Corruption is a problem in many sports. In cricket, several prominent players have been banned for life for match fixing, including former South Africa captain Hansie Cronje in 2000, former India captain Muhammad Azharuddin in 2000, and former Pakistan captain Salim Malik in 2000. In football, scandals have involved Turkish side Fenerbache being relegated in 2011 for match fixing, and Italian teams being penalized in 2006 for influencing referee decisions. Anti-corruption efforts face challenges, as some claim international governing bodies like FIFA have been reluctant to fully investigate all allegations.
