(Information & Library Network), Ahmedabad
 An autonomous Inter-University Centre of the University
Grants Commission (UGC)
 It is a major National Programme initiated by the UGC in
1991 with its Head Quarters at Gujarat University
Campus, Ahmedabad. Initially started as a project under
the IUCAA in 1988;
 It became an independent Inter-University Centre in 1996

BACKGROUND OF INFLIBNET
(INFORMATION & LIBRARY NETWORK)
 It is basically a cooperative endeavours in resource
development, sharing and its utilization at national level;
 Till date, 142 university libraries have been financed to
establish the necessary infrastructure for computerisation
of their libraries and link them through network; and
 09 Central Universities and 02 State Universities are
given Financial Assistance for Modernisation of Libraries
and Creation of Bibliographic Databases

MAJOR OBJECTIVES OF INFLIBNET
 To promote and establish communication facilities to
improve capability in Information Transfer and Access
that provide support to scholarship , learning research
and academic pursuits through cooperation and
involvement of Agencies;
 To establish Information and Library Network –a
computer communication network for linking libraries
and information centres in universities, deemed to be
universities, colleges , UGC-Information centres,
Institutions of national importance, R& D institutions
etc. avoiding duplication of efforts in acquiring
resources.

Scholarly Content: 6000 (12 B ) Colleges funded by the UGC will
have access to electronic resources subscribed by the UGC-
INFONET Digital Library Consortium for its members
institutions; and
 Hosting of ETD : Electronic Theses and Dissertations

LIBRARIES
 INFLIBNET has been able to create an IT conscious
environment in University Libraries ;
 142 Universities were provided grants for
developing ICT Infrastructure for Automation and
Networking (Assam University is one of them ); and
 Gujarat University Automation Project

UGC –INFONET CONNECTIVITY
PROGRAMME
 158 Universities are equipped with State –of
–Art Campus Wide Network;
 Internet Bandwidth ranging from 256 Kbps
to 4 Mbps to be given depending upon
geographical locations of the universities;
and
 Internet Bandwidth is being upgraded to 4/
10 Mbps for all universities .

 More than 1950 Institutions have procured and
installed for Library Automation;
 Available in limited (30,000/-) and Full Version
(Rs.60,000/-);
 MARC 21/ ISO 2709 format for Data Exchange ;
 RFID Compliant , Copy Cataloguing and Web OPAC
Facility;
 5-Days In-House Training and Regional Training
Programme for imparting training on SOUL Software
 Established Regional Service Centers' and SOUL
Support Cell with dedicated Helpline for
Troubleshooting

UGC-INFONET 2.0 : A NETWORK
OF INDIAN UNIVERSITIES
 UGC-INFONET is an ambitious programme of UGC to
interlink all the Universities in the country with state-of-art
technology .
 The Network is being switched over to BSNL backbone w. e. f
1st April 2010 and renamed as UGC Infonet 2.0.
 ON the new scheme 10 Mbps(1:1) Leased line is being
established in 180 plus universities preferably by using Fiber
to provide Internet Services.
 INFLIBNET is responsible for executing and monitoring the
entire project. The UGC-INFONET mainly provides Internet
bandwidth, a pre-requisite for delivery of scholarly content
subscribed through the UGC-INFONET Digital Library
Consortium. The scheme has now been extended to 200
Universities and 6 Inter-University Centres of the UGC.

CONCLUSION
 Library Networking by various agencies have been
momentum in the country. Amongst all other Library
Networks , INFLIBNET has been playing a significant
role for the modernization of University and College
Libraries of India in general and NE Region of India
in particular;
 Thanks to INFLIBNET for Bridging the Digital Divide ;
 We are located in remote area but we are no longer
remain electronically isolated lagging behind rest of
the country;
 Now we have ample E-Resources at our hand . We
have to optimally utilized the resources for academic
and research output converting our dreams into
reality.
