3. Does Your Business Need A
Modern Marketing Makeover?
A client asked for help recently as she was
concerned about her lack of success online
She felt totally overwhelmed with all the
sharing, tweeting and blogging and despite
putting more and more effort into promoting her
business, she wasn’t getting the results she
wanted
4. Working Smart, Not Hard
Like many successful entrepreneurs
she had all the pieces of the modern
marketing puzzle but as her
business had grown she’d got busy
with her core business and had
taken her eye off the ball
With a number of important events and a product
launch coming up she needed help, fast!
5. Otherwise it’s like firing arrows in the dark,
hoping to hit the target
And very difficult to achieve
the results you deserve
If you’re ready to give your business a modern
makeover, here is a simple version of the process
I used to get my client back on track again
6. What online “real estate” do you have?
This might sound terribly American but think of your
online presence as the sum total of all the parts
If you don’t have consistency with your brand across
all aspects of your online presence it can confuse
your audience and make you appear unprofessional
Confusion = no action!
7. Don’t forget that it’s common for people to google
you after they’ve met you, and particularly if
they’re considering working with you
So make sure you control what they find!
Top Tip: Google your own name and business
name and see what comes up. Are you happy
with what you see? If not, it’s time to plan some
positive changes
8. Modern Marketing Action Plan
Step #1: Make a list of all your online “real
estate” including:
Your website(s)
Blog
Social media platforms & groups
Email list
Email auto responder series
Your sales pages
Your products, events & training
9. Making The Right Impression
Step #2: Take an objective look at your image, your copy
and your message across all the media in Step 1
How do you come across? (overall impression)
Does your branding and message reflect your mission
and purpose?
Are you speaking to your core market? (what are you saying?)
Are you clearly articulating the value you offer and how
you help people?
Is your message consistent?
What action(s) are you asking people to take?
Do you have one clear objective with your online
marketing? (build your list, fill seats for an event, sell products, build
trustt, engage on social media)
10. You only have 3 seconds to catch
someone’s attention and communicate
your value
Make sure you’re making the right
impression to capture those visitors in
those few short moments
11. Are you presenting a consistent brand
to the world?
Branding means the look, feel and image you
present to the world
The best way I’ve heard this described is it’s how
you want someone to feel when they see your
business
Strong market brands conjure up feelings of fun
(Virgin), taste and refreshment (Coke) and cutting
edge and funky (Apple)
12. One of the biggest mistakes small
businesses make is to have inconsistent
branding
If your blog doesn’t seamlessly blend with
your face book page and your Twitter
profile, it’s time to take things up a notch
and get a professional look and feel for
your business
13. Step #3 Update your social media “wardrobe”
If you don’t have a big budget go to Fiverr.com and get a logo
and graphics designed for your website and social media
profiles
Check out the Instagram on the FB page for the
measurements
You’ll pay $5 per graphic designed so you can rebrand your
entire online image for less than $50
It doesn’t have to be an award-winning design but it does
have to be professional and relevant
Remember, you can change your graphics whenever you
want, and when you’re making the big bucks you can spend
a fortune hiring a fancy designer to overhaul your branding
14. Before ordering your branding and social media
graphics, be clear on what your images should
say about your business (fun, authority, dynamic)
and which colour themes you’re going with
Top Tip: Keep a swipe file of logos and
images you like and send a sample or two
to the designer to show them the type of
style, look and feel you’re aiming for
15. What do you want your visitors to do?
On looking at my client’s website, she had no less
than 5 calls to action on her home page
It wasn’t clear whether I should join her mailing
list, sign up for a workshop, buy a book, engage with
her on Facebook or request coaching!
Too many options means indecision, and indecision
equals zero response, as visitors will bounce around
your site and leave without taking any action
16. ACTION: Make it clear what you want your
visitors to do and make it easy for them to take
the necessary action
Plan for Success: What are
your priorities?
Think about your marketing priorities for
the next 6-8 months
Rather than constantly promoting
everything (which is exhausting), focus on
one key promotion per week, or month
17. How To Get Organised: Create A Content Calendar
Step #4: Thinking 4-8 weeks ahead….
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Write a list of the key projects to promote and
the messages you want to share
Book or product launches
Events
Speaking engagements
Workshops and webinars
Joint venture promotions
Special promotions, such as “Top Tips” series to
launch a new email course
7. Free gifts or giveaways
8. Articles, blog posts or guest posts you’ve written
9. Awards you’ve won
10. Mentions in the press
And don’t forget special occasions such as Valentine’s
Day, International Women’s Day, Public Holidays and
other dates relevant to your market
18. Step #5: Make a list of all the ways you
communicate with your audience:
Blog posts
Emails
Facebook posts and groups
Twitter tweets
LinkedIn updates and groups
G+ communities and updates
Third party blogs and forums
YouTube videos
19. Step #6: Schedule your messages accordingly
This isn’t designed to kill spontaneity but you’ll know in
advance what your main priorities are and you can
schedule your communications in advance
This really puts you in the driving seat and ensures
you get the results and success you deserve
Then you can spend the time you’re online responding
to comments, engaging with your clients and keeping
those all-important conversations going
