Question by Little Maiden: Do older people like it when younger kids usedo
stuff from when they were kids?
Like say if you are 60, would you like it that an 8 year old was listening to a record player,
and that she liked it better than CD‘s?
Or like if you are in late 20′s-early 30′s, would you take comfort(I don‘t really know how
else to put it) in the fact that that a 14 year old was playing the original Nintendo, or
Atari?
Or would either in this instance not like it, and think of it as a reminder of your age?
This question is aimed at people who are from a different generation, so if you wouldn‘t
mind answering, I would really appreciate it. You don‘t have to be from either of these age
groups, and you don‘t have to use a recordplayer or Atari for an example.
Thank you!
Best answer:
Answer by Benjamin
Because it makes them feel like there IS a generational bridge between the two. It makes
them feel like what they liked or did, is important because its still around. It‘s inherent in
all humans, i think. People want to see the next generation being in some way, like they
were. It makes them feel like what they enjoyed, really was a good, important thing.

Question by SS<3: Where do i hook up the remote wireless, remote wire for
my car audio?
I know where it goes on the AMP, however i don‘t know where to hook it up on the other
end.
My head unit DOES have a dark blue wire (assumed to be rem.) but when i hook it up to
that… i get nothing.
I did plug it into the red wire on the back of the cigarette lighter, but the cant be the
proper way, and this drains my battery.
So where do Car Audio shops usually hook this wire up?
Best answer:
Answer by designkidcom
It‘ll typically get wired onto a blue with white stripe wire coming off of the deck. If that
wire isn‘t present you‘re next option is going to be anything that runs as an accessory. So,
if your cigarette lighter isn‘t constantly on then that will be fine. Otherwise, the next best
option is typically at the ignition harness.

We are finishing our basement and the speaker wires have already been put in place for
the rear speakers, but not the front speakers. I have been told the length of the speaker
wires should all be the same so that the sound arrives at the speakers at the same time. Is
this true? If so, i sure hope the contractors measured how much was used on the other
side. Thanks for the help in advance.

Answer by Daniel K
That myth has been going around for years. Please, please do not worry about it. Whoever
started that myth never studied audio engineering.
Speaker wires need to be as short as possible and of a proper guage (probably 16 guage or
bigger).

Question by parisblue1016: How to hook up an active subwoofer to a
receiver with a speaker wire subwoofer out.?
I have a Philips HTS3151D with a dedicated subwoofer out but it‘s a speaker wire only. I
just bought a Sony SA W3000 Subwoofer and was wondering how i would hook it up.
Best answer:
Answer by Jonathan Stevens
First I got to say you have a good view in home stereo equipment. Sony is one of the best
companies out there in audio digital coding. So here‘s your answer:
The specs on the Sony website say that it has a ―line in‖ type plug. This could SADLY be a
variety of things. (Now, I may be new on Yahoo, but I have had 4+ years experience with
professional audio recording.) From what I can see, the best option would be to look for a
sub with matching wire inputs, or get a receiver/amp with line outputs. The last option is
DIY, but if you have time you can solder a line connector (RadioShack) to set of wire
outputs from your amp. It would look like this:
ground (rod part) > black wire
^<- line plug (mono) ->hot (tip of plug) > red wire
I am not sure if you are good with electronics, but that‘s the best I can do. Happy
installing! Feel free to ask me any questions you have! I can find you a DIY page or draw a
MSFT Paint picture to clarify if needed.

Question by Grace Tripp: Whats the difference between an amplified tube
subwoofer and an amplified low profile subwoofer?
I‘m more inclined to get a low profile amplified subwoofer, but I‘m doing my research
and I‘m wondering, what hits harder? A low profile 8 inch subwoofer with 1500 watts or
an 8 inch tube subwoofer with 400 watts? And Why?
Best answer:
Answer by Doug
Tubes are actual tubes. They usually are all-inclusive meaning they come with the sub,
wiring and amp. Bass tubes, in a small environment (like a truck cab) sound
smooth/clean and help fill in the bottom-end of music…but they don‘t really hit. A good
shallow-mount sub and a good amp will definitely give you more bass than a bass tube.

Question by thedude22: How do I hook up my surround sound receiver to
my TV using the TV as audio, not the surround sound speake?
I want to use my surround sound receiver without the surround sound speakers. I
basically want to use the receiver as a DVD player for my room, but the surround sound
speakers would be a bit much. Therefore, I want to use the TV as audio. Is there a way to
do this?
Best answer:
Answer by PoohBearPenguin
If this DVD player of yours has a set of red/white stereo audio outputs, simply connect
those to your TV along with the video cable.
If your DVD player doesn‘t have audio outputs, then you‘ll have to get a new DVD player.
This lack of flexibility is why I hate those ―home theater in a box‖ kits so much. They may
be cheap, but they often just come with a DVD player that has a surround sound decoder
inside of it, and no additional inputs or outputs that a real surround receiver would have.

I‘m about to get the new 21.5 inch imac and i want to play music from my imac through
my surround sound system and since the speakers on the imac are so good, is there
anyway i can get audio to come out of the internal and still come out the 3.5mm
headphone jack to m surround sound system?
Best answer:
Answer by dreaminducedhaze
I‘m confused, you say ―surround sound‖ but then 3.5mm… you‘ll basically never see a
3.5mm input jack on a theater system. Maybe a computer speaker system, but even then
in order to actually get surround sound you need to hook to all the different ins (front,
rear, side, sub) otherwise you‘re just getting simulated surround (the same sound out of
the front and back speakers). Anyhow, there‘s no possible way that the built in iMac
speakers compare to even a crappy home theater system, so I personally say ―don‘t‖ even
try. Aside from that you‘ll need to give us your sound system‘s make and model for us to
be able to help.

Visitors can enjoy two levels from which to view the pandas, several areas where they may
be just inches away from the bears, separated only by glass, and the new Clint Fields
Conservation Plaza, where they can learn more about efforts to save pandas and their
habitat through the stories of real people here and in China. At the Plaza‘s Decision
Stations, people can get a sense of the complexity of conservation choices by watching
videos about wildlife-people dilemmas and deciding which actions to take. Other features
at the Plaza include a topographic map of the mountains of central China and exhibits
about alternative economic activities to reduce habitat destruction. Portraits of villagers,
scientists, park rangers, and others, with the real tools of their conservation work, will be
highlighted. Multimedia displays of photos, video, and audio will give visitors a sense of
place, introducing them to the sights and sounds of China‘s wilds.

Question by adrian R: can a virus make a fake desktop and directory and
user?
i think i have liser.exe but i looked it up and its virut or something…….i keep killing the
fake processes with taskmgr and i searched for recently modified files, i keep finding
temp files and one exe file called msa that plays an audio ad using an invisible internet
explorer……well yesterday i went all out and got rid of the infections several times and
kept rebooting, at first it changed the registry so i cant use exe files but i went around it
with ―open with‖ then it got smart and didnt let me do that with any antivirus ,system
tools, and msi or exe installers of antivirus progs…..now on my last reboot i think it made
a virtual machine,my desktop is green now and missing many icons and files but if i do a
search it says its still there under user……so how can it log me into fake user1,2,or 3 also i
can no longer boot safe mode…..and the virut or win32blahblah removers from diff sites
wont work, and the symantec one needs to be run in safe mode……also i did use many
antiviruses and reg cleaners, and on the last boot it asked to activate windows
and i did manage to get unlocker and current ports, and there is activity in port 80

University of Maryland Introduces iPads as Part of

University of Maryland Introduces iPads as Part of Mobility Initiative
Image by University of Maryland Press Releases
COLLEGE PARK, Md – As further demonstration of the university‘s strong commitment
to new educational technologies and innovation across diverse media, all 75 students
enrolled in the University of Maryland‘s newly-launched Digital Cultures and Creativity
(DCC) living and learning program within the Honors College were given an Apple iPad
at the start of the fall semester (above – Terp Freshman Victoria Lai receives her new
iPad from OIT‘s Michael Hooker).
This device will be fully integrated into the program‘s curriculum, where it will serve as
the basis for content delivery and instruction. Students will also have the opportunity to
learn to develop their own applications for the iPad. The devices were handed out in late
August when students move onto campus. This latest action is part of the university‘s
Mobility Initiative, a pilot program studying whether mobile technology enhances the
student education experience.
"DCC is thrilled to be joining the university‘s innovative Mobility Initiative," said Dr.
Matthew Kirschenbaum, Associate Professor of English and Director of Digital Cultures
and Creativity. Kirschenbaum adds, "Many of DCC‘s students are digital natives who will
come to campus already having programmed their own applications, made their own
electronic music and art, or designed their own interactive media. They will use their
iPads in the context of a curriculum that immerses them in the surprisingly long and
complex history of thought behind today‘s new media devices. They will learn to develop
new content for the platform, as well as use it to consume rich media integral to their
education."
19. DCC‘s faculty includes Associate Professor of Computer Science and former director of
the University of Maryland‘s Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory Ben Bederson,
who has already developed applications for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.
For nearly two years, the University of Maryland has been studying whether
incorporating mobile technology enhances the student educational experience.
Sponsored by the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost,
the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, and the Office of Information Technology, the
Mobility Initiative began in fall 2008. During its two years of existence, 280 freshmen in
the Banneker/Key Scholarship and Maryland Incentive Awards programs have been
given either an iPhone or iPod touch to test inside and outside of class.
In addition to the 75 DCC students who received an Apple iPad in the fall, approximately
160 new freshmen in the Banneker/Key Scholarship and Maryland Incentive Awards
programs were given either an iPhone or iPod touch devices – bringing the number of
student pilot participants to approximately 515.
During the initiative‘s first year, more than 130 student participants used the mobile
devices to substitute for student response devices (also known as clickers) in class, to
access the mobile versions of the university‘s portal and learning management system,
and to participate in varied special activities, such as research scavenger hunts.
For its second year, the pilot study expanded to include additional students, professors,
and learning opportunities. New efforts were undertaken to support faculty in their
efforts to incorporate mobile learning into their courses, including offering a set of iPod
touch devices that can be loaned out to students in a course to support specific learning
activities.
Additionally, an Office of Information Technology (OIT) and Center for Teaching
Excellence (CTE) partnership gives participants in the CTE‘s Summer Institute for
New(er) Technologies the opportunity to explore integrating mobile learning activities
into their courses with support from OIT.
"Four fall courses and five spring courses have been part of these efforts," said Ellen Yu
Borkowski, Director of Academic Support in the Office of Information Technology. "Some
of the mobile learning activities in these courses include recording assessments of high
school PE teachers, recording use of media as part of an international research study,
20. collecting and distributing interpretations of poetry, and using the devices‘ recording and
playback features in support of learning foreign languages. OIT and the CTE plan to
continue this partnership into the Mobility Initiative‘s third year," Borkowski said.
Additionally, for the spring 2010 semester, a new upper-level computer science offering
was introduced to the university‘s curriculum. The new course, "CMSC498I: Selected
Topics in Computer Science: Programming the iPhone," covers topics such as iPhone
development tools and fundamentals; user interface design; media considerations related
to gaming, audio, and video; and usability and quality assessment. As part of the course,
students are developing new mobile applications for the iPhone, specifically focusing on
ones that can be deployed and used across the university as part of Maryland‘s overall
efforts to support mobile devices on campus.
Digital Cultures and Creativity is sponsored by the College of Arts and Humanities, with
co-sponsorship from the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities, the
Department of Computer Science, and the College of Information Studies. Learn more
