Magazine advert analysis
1.
2. The background of this magazine
advert has green and pink flowers
giving a sense of a femininity touch.
This creates a binary opposition with
the grotesque bare lungs on her chest,
this will go with her genre type of
alternative and indie, and also goes
with her target audience of females .
The artist is dressed in old fashioned see
through type clothing which fits in with
a vintage style like her genre. The top
has strings on it which a lot like harp
strings, again fitting in with her type of
music. Underneath her top we can see a
pair of grotesque lungs which reflects
what she could be feeling like on the
inside and which she portrays through
her music, or it could be to rebel against
the controversial look of females to look
beautiful for the male gaze, this links in
with Laura Mulvey’s theory.
The name of the artist is right
across the top of the advert to
catch peoples attention and to
promote the artist. Her name is
written in a feminine font which
fits in with the background of the
image.
All information about the album
such as releases and different
formats it is realised on is written
underneath the main focus of the
advert, however is a crucial part of
the advert so people have the
correct information of her album.
The main image of the artist of
different to what we are used to
seeing, for example she isn't
using a direct mode of address
toward the audience which
shows she is different from
others.
3. The image is in bold colours of black and
white, which relates strongly with the
caption of ‘JANET JACKSON IS BACK’ it
makes it stand out and is right in your face
relating with that she is back.
The main image is of the artist and
she is giving the audience a direct
mode of address which is striking to
people and catches their eye, which is
what you want an advert to do. With
dark makeup to make her eyes more
striking, which also catches the eyes
of the audience.
At the bottom, it gives us all the
relevant information we need about
the advert, for example when the
album is released, information about
herself and what it includes. It also
includes things such as the record
company logo and her website for
promotional reasons
The artist is wearing very little
clothing which gives makes
her look sexual, from her hair
we can also tell that it is wet
to make the image look even
more sexier, this capture the
attention of many, especially
the male audience. However
what is written on her arms
‘Discipline’ contradicts this
photo as she is covering her
self.
The black leather type gloves
also link in with her sexual
look as usually people wear
skin tight suits of that
material which makes them
look sexy. The white writing
in paint also makes her name
stand out more to the
audience.
4. The artist is situated on the left
hand side of the page, this is
different to having the artist in the
centre like usual. This links in well
with what she as an artist is like
and the type of genre of her music
of being ‘indie’ and ‘different’.
The dark colours also used on the
artist, such as her clothing, hair
and makeup it makes her blend
into the background giving us a
dark feel to her, and it makes her
pale skin stand out, again fitting in
with her genre of music of being
‘different;.
The artist is giving us a direct
mode of address with a
miserable, angry like
expression catching our
attention and fitting in with
her music.
The artists name and album
name is situated at the top of
the page in bold big writing to
stand out to the audience and is
promoting her name and album
straight away. The writing is in
white which contrast with the
dark background and the artist.
This could suggest that she's
different.
The background of the advert
is black, which is used mainly
for alternative artists, which
gives us a sense that they are
different and don’t fit to
expectations of people.
The photo of the album
cover shows us that it
has already been
realised and also creates
synergy with the advert
and the digipackThe information on the advert is
promotional methods, with it stating
that it’s the number one album this
makes people want to buy it therefore
being a successful promotional
method.
