Before I went to bed on Sunday night, I checked my iPod to make sure that I would be waking up at six to some
music and not a podcast. I quite like podcasts, but I do find it easier to just lie there and listen rather than get
out of bed. A good, lively song gives me some of the volume and kick I need to get out of bed.
The song I got on shuffle was The Beatles’ song Eight Days a Week. This seemed like a good choice. Monday
morning, it did the job and off I went. It also stuck in my head which is how my students ended up with the
song title as their writing topic on Monday.
I briefly wondered if I only liked this idea because I like the song. My minor concern was misplaced, as most
students wrote really interesting pieces about this. Most of then wrote of how they would love an extra day of
rest. Many of them explained why this would bring families together and make people happier. A couple of
them even had me thinking, albeit briefly, that this extra day sounded like a good idea.
So, it seems there might be shreds of wisdom in old pop songs and teen writing after all.
