open season on head lice…t-tree oil as insecticide…squirter bottle Swimming-we are addressing the identified national need to teach children how to swim. The school has contracted a swim coach for all levels of the school. Many of the Senior Syndicate students have come to school without their togs. We require a note from you if they are not allowed to swim. School website – updated
