The right camping equipments for hiker
2008 West Pass Hunter Campsite
by HOSTMEI R on NOVEMBER 30, 2011

2008 West Pass Hunter Campsite

Volunteer Robin Vroegop was drawn for the first time for participation in the three-and-
a-half day 2008 Sambar Deer Quota Hunt on SVNWR. She carefully planned her food
and gear, attempting to pack lightly and strike a balance between comfort and
convenience, and a back-breaking gear portage over the beach. For the most part, she
accomplished her goal, but would add the following to the next December Hunt: More
water; Comfortable waterproof snake boots (instead of waders); and a lightweight 10 X 10
tarp. THIS PHOTO HAS SOME DETAILED NOTES.
Question by Gothic Martha™: What kind of camping gear, equipment &
essentials do I need?
I am taking my family camping in a few weeks. What kind of camping equipment do I
need?
I have a small list of what I have so far:

1. Tent
2. Sleeping bags
3. plates and silverware
4. food (but what kind?)
Best answer:
Answer by akninja
Food- Ramen soup or some other easy food like that. Instant rice is easy, or cous-cous (a
sort of grain/pasta thing, it‟s tasty if you get the flavored kind). Also, oatmeal for
breakfast. Burritos are pretty easy to make, too. Anything that is easy to clean is good
(mac and cheese is extraordinarily hard to clean, believe it or not, when you have limited
water to use).
Clothing- non-cotton clothes (no jeans) Nylon is good, as well as polypropylene or
polyester. Go to REI and ask them questions, they should be able to answer most of them.
BRING SPARE CLOTHES.

Question by Tamera C: What kind of camping stuff can you rent on a
military base?
My husband is Army and in Korea and where I live there is an Air Force base. I heard you
can rent camping equipment and other stuff from there. Is this true and if so what all is
there to rent for camping? And are the prices reasonable?
Best answer:
Answer by redleg
Depends on the base…everything from tents and sleeping bags to full blown RVs…

Question by luv2drinkcoffee: Best clothes to wear hiking in Montana?
Best clothes to wear hiking in Montana? Going there next week. I am not a big hiker so I
have no clue what to bring!
Best answer:
Answer by Jack
Most important thing is your boots. If you don‟t have a good pair of walking boots, you‟re
going to have problems. Also remember you have to break them in, so you‟ll have to wear
them for a few hours a day in advance. If you don‟t, your feet will get destroyed. While
we‟re on the feet, walking socks are good, though ski socks (or any really thick socks) will
do. Waterproof socks if you can find any =D
Other than that, you‟ll want to make sure you‟ve got some waterproofs (top and bottom).
Other than that, normal clothes should be good. Trick is to dress in layers, so if you get
too hot or cold you can simply adjust it, rather than having a massive jacket so you‟re
either too hot or too cold =D
Have fun =P

Question by Burt Lake: I will be hiking the Milford track in New Zealand in
early March. What sort of clothing should I bring?
Best answer:
Answer by alig
Definitely plan on some wet weather. I did it a few years ago. Bring the normal overnight
hiking gear – several cotton socks, easy dry clothes. My friend did it in blue jeans and was
miserable. It will also get quite cold at night. There can definitely be snow that early in
the year, especially that far south.

Hiking Camping
Cookware
The right cookware for hiking
Home sweet home

Home sweet home

We bought our campervan from Antony at Chester Street Backpackers in Christchurch
for NZ ,550 (approximately US ,970). It‟s a 1988 Toyota Town Ace "Super Extra" with
about 275,000 km (about 170,000 miles) on it and more than a few dents in the sides and
front, which we think give the van character.
It‟s fairly common practice for travelers to buy old vehicles here and use them to tour the
country, then turn around and sell them to a fellow traveler to do the same. We‟ll be
looking to sell our van right around the start of summer here, which is apparently the best
time to sell a van because of the high demand. Our hope is that we can at least make back
the money we paid for it. We had to pay cash for the van, so we hung around
Christchurch for several days withdrawing the daily maximum from the ATM until we
could get enough cash.

It didn‟t come with any cooking equipment, so we were told we should go to a place called
the Super Shed to find what we needed. It was described as the last stop before the dump,
a place for people to bring household items that they would otherwise throw away. Many
items are also salvaged from the trash and cleaned/polished/fixed up. Based on these
descriptions, I was pretty hesitant to go there to purchase the items we‟d be using to
prepare our food. I pictured a huge warehouse with piles of trash that we‟d have to pick
through. Seth, on the other hand, was thrilled by the prospect of such a place and
convinced me that we should take a look.

He was totally right. Although everything needed a thorough scrubbing, we got some
incredible bargains and walked out with all of our cutlery and an organizer, two kitchen
knives, bowls, plates, cups, mugs, a can opener, a bottle opener, a straw basket, two
camping chairs and a sun umbrella for a grand total of .50. My personal favorite section
was the "10 items for " aisle. None of the outdoor furniture had a price on it, so you had to
just find an employee, show them what you had picked up, and they would eyeball a
price. We still had to purchase some camping cookware that we weren‟t able to find at the
Super Shed, but we left that place with huge smiles on our faces.

Coffee Pot Centerpiece
Question by Sim: How do you clean the inside of a coffee pot?
Its getting Winter time and BF wants his coffee pot chair cleaned up. I got everything
clean except for inside where the water goes. It looks nasty and dirty. I tried wiping it out
and that had no effect on it. I remember BF saying something about vinegar and water
but not sure how to go about that or if it will even work inside the water tank.
Suggestions?
Best answer:
Answer by jmad
Mix 1/4 cup of white vinegar in with an entire pot of water. Run that through then follow
through with 3-4 pots of regular water to get the vinegar taste/smell out. You may have to
run more water through if it still smells like vinegar. Good luck!

Question by andrea_459207: Is it a good idea to rent rock climbing shoes
from sports equipment stores??
Do u think it‟s a good idea to rent a pair of rock hiking climbing rope shoes sat sport
check or mountain co-op?? do they rent out good ones or they rent out old wreck looking
ones?? will the rock climbing shoes feel loose since a lot of people have worn them?? does
normal running shoes work almost the same as rock climbing shoes if I‟m not renting the
rock climbing shoes?? please help me!!
Best answer:
Answer by ?
You should be able to rent a decent pair of shoes from an outfitter. (if you haven‟t been
climbing much, you may not noticed a difference anyway). Typically good outfitters sell
last years shoes and restock their supply at the end of each season. As for fit, just try on a
couple of different sizes, each manufacturer differs slightly in size and fit anyway. No,
normal running shoes do not make for good climbing shoes. There is too much sole on
them which will roll out under your foot and edges of the rock. You‟d be better off
wearing a heavy hiking boot or work boot. I‟d just go with the rentals you‟ll have more
fun.
Good luck climb safe and have fun

hate it. Now I know it is a give, but has anyone found somethig that works? Keep in mind
that this is a climbing shoe…rubber and glue, and $ $ $
Best answer:
Answer by Eric Kol
Take a panty hose stocking, fill it with baking soda in the toe enough to make a tennis ball
sized lump. Tie it off, cut the excess.
When you are done climbing stick the baking soda balls inside your shoes.
Let them air out! If you put sweat damp shoes in your bag and leave them there, they‟ll
get funky.

I have heard of people giving them a shot of Lysol, but I wouldn‟t try it. Last thing I want
is more chemicals to be absorbed into my skin!

WRC hike near Downtown Memphis

Question by Taknev: never go jungle with a smart company?
Two guys were walking through the woods one day when one of them glanced behind
them and noticed a bear following them. He could see that the bear hadn‟t seen them yet,
so he quickly sat on the ground and began taking off his hiking boots. By the time his
friend noticed him sitting there, he had pulled his running shoes out of his backpack and
was putting them on.
His friend said, “What are you doing ?”

His friend pointed up the trail to reveal the bear coming towards them slowly but surely.
He said,” Man you‟re crazy. There‟s no way you can outrun that bear!!”

As he was standing up, his friend said, ” I don‟t have to outrun the bear, I just have to
outrun you!”

Inside Smart hiking Mountain Tower

Question by MRCOOL: Is pet smart good for socializing my 8 month German
Shepherd puppy?
So basically when my dog was a younger puppy I could only find small dogs to play with
him but he met sooooo many of my friends and family, short and tall he met them all. But
a week and half of bad weather kept us inside he started to get scared of tall people but
was still okay with small children and friends that were average height but then another
two weeks later he started to bark in a low tone but not lunging or growling, nothing to
show signs of aggression. He is trained to the point where he‟ll track with his nose, sit, stay
to a certain point, lay down, speak on command and shake paws. Hes very friendly to
friends cautious of big people as was demonstrated at pet smart where he started barking
at everyone. But when a small dog passed by he was waggin his tail and wanted to play.
When I signed up for training the trainer told me he just needed to get used to many
situations and even suggested to join her facebook page called (paws on the shore) where
he would meet many other dogs and situations on a hike. So I‟m wondering does it seem
like a good training plan for my scaredy cat shepherd. If not please tell me of better
training place near york region or Toronto, that you have experienced. Thank You.

Answer by King Les The Lofty
The socialisation period ended when Pup became 13 weeks old, although if well started
before that it can continue through 16 weeks old.
Although everyone calls it “socialisation”, that is actually a bad term, deluding people
such as yourself into thinking it means playing with people & pups. A more accurate term
would be exposure or familiarisation. The purpose is to (once Pup trusts you) expose it –
from a distance PUP considers safe – to every movement, reflection, scent, sight, sound,
texture to be found in its environment. It should be done on a 6ft/2m lead where there
are NO dogs running loose, with Pup allowed to try to “explore in all directions at once”
except when you need to haul it away from dangerous or disgusting things, or from a
scared human. And if Pup wants to sit & think about a new thing, or to hide behind you,
you should let it, patiently waiting still & silent until Pup decides to ignore or investigate
this new thing, whereupon you praise it – and, if it is still close enough, give it a rub or
pat of encouragement.

Hiking camping equipments

  • 1. Camping Equipments. The right camping equipments for hiker 2008 West Pass Hunter Campsite by HOSTMEI R on NOVEMBER 30, 2011 2008 West Pass Hunter Campsite Volunteer Robin Vroegop was drawn for the first time for participation in the three-and- a-half day 2008 Sambar Deer Quota Hunt on SVNWR. She carefully planned her food and gear, attempting to pack lightly and strike a balance between comfort and convenience, and a back-breaking gear portage over the beach. For the most part, she accomplished her goal, but would add the following to the next December Hunt: More water; Comfortable waterproof snake boots (instead of waders); and a lightweight 10 X 10 tarp. THIS PHOTO HAS SOME DETAILED NOTES. Question by Gothic Martha™: What kind of camping gear, equipment & essentials do I need? I am taking my family camping in a few weeks. What kind of camping equipment do I need? I have a small list of what I have so far: 1. Tent 2. Sleeping bags 3. plates and silverware 4. food (but what kind?) Best answer: Answer by akninja Food- Ramen soup or some other easy food like that. Instant rice is easy, or cous-cous (a sort of grain/pasta thing, it‟s tasty if you get the flavored kind). Also, oatmeal for breakfast. Burritos are pretty easy to make, too. Anything that is easy to clean is good (mac and cheese is extraordinarily hard to clean, believe it or not, when you have limited water to use). Clothing- non-cotton clothes (no jeans) Nylon is good, as well as polypropylene or polyester. Go to REI and ask them questions, they should be able to answer most of them. BRING SPARE CLOTHES.

Question by Tamera C: What kind of camping stuff can you rent on a military base? My husband is Army and in Korea and where I live there is an Air Force base. I heard you can rent camping equipment and other stuff from there. Is this true and if so what all is there to rent for camping? And are the prices reasonable? Best answer: Answer by redleg Depends on the base…everything from tents and sleeping bags to full blown RVs… What do you think? • 4. Hiking clothing The right clothing for hiker Clothing stop by HOSTMEI R on NOVEMBER 30, 2011 Clothing stop It warmed up quickly on the trail as we headed up and up and up. Question by luv2drinkcoffee: Best clothes to wear hiking in Montana? Best clothes to wear hiking in Montana? Going there next week. I am not a big hiker so I have no clue what to bring! Best answer: Answer by Jack Most important thing is your boots. If you don‟t have a good pair of walking boots, you‟re going to have problems. Also remember you have to break them in, so you‟ll have to wear them for a few hours a day in advance. If you don‟t, your feet will get destroyed. While we‟re on the feet, walking socks are good, though ski socks (or any really thick socks) will do. Waterproof socks if you can find any =D Other than that, you‟ll want to make sure you‟ve got some waterproofs (top and bottom). Other than that, normal clothes should be good. Trick is to dress in layers, so if you get too hot or cold you can simply adjust it, rather than having a massive jacket so you‟re either too hot or too cold =D Have fun =P Know better? • 9. The right cookware for hiking Home sweet home by HOSTMEI R on NOVEMBER 26, 2011[ EDI T] Home sweet home We bought our campervan from Antony at Chester Street Backpackers in Christchurch for NZ ,550 (approximately US ,970). It‟s a 1988 Toyota Town Ace "Super Extra" with about 275,000 km (about 170,000 miles) on it and more than a few dents in the sides and front, which we think give the van character. It‟s fairly common practice for travelers to buy old vehicles here and use them to tour the country, then turn around and sell them to a fellow traveler to do the same. We‟ll be looking to sell our van right around the start of summer here, which is apparently the best time to sell a van because of the high demand. Our hope is that we can at least make back the money we paid for it. We had to pay cash for the van, so we hung around Christchurch for several days withdrawing the daily maximum from the ATM until we could get enough cash. It didn‟t come with any cooking equipment, so we were told we should go to a place called the Super Shed to find what we needed. It was described as the last stop before the dump, a place for people to bring household items that they would otherwise throw away. Many items are also salvaged from the trash and cleaned/polished/fixed up. Based on these descriptions, I was pretty hesitant to go there to purchase the items we‟d be using to prepare our food. I pictured a huge warehouse with piles of trash that we‟d have to pick through. Seth, on the other hand, was thrilled by the prospect of such a place and convinced me that we should take a look. He was totally right. Although everything needed a thorough scrubbing, we got some incredible bargains and walked out with all of our cutlery and an organizer, two kitchen knives, bowls, plates, cups, mugs, a can opener, a bottle opener, a straw basket, two camping chairs and a sun umbrella for a grand total of .50. My personal favorite section was the "10 items for " aisle. None of the outdoor furniture had a price on it, so you had to just find an employee, show them what you had picked up, and they would eyeball a price. We still had to purchase some camping cookware that we weren‟t able to find at the Super Shed, but we left that place with huge smiles on our faces.

  • 16. The Digital Photography Book The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2 Question by andrea_459207: Is it a good idea to rent rock climbing shoes from sports equipment stores?? Do u think it‟s a good idea to rent a pair of rock hiking climbing rope shoes sat sport check or mountain co-op?? do they rent out good ones or they rent out old wreck looking ones?? will the rock climbing shoes feel loose since a lot of people have worn them?? does normal running shoes work almost the same as rock climbing shoes if I‟m not renting the rock climbing shoes?? please help me!! Best answer: Answer by ? You should be able to rent a decent pair of shoes from an outfitter. (if you haven‟t been climbing much, you may not noticed a difference anyway). Typically good outfitters sell last years shoes and restock their supply at the end of each season. As for fit, just try on a couple of different sizes, each manufacturer differs slightly in size and fit anyway. No, normal running shoes do not make for good climbing shoes. There is too much sole on them which will roll out under your foot and edges of the rock. You‟d be better off wearing a heavy hiking boot or work boot. I‟d just go with the rentals you‟ll have more fun. Good luck climb safe and have fun What do you think? • 17. Answer by Eric Kol Take a panty hose stocking, fill it with baking soda in the toe enough to make a tennis ball sized lump. Tie it off, cut the excess. When you are done climbing stick the baking soda balls inside your shoes. Let them air out! If you put sweat damp shoes in your bag and leave them there, they‟ll get funky. I have heard of people giving them a shot of Lysol, but I wouldn‟t try it. Last thing I want is more chemicals to be absorbed into my skin! He could see that the bear hadn‟t seen them yet, so he quickly sat on the ground and began taking off his hiking boots. By the time his friend noticed him sitting there, he had pulled his running shoes out of his backpack and was putting them on. His friend said, “What are you doing ?” His friend pointed up the trail to reveal the bear coming towards them slowly but surely. He said,” Man you‟re crazy. There‟s no way you can outrun that bear!!” As he was standing up, his friend said, ” I don‟t have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you!” Best answer: Answer by as 1 this was a scene from the film „without a paddle‟ and it wasnt funny then! So basically when my dog was a younger puppy I could only find small dogs to play with him but he met sooooo many of my friends and family, short and tall he met them all. But a week and half of bad weather kept us inside he started to get scared of tall people but was still okay with small children and friends that were average height but then another two weeks later he started to bark in a low tone but not lunging or growling, nothing to show signs of aggression. He is trained to the point where he‟ll track with his nose, sit, stay to a certain point, lay down, speak on command and shake paws. Hes very friendly to friends cautious of big people as was demonstrated at pet smart where he started barking at everyone. But when a small dog passed by he was waggin his tail and wanted to play. When I signed up for training the trainer told me he just needed to get used to many situations and even suggested to join her facebook page called (paws on the shore) where he would meet many other dogs and situations on a hike. So I‟m wondering does it seem like a good training plan for my scaredy cat shepherd. If not please tell me of better training place near york region or Toronto, that you have experienced. Thank You. Best answer: Answer by King Les The Lofty The socialisation period ended when Pup became 13 weeks old, although if well started before that it can continue through 16 weeks old. Although everyone calls it “socialisation”, that is actually a bad term, deluding people such as yourself into thinking it means playing with people & pups. A more accurate term would be exposure or familiarisation. The purpose is to (once Pup trusts you) expose it – from a distance PUP considers safe – to every movement, reflection, scent, sight, sound, texture to be found in its environment. It should be done on a 6ft/2m lead where there are NO dogs running loose, with Pup allowed to try to “explore in all directions at once” except when you need to haul it away from dangerous or disgusting things, or from a scared human. And if Pup wants to sit & think about a new thing, or to hide behind you, you should let it, patiently waiting still & silent until Pup decides to ignore or investigate
