Dr Mark Elliott's (Collabforge) keynote to the City Planning, Civic Participation the Internet at Princeton University - 1 May 2009. This presentation details how Collabforge worked with City of Melbourne to map the existing city planing process to develop a re-engineered process that leveraged collaboration and utilised cutting edge 'Web 2.0' solutions. Most notably, an open source wiki-based collaboration environment was developed in order to enable collaboration amongst the many City officers and stakeholders, as well as members of the general public during the public consultation period. The Future Melbourne project (www.futuremelbourne.com.au) recently won the Planning Institute of Australia (Victoria Division) Awards for Excellence, Local Government.

During the Balkans War of 1992-95 which primarily involved Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia following the break-up of Yugoslovia, I was, thanks to former Detroit Bureau Chief Frank Washington, Chief of Correspondents Ann McDaniel and Editor Maynard Parker, a special correspondent for Newsweek, Newsweek Japan and Newsweek International covering the industrial (automotive, aerospace), financial, medical and technological sectors along with investigative duties. The latter including the Oklahoma City bombing cover story element "Three Strange Friends" within which I interterviewed James Nichols on his farm in Decker, Michigan; "One Family's Nightmare", the murder of the Freeman family in Pennsylvania by their neo-Nazi sons; the GM board revolt analysis "Another Pink Slip?" that predicted to the day when former Chairman Bob Stempel would step down; a measured defense of Edsel Ford II in "A Young Ford at The Wheel" and "The Shame of the City", covering the death of Deletha Word after jumping off the Belle Isle bridge in Detroit to escape her attackers. "Just as Safe at Any Speed" written with the Washington Bureau's Evan Thomas, helped to reverse the extremely negative reporting surrounding GM's C/K pickup truck controversy. Additionally, I contributed to an extensive analysis of the nation's blood supply "In Search of Safer Blood" (Geoffrey Cowley, Sharon Begley, et al,) and a 6 month investigation, in collaboration with Melinda Beck, leading to a cover story on the safety of America's airlines "How Safe is This Flight?" I also had the privilege of being the only reporter to conduct an extensive interview with Rodney King at the height of the LA Riots of 1992 (my brother Doug and I drove out during curfew) while sitting on the hood of King's "magical" Hyundai Excel that managed to outrun, police claimed, a CHP 5.0L Mustang.

Bloomfield Hills, MI, UPDATE September 28,2010 - According to Congressional sources, Boeing C-17 Funding is not included in the first markup of the 2011 Defense Authorization Bill which failed to make it to the floor subsequent to partisan objections to its content. At this juncture, it will in all likelihood not come up for final approval until January 3, 2011. It is our understanding that aerospace competitors to Boeing - Lockheed-Martin and Airbus/EAD - in conjunction with several policy makers (who, by their inexplicable and irresponsible efforts to kill the operationally superior and provably cost effective C-17 Globemaster III, have ostensibly been compromised) have been, and continue to be, behind the full range of activities within government, industry and media to terminate C-17 production. It’s not difficult to understand why: With C-17 out of the way, Lockheed-Martin will reap up to USD15 billion in C-5 - an arguably mission obsolete airlifter with a long history of reliability problems that continue to this day - modernization revenues, and up to 5 billion in C-130J orders both from the US AirForce and NATO/de facto NATO allies; Airbus/EADS will have an open door to attempt the placement of 200 overweight (12 tons at moment giving it essentially the same approx. 25 ton load capacity of C-130J) overcost (current acquisition costs may exceed that of a new C-17, prompting South Africa to withdraw its order) yet-to-be-operational A-400M - an order valued at up to 40 billion based on current projected acquisition costs, and renewed confidence and vigor to pursue 35-40 billion (100 billion over life of program) US AirForce KC-X aerial tanker replacement program. The strategy in place is structured not only to wrest airlifter and tanker program participation from Boeing, but to set the stage for the company’s rapid elimination from existence. Thus, leaving the military and commercial aircraft sector to Lockheed-Martin and Airbu/EADS and an increasingly unstable geo-political landscape (within which the duality of asymmetric/conventional war scenarios is a constant) while simultaneously bereft of Boeing profound technological and production capacity should its enemies succeed. This must be called what it inarguably is: An issue of national security demanding response designed to ensure continuance of Boeing, a core element of the US defense industrial base. Myron D. Stokes Managing Member Global HeavyLift Holdings Bloomfield Hills, MI, May 26, 2010 (PressReleasePoint) -- Global HeavyLift Holdings, LLC, a Defense Logistics Agency (DLA www.ccr.gov) entity based in Michigan, believes it is appropriate to address, yet again, the continuing attacks, misstatements and outright analytical/factual errors carried by multiple media outlets globally against Boeing C-17. These are largely based on comments by Secretary of Defense Dr. Robert Gates, elements of the USAF, and others demanding an end to its production. The drumbeat of anti-C-17 commentary in US, European, Indian, Pakistani and other global news mediums; a strike at Boeing Long Beach by union workers and the observably large leap in logic suggesting the Globemaster III will be terminated as a result, appear to be part of a well-coordinated effort -- again -- to render as self-fulfilling prophecy SECDEF Dr. Robert Gates' unfounded insistence on ending production of the world's most successful strategic/tactical airlifter.

Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits. To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups. Technology For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did. While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis. Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad. Age and Gender When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same. Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers. Race Affects Attitudes As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

From their humble beginnings in 1984, TED has grown into the world’s most powerful amplifier for speakers and thought-leaders to share their ideas. They have over 2,400 filmed talks (not including the 30,000+ TEDx videos) freely available online, and have hosted over 17,500 events around the world. With over one billion views in a year, it’s no wonder that so many speakers are looking to TED for ideas on how to share their message more effectively. The article “5 Public-Speaking Tips TED Gives Its Speakers”, by Carmine Gallo for Forbes, gives speakers five practical ways to connect with their audience, and effectively share their ideas on stage. Whether you are gearing up to get on a TED stage yourself, or just want to master the skills that so many of their speakers possess, these tips and quotes from Chris Anderson, the TED Talks Curator, will encourage you to make the most impactful impression on your audience.
