Steps to Success - Starting Your own Tutoring Business
Starting a successful business does not need to be complicated or require a large investment. By
sticking to the basics, following some important steps and being adaptable you will be well on your
way to building a successful tutoring business. Follow these steps for starting your own tutoring
business.
1. Evaluate the Market
The first step is to evaluate the market and make some important initial decisions about what
services to offer. After determining whether there is sufficient need for tutoring in the area, the
individual needs to decide the geographical region in which he or she will market tutoring services.
An important consideration is whether the tutoring will be done at the tutor's home or at the
children's homes. Depending on the size of the city and the number of tutors already in the area, an
aspiring tutor should concentrate marketing efforts within a 20 to 30 minute driving radius of the
business location. The individual will also need to decide subjects and grade levels he or she can
tutor. Of course, the greatest tutoring need is generally in high school subjects and in advanced
classes.
2. Determine Your Prices
Aspiring tutoring business owners will have to decide how much to charge for these services. Most
tutors charge by the hour. However, charges can vary greatly depending on the subject matter, the
age range and the area in which the business is located. The best way to determine a starting hourly
charge is to find out how much other tutors in the area charge. It's important that your prices are
competitive based on the value that you offer. Many new tutoring business owners feel the need to
have the lowest prices in their area; however, this can limit your opportunities for growth since
profits for reinvesting will be limited. A good starting point is to charge at or slightly higher than the
average price in your area. And remember, if you offer outstanding tutoring services customers will
be willing to pay higher prices.
3. Find Clients
One of the most important activities in operating a tutoring business is finding clients. New tutors
often focus on everything else and neglect the difficult part of finding students. Even if you have
very little money to spend on advertising there are numerous low-cost methods that can be highly
successful.
Word-of-mouth advertising can be one of the most powerful ways to advertise because parents are
most likely to take the suggestions of their friends and relatives. Another option is to set up business
pages on one or more social media sites. If your budget is large enough, a business website is a
great option because it will allow parents to find out more about the tutoring service and about
tutoring charges. Other options include advertising in local newspapers, online, on community
bulletin boards and at local businesses.
A good rule of thumb is to think about where your clients spend a lot of time. You will most likely be
tutoring elementary, high school or college students so think about where they and their families
spend a lot of time and focus your marketing on those places.
4. Scheduling Organization
Whether you are an individual tutor or you run a business with several tutors, you will need to set up
a detailed system of record keeping, including student records, billing invoices and schedules. This
is often neglected, but it is vital that this type of business be run in a highly organized manner
because detailed record keeping will save a great deal of time. Providing clients and students with
online access to their schedules is also very useful and can drastically reduce the amount of time you
spend on the phone answering questions about schedules. Orderly records, lists of business
expenses and billing invoices will be necessary when tax preparation season hits.
5. Teaching Hiring Teachers
After setting up the marketing and administrative aspects of the business, the fifth step is the actual
teaching. Most first time tutors do all of the teaching on their own, but as your business grows, you
will likely find the need to hire additional tutors. It is best to hire tutors who are knowledgeable in
areas in which you aren't knowledgeable -- this allows you to expand the reach of the business
beyond your own abilities. For example, you may specialize in English tutoring and want to hire
tutors who can teach foreign languages or advanced mathematics or science classes. By finding
highly-knowledgeable tutors in different subjects you can provide high quality services to your
clients.
Make Your Mark
A tutor can make a huge impact on the children that he or she teaches because a tutor is often a
large part of a child's success in school. Starting one's own tutoring business can be a thrilling
lesson in marketing and administration techniques. With patience and dedication, anyone with
experience in education can make this business successful.
