A talk I gave @ Mosman Library July 29 2010. It's a brief overview of Flickr, its key features, the Commons and uses for the study and sharing of local and family history.
8. Flickr| Engaging Community The social media phenomenon is fed by human needs for self-expression, feedback, generosity and community. Flickr created this phenomenon by developing the ultimate photo-sharing platform. Participants from around the world share, tag and comment on their images. People can choose to share their joy, their sorrow and their perspective.
9. Flickr| Expressing Yourself It’s a phenomenon that’s hard to explain. Flickr has come to mean something to its members – excitement, community and freedom. It’s much more than a repository of beautiful photos. Flickr provides an outlet for self expression. It connects people, acting as witness to their experiences. It literally captures daily life across the globe.
12. Flickr| Tell a Story with your photos Tell a story with photos and allow people to comment Add notes to explain or comment right on the photos Make photos “favourite” Add people to your photos so they know you’ve posted Add tags to categorise your photos and help other people find them
16. Flickr| Explore. Watch the World Places – explore the world through geo tags, from Alaska to Zanzibar! Current events – from the White house photostream, Nasa Flight Centre and breaking news Galleries – unleash your inner curator, create you own gallery from images you find interesting, fascinating or mind blowing! The Commons – Explore a snapshot in time with The Commons on Flickr. Hidden treasures of some of the worlds greatest photography archives.

33. Flickr| Public Library |Image Collection |Flickr Public Library Macro Commons? To increase access to publicly-held photography collections, and To provide a way for the general public to contribute information and knowledge. (Then watch what happens when they do!) Open Questions: Is there scope for Mosman Library – Local Studies to utiliseFlickr further? Are there volunteers available to help get the library online? Could Mosman set a precedent for opening up local studies to a wider audience? How many other libraries have similar collections?
35. Flickr| The Williams Family | A brief history The family genealogy experts have traced us back to the 17th Century I’ve ancestors who fought in the Boer Wars and Gallipoli I’ve ancestors who came to Australia in the 1850’s for the gold rush Some came out as Ten Pound Poms (and then went back) Mostly my family has mostly stayed in South Wales We’ve a heap of photos going back to the 19th Century which we’re going to put online on Flickr
37. Flickr| The Williams Commons Inspired by this talk I’ve been working with my father to start curating our family photos My fathers sense of humour shines through on the descriptions and comments. Future generations of the Williams clan will be able to enjoy the history passed down
