Personal Relevance… Personal Relevance
What I Plan To Do… I plan to take you back a century or two to show how this legendary sport was started. After that I will analyze how people treated the sport back then compared to how they do today and what possible factors caused that.

My SGP Powerpoint 1

Editor's Notes

  1. This topic is relevant to me because I grew up with this sport and had the opportunity to watch it grow for nearly two decades.I have always heard the phrase, “baseball isn’t what it used to be,” or that “football is the new pastime.” What happened here? (and improbably preaching to the wrong choir since there isn’t one baseball player in the room) How did this sport go from being on the very top, to struggling in the top 3. This is what I’m going to investigate, this is what I’m going to get answers for.
  2. During the late 1700s, the English had developed a loosely-ruled game that everyone followed called Rounders. The game was believed to be an early version of baseball, developed in Europe. There were two teams that were capable of being 5 to 15 players on each team. The biggest difference compared to baseball was that there was only 2 innings that were played and no recorded outs were kept. Instead of outs, everyone from the team bats once until the lineup is done. The very… painful difference was that in these times, you were allowed to be hit by the ball to be out. (Yes people could be called out but the outs did not end the inning). Rounders is still alive and is considered a popular sport in England.
  3. This game originated from the original concept of Rounders. The game made it over seas into the United States with a changed name and slightly altered rules. The game played “peg-outs” (which meant if you got hit with the ball you were out). The game also didn’t have an inning limit, the object of the game was to score 100 talleys. 1 talley = rounding the bases once.
  4. Alexander Cartwright was considered the father of baseball because he was the one who developed the first set of official rules for the game of “baseball”. He also was essentially the first person to organize a baseball team called the New York Knickbockers”. The first set of the rules where entered in September during the year 1845.
  5. Before Cartwright was recognized as the creator of baseball. Abner Doubleday was known to be the creator for a considerably long time. The claim was that Doubleday had created the rules nearly 5 years before Cartwright was able to publish his own. Doubleday devised these rules in the year 1839 at Cooperstown, New York. Where the baseball hall of fame is located. There is a lot of controversy to who started this pastime but the truth is that nobody really knows. There were games said to be similar to the game but they had weird names such as “Rochester and Geneso,” during the 1820s.
  6. Alexander Cartwright’s team played many interleague games stretching from October 6 1845 (the first game) all the way to June the next year. The first official game was ready to be played. This game took place at the Elysian Fields, and this was considered the birthplace of baseball. Cartwright was confident from all the experience the team was getting from playing all of their other games. When they played, however, their team got destroyed 23 – 1. Sad story.
  7. A man named Stephen Clark was responsible for the construction of the Cooperstown Hall of Fame most of us are familiar with. Clark was disappointed from what he saw become his home in the 1930s. The Great Depression basically destroyed the town, and his own background was close to bankruptcy. It was said at that time that Abner Doubleday was the one responsible for creating baseball, in that very town. Clark saw it was a wonderful opportunity to save the town of Cooperstown and build a tourist attraction for it. A baseball museum, the legendary hall of fame. His idea was approved from the Presidents from each league of baseball and was soon constructing it.
  8. This Slide Yet to be Finished.
  9. Yes many kids do participate in a lot of activities including sports. They can be at practice for an average of 2 hours, but studies show that they are active for only around 45 of those minutes. This is supposedly caused for waiting your turn in line and just standing around or just listening to instruction. Now we all know the attention span of young kids. It isn’t that very long so as a result, they begin to lose interest in what they are doing. “It is recommended that children are active for about 60 minutes per day,” which is not being fulfilled by these practices, which is a problem. I will be addressing that problem in my application.
  10. A study conducted by an Australian scientist suggests that kids who are physically active on a day by day basis do essentially better in class. Don’t be confused by the fact that not participating lowers your grade. Instead it simply does nothing for you. Everyone should be active though because it does more than keep you alert in school. It leads a healthy lifestyle.
