Hook/Attention Grabber…Where is your money? Story about how music listening sites such as Pandora and Spotify are not paying some artists to stream their music. http://www.flickr.com/photos/thedarkthing/5363580731/sizes/l/in/photostream/
It seems that in some instances, the courts are siding with these companies. According to scribd.com, in the case of Pandora v ASCAP rights withdrawal ruling, where the judge ruled in favor of Pandora, forcing ASCAP to allow Pandora to license it’s entire works for digital use. This takes the decision to allow your music to be played digitally away from you as a member of ASCAP.Photo Credit: bionicteaching via Compfight cc
The Big Idea…. Musicians need to be compensated for digital use of their music, and Music Listening sites need be held accountable.Photo Credit: bradleygee via Compfight cc
What Is In It For The Audience…? Pandora claims to have 70 million users- Stephanie Clifford of INC magazine(, company profile). According to press.spotifiy.comSpotify claims 25 million, yet Spotify claims to have paid rights holders 500 million $ since launching, also claiming they add 20,000 songs a day. with a catalog of 20 million songs already. that is about 25 dollars per song.Photo Credit: KashirinNickolai via Compfight cc
Why Should You Listen To Me…? are these sites to big to stop? I have been a spotify user in the past, I am a musician in the Midwest, it is hard enough to get good paying gigs and sell albums with out people being able to stream music free online. My own personal music can be found on Spotify. I have never been contacted to ask permission, or to be paid. I found Everything I have Ever Recorded on Spotify, and some live shows that I didn’t even know were recorded. Call To Action…Something needs to be done about this, I don’t even know where to start, to either A, be compensated, or B get my music off this site. Could the first place to start be not using these sites at all?Photo Credit: dearbarbie via Compfight cc
If enough people quit using the sites our voice would be heard. In this case we need #’s. the unpaid artist voice is not loud enough. another option is for these sites to force you to pay for their services, I am a music lover, but music still needs to be paid for, press.spotify.com says that Spotify has made over 800 million in revenue in the U.S. since 2011, says it has paid rights holders 500 million, but says it hasn’t turned a profit.??? is my math wrong?? Option 3 is to lobby politically and try to find a loophole in the law to support what you already know is right.
What if we all quit listening for free? with no client base these sites may very well wither up and fade away. This doesn’t fix the problem, it dissolves it sort of, I don’t think this is a viable option because it alone doesn’t help get the artists paid. #’s gathered from INC magazine and press.spotify.com add up to 130 million Americans use Pandora and Spotify
WE need to ban together to help artists get compensated. if there are 130 million potential voices in the room it is easier for them to be heard, if they are all saying the same thing. I realize that to have everyone who uses these sites on my side is a bit of a stretch, maybe it just needs to be presented in a way that makes it more comfortable. Hypothetically, if Pandora and Spotify stopped offering their service for free and you had to pay a small monthly fee (much like NetFlix) the majority of us would have no problem paying for the service. I used the example Netflix earlier, according to engadget.com Netflix has topped 40 million subscribers. Imagine the money generated by 130 million. We can’t shut these sites down, they are too big and too popular, We can pay for what we should be paying for in the first place. Spotify has an option to have commercial free and no limit streaming for a small monthly fee. Currently only about 5% of their users pay.Photo Credit: sean_oliver via Compfight cc
Think back to how you used to listen to your music. The key word is Your. Your album collection, your CD collection. This is all music you purchased. I personally feel a bit closer to the music when I purchase it with my hard earned money.Photo Credit: CarstenSchertzer via Compfight cc
We can’t shut these sites down, they are too big and too popular, we can use our powers of word of mouth to “get the word our” I tell you, you tell everyone else. It goes back to how to have our voice heard. Hard work is always rewarded, even with only satisfaction. You don’t know what you are capable of until you try. How this money gets to the right sources is another problem , but it is not the first thing that needs to be addressed.Photo Credit: B Rosen via Compfight cc
while 130 million people boycotting these sites will not be beneficial for anyone, 130 million paying subscribers helps everyone, we still get the music we want to hear, the companies that run the sites become fiscally successful, and their seemingly would be enough money to pay the artists. Call To Action…. there are 130 million potential voices, together we can fix the problem so that everyone eventually wins. How much do you care? as a musician this directly effects you.Photo Credit: B Rosen via Compfight cc
Musicians need to be paid for the digital use of their music. My music is on these sites. I have never seen a dime or been asked permission from anyone.
