     Chapter 5
Cell Cycle

 Life cycle of a cell is called the cell cycle


 Begins when the cell is formed and ends when the
 cell divides and forms new cells

 Before a cell divides, it must make a copy of its
 DNA

 The DNA of a cell is organized into chromosomes
Making More Prokaryotic Cells

 Prokaryotic cells are not very complex


 Cell division is fairly simple because of this


 Binary fission is the simple cell division of
 prokaryotes in which one cell splits into two

 Each of the resulting cells contains one copy of the
 DNA
Eukaryotic Cells and their DNA

 Eukaryotes are usually larger and more complex


 Because of this they have a lot more DNA


 Chromosomes of a eukaryote contain DNA and
 proteins

 The number of chromosomes in eukaryotes differs
 from organism to organism and has nothing to do
 with how complex the organism is
Eukaryotic Cells and their DNA

 Fruit flies have 8 chromosomes


 Potatoes have 48 chromosomes


 Humans have 46


 The 46 are actually made up of 23 pairs of similar
 chromosomes known as homologous
 chromosomes
Math Break

   It takes Cell A 6 hours to complete its cell cycle and
    produce 2 cells.
   The cell cycle of Cell B takes 8 hours.


   How many more cells would be formed from Cell A
   than from Cell B in 24 hours?
                                          16
Cell A: 24 hrs/6 hrs per cycle = 4 cycles - 8
                                            8 more cells
           2x2x2x2= 16
                                          formed by Cell A
Cell B: 24 hrs/8 hrs per cycle= 3 cycles compared to Cell B
         2x2x2= 8
