1. Human hearing. What are sound waves? Scientists use microphones to detect animal sounds. If a microphone is attached to an oscilloscope, you can see a representation of sound wave that the animal produces. By looking at the wave (or trace) on the oscilloscope screen, scientists can work out the intensity an pitch of the sound. J G.

2. Dolphin/Whale hearing range. What is a dolphin or whales hearing range? Animals use sounds to communicate, to warn other animals of danger, to try and stop others entering their territory, to win a mate, or to hunt. Dolphins and whales have voices, but it's a lot different from most other mammals. The limited visibility under water made sounds and hearing very important for them. The sounds of the whales are not produced with their mouth/beak but only inside their blow-hole. They also use frequencies that reach far beyond our hearing capabilities.
